I had a cdrom on the secondary IDE as master, and it worked perfectly.
Then I added a cd recorder on the secondary IDE, but had to put it as
master. So now the CDR is master and the CDrom is slave.
I then change /dev/cdrom to point to /dev/hdd instead of /dev/hdc (which I
think is now the CDR):
lrwxrwxrwx   1 root   root    3 Jul 17 20:57 /dev/cdrom -> /dev/hdd

But when I launch gtcd for example, I get an error message: the disk can
not be accessed.

Can someone help me ?

Thanks

Thanks Homer Jay, worked like a charm :)

I have a different problem now, if anyone can comment... in Xconfigurator
when I try to select my Card (the lowest end Cirrus card) the program says
that the required file is "not found". It then exits to the command prompt.
For curiosity sake I tried a bunch of them, and all of the ones I tried
booted my to the prompt...

Is this an RPM I have to install?
I did go to the directory where it was looking for the file, and it wasn't
there.

Sheesh, after working with Windows for so long, I never thought I would be
operating on this level of ignorance again :( Thanks all for your help...

Is your runlevel set to 5? Runlevel 3 requires startx after login to start
X windows. Runlevel 5 will boot directly into X windows. You can set the
runlevel in Redhat using linuxconf. Otherwise find the file /etc/inittab.
You will see a line id:3:initdefault. See that the number is 5 or change
it to a 5 then you should boot right into X windows. JH

Hi, I am trying to find the latest version of modversions.h. Does anybody
know where I can find it. I am seeing a lot of questions posted everywhere

Bill,

I installed a network version of Star Office 5.2 in /opt/office52 on RedHat 6.2
on a Pentium PC. When I did as you suggested below to further install S.O.
for an individual user, I got the install screen but nothing specific to a "user",
and when clicking on "Complete" at the end of the process, nothing was
really installed. All this was done while logged in as the user, whereas
the network version was installed as root. Suggestions welcomed!

-Frank

P.S. I did get a file .user52.rdb created in ~ but don't know what to do with it.

I noted the response regarding changing fontsize in the Netscape
newsreader.

The problem I'm having is with the font size within web pages. For
example, when I go to the Creative site, the font is very small, jagged
and boxy looking. I tried changing the font size in the preferences
dialogue, but that hasn't helped.

Thanks in advance for any help,

I've tried to figure out how to use several gui newsreaders, in an
effort to find one that allows me to read the newsgroups offline.

I noted a reply to a fairly recent request for the same, and I checked
out the apps mentioned. I believe the problem is that I lack a
fundamental understanding of how offline reading works. For example, is
offline reading supposed to be possible in Netscape?

Would somebody be able to point me to a fairly comprehensive lesson on
this topic? (I have 2 Linux manuals - 1000 page monsters, but they only
touch briefly on the subject).

Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I can't be online for great
lengths of time.

mount -t vfat /dev/{your windows partition} /{which dir you want it
mounted on}

remember to unmount after you finished

umount /dev/{your windows partition}

eg: if your windows partition is in hda1 and you want to mount it on
/mnt then go

mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /mnt

then cd /mnt to access the partition

when finished make sure to unmount (and make sure you are no on the
partition when you unmount it)

Hope that helps

Check out /var/log/messages to get some clue why lpd died.
In one window restart lpd and find out why the daemon died.
$ su -
password: <secret>
# lpd
Did it die?

If not in another window
execute lpr, did lpd died in the first window?

It does not work on your system. Your data is in danger. And due to a
Windows bug, if one extended partition type 0F exists, all extended
partitions must be type 0F or 85, even if they end cylinder 1023 or
below.

If you buy an AHA 2940 PCI PNP card, you will still have the same problem
:)

$ su -

## create initial ramdisk images for preloading modules such as your SCSI

## 2.2.14-6.1.1 is the kernel version and it will read the
/etc/conf.modules for the SCSI info.
# mkinitrd /boot/initrd-2.2.14-6.1.1.img 2.2.14-6.1.1

# cp /etc/lilo.conf /etc/lilo.conf.bak
# vi /etc/lilo.conf

Edit you lilo.conf to preload your modules for your SCSI card.

boot=/dev/fd0
timeout=100
message=/boot/message
prompt
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.14-6.1.1
        label=linux
        root=/dev/hda4
### preload modules for your SCSI card here
        initrd=/boot/initrd-2.2.14-6.1.1.img
        append="hdc=ide-scsi"
        read-only

# /sbin/lilo

# reboot

Reboot and cross your fingers it should come up with your SCSI Card.

Actually, RedHat installation writes LILO to the /boot partition, if you have

Maybe I'm missing something because I only installed Linux a week ago,
and it's an old version, but when Linux boots up there should bea stream
of messages about what it's doing, and some of the lines will tell you
which descriptor goes with which drive. And if a drive isn't there (you
did change the jumper on the CDROM drive so it's now a slave?),
it shouldn't show up in the messages.

Admittedly, the messages can go by too fast to properly read them, but
you should be able to see the by entering
     dmesg
The pertinent lines will look like
  hda: ST3243A, 204MB w/32kB Cache, CHS=1024/12/34
  hdb: NEC CD-ROM DRIVE:282, ATAPI CDROM drive

The details will change, but the lines will let you know what drives
you have, and what descriptors go with them.

If the drive doesn't show up in the boot process, then you have to
step back and see what else you changed.
