I've just added some more memory to my computer. The correct amount is mentioned when
the computer starts up, but Linux can only see the first 64Mb. As this was how much it
had before, it suggests to me that I need to tell it that I've installed the memory. I
don't know how, however.

I'm running a recent version of Debian, although I'm not sure which off-hand.

I had a similar error message during RH 7.0 install, but the error message
included an announcement that it was going to enable my swap partition to
complete the install.
If you are dual booting with windows, you might want to use fips to split
your hard drive before starting linux installation. Then use Disk Druid
during installation to create a swap partition (along with a root and a boot
partition, at a minimum). I had 32mb of ram, and in each of two
installations, I got some kind of error message and announcement about not
enough memory and enabling the swap partition.
My swap partition (created by Disk Druid during installation of linux) was
about 40 mbytes, IIRC.

Yep, it's required. You can find it at the main enlightenment ftp site.
I don't have the link, but poke around a bit and you'll find it. It may
be at the mirrors as well. Just go to http://www.enlightenment.org/ and

This is a very common problem.

You need to add the line 'append = mem=128Mb' to lilo.conf and rerun
lilo (replace the 128Mb with your amount of memory).

We installed redhat 7.1 on a laptop, if we select "everything" in the
package list and install is uses a lot more disk space than manually
selecting all the packages (ie selecting all the radio buttons with
the sole exception of 'everything').
The everything option is too much for our disk space, but I'm interested
in what packages are missed by not doing everything. Where can I find the list
for RedHat 7.1 that maps packages installed vs. which radio buttons
are selected to figure out if any I miss are important?

thanks,
Mark

I don't know what card you have but i bought a cheapo Linksys Home
Anywhere kit with two cads and a Hub, and the Tulip driver is working
fine on this card. It was detected and installed with no input from me
other than normal IP, mask, gateway, etc.

BTW This was with RH 7.1 on a clean install. I'm just now setting up my
Home network and this is the first NIC card I have put in my other wise
very old P166.

Package selection groups are in /RedHat/base/comps on CD1. You'll have
to figure a lot out...

Hi jon

I have a setup with linux rh 7,win95,nt4 server,and win2000 professional,all
dual booting on one machine.
I found that the linux boot menu was not available after all these
installs.I found the solution in fdisk.
First I booted into win95,and selected command prompt.Startted fdisk and
selected the Linux partitioon as the active partition. After this the Linux
boot menu came up first, giving me dos/linux option.
perhaps you can boot up with a win95 boot disk to perform the fdisk thing.
One last point,my Nt4 and win2000 are both operating in a dos partition
only,so I can see them from other operatinmg systems.
Being a home user, security is not an issue.
I hope this helps

Cheers/Pete

Not exactly what you asked, but I'd use a distro with a leaner install
program rather than RH. Try Debian or Slackware.

The source code of linux is installed and on the path

The smallest distrbution will be will be about the size of single CD
capacity, 650 megs. Downloading the distros are eithe for people who
have fast connections or can resume their downloads.

Remember that IF Microsoft ever let you download Windows for free it
would take a reasonable amount of time as well. And IF Windows ever came
with as much as Linux does it would take a long time too so keep that in
mind when you complain about how long it takes to download Linux. You get
a lot more with Linux than with Windows, and that's just with 1 CD.

If your ISP disconnects you after 2 hours then you need to find a better
ISP. I can be on for 9 hours w/o being disconnectd but then again im not
cheap and i pay for my service.

man mount, man fstab hold most information

1) Make sure your kernel has support for fat32 (default when you use the
standard kernel which ships with any distribution, but if you compile
your own check it. vfat supports the long filenames used by win95/98)
2) Create a mount point ( an empty directory where you want to acces the
windows partition, typically "mkdir /mnt/win" )
3) Mount the windows partition so that it will be accesible from linux ;
   mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /mnt/win
Find which partition is the windows one by using the command
"fdisk -l" which should give output like this:

Disk /dev/hda: 255 heads, 63 sectors, 1027 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 bytes

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hda1 1 192 1542208+ c Win95 FAT32 (LBA)
/dev/hda2 193 205 104422+ 82 Linux swap
/dev/hda3 * 206 512 2465977+ 83 Linux
/dev/hda4 513 1027 4136737+ 83 Linux

4) When that works you can mount that partition automagically at boot by
   adding an entry to /etc/fstab.
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
/dev/hdc1 /win vfat rw,auto,errors=remount-ro 0 0

Remember that vfat doesn't have native pemissions and owners, so that
trying to change them, whith chmod, or chown is impossible. They are set
in the mount options in /etc/fstab. See "man mount" and "man fstab" for
more info, especially in the FAT and VFAT sections.

My suggestion would thus be to make the windows partition completely
owned by an user, by adding the options uid=jl,guid=jl where
you substitute jl with the correct (g)uid. You can find those with
the "id" command.
The default permissions are set with umask variable, umask=002 is pretty
standard.

The result would be something like:

/dev/hda5 /mnt/win vfat user,uid=1001,guid=501,exec,umask=002 0 0

The mount option "user" means the partition isn't mounted at boot, but
can be mounted by any user as needed. Other would be to use the option
"auto" the partition is then mounted at boot.

Those are built in in the kernel, when the mainboard/bios is supported.
Generally those features are only used on laptops.
