I am new to Linux. I am installing RH 7 server in HP LH6000, however
after installation, I could not find any reference manual on how to
install GUI on server platform. And I need to install Arcserve backup
on Linux, am I right that the installation needs GUI as well?
Thanks

And you are definately trying to load the ne2000-pci module,
i.e. insmod ne2k-pci io=0xb400 irq=10
if you are then I think you've just hit the limit of my experience. The
only things I can suggest are to check /proc/ioports and /proc interrupts
to see if any of your other hardware is using the same set of resources.
If that is the case there may be a utility to change the io and irq
settings of your card to prevent the conflict.
Sorry I can't be of more help,

Outside of X my redhat 7 machine reconises my left-hand Alt key as Meta
(e.g. in emacs, alt-F moves forward one word). Inside X (using Gnome and
Sawfish), however it's recognised as Alt (e.g. I have to rebind sawfish's
cycle windows from Meta-tab to alt-tab and alt-F no longer works in emacs
so I have to use Esc,f instead).
I've spent a day or so checking out various how-to's, man pages and
searching red-hat's site, but have drawn a blank on the two following
questions
- how do I convince XFree86 v4, Sawfish and/or Gnome that my left Alt key
is the Meta key?
- is it a good idea to do so, or is there a good reason why the default
setup is how it is?
TIA

well, if you're using mandrake ...
try DrakConf and the boot-option
but if your system was setup during installation
to use LILO that might not work.
last method: run /sbin/grub as root

out in decent time - so you should be able as well

Windows 2000 will not dual-boot with Linux, at least not with LILO.

I just read some material, it said that you had to install X window first
before install KDE. Then, may I know how could I install GNOME, e.g., what
RPMs should I install, and in which sequence.

If you wrote the programs in win9x machines, you have either to cenvert them
in Unix format, or to use the perl perlscript.pl in order to execute the
script.

You can use GRUB, or you can use a more recent version of LILO.
(Versions since about six months ago can boot past the 1024th cylinder.)
Installing either of these in RH 6.0 that's installed past the 1024th
cylinder initially could present some problems. Chances are you could
get it to work by creating a boot floppy, using that to boot the first
time, and then updating/replacing LILO.
Another option would be to create a layout that looks like this:
10MB primary ext2 Linux /boot partition
9GB primary FAT-32 Windows 2000
4GB logical ext2 Linux / and additional Linux partitions
This way, the Linux kernel (stored in /boot) goes entirely below the
1024th cylinder, no matter what. If you've got PartitionMagic, this
shouldn't be difficult to set up; just shrink/move the Windows partition
and create appropriate ext2 partitions. I can make no guarantees of how
Win2K would react to having its partitions changed in this way, though.
WinNT 4.0 is certainly quite finicky, but I've less experience with
Win2K in this respect.

I'm pleased to say this is just plain wrong. I've done it. It works. Of
course, there are plenty of things that can make it NOT work, so I'm
sure you ran into one of them.

Hi, for the various command line options etc.,
man startx and man xinit may be worth looking at. One easy trick is
to use different color depths for different resolutions- if you can
live with the depth difference and the chip supports it of course.
This is handy for external monitor usage.

Ok, I'm a newbie here so hopefully this isn't to dumb of a question.
A buddy of mine setup a Email server for our company. Actually it was a
rebuild. We are running Red Hat 6.1 and any new user we add doesn't
seem to be able to login to their email account.
I add a user via ADDUSER "Username". It doesn't prompt me for a
password, so I use PASSWD "Username" to change it. But then, it never
lets this user log in.
We cannot figure out why this is happening.
Any suggestions?

I'm a complete Linux newbie who installed RH 7.0 at work and at home,
both on PCs with Windows. At work the machine boots up with the RH
dual-boot option (linux, dos) which is what I want, but at home it just
boots Windows. The main difference between the machines is that the
work machine has two hard drives, with Linux on the second one, while
at home I just have one HD. What's the trick to getting the home
machine to be dual boot?
BTW, is there any way to change the default boot from Linux to DOS?
Thanks for any guidance,

I can't login in to the server thru telnet, nor can

It never asks for the password.
I can still Ftp to the server, and the ftp, web and

Is there any way I can get back shell access

We are using RedHat 6.2.
