Hi all,

I wonder if someone might know what the solution for my problem could
be. I know some other people that had the same problem, but no one knew
how to solve it.

I had installed both Linux Mandrake 7.0 and the Win98 on the same hard
disk, when I decided to defragment the disk under Windoze. I thought
that this should not be a problem, because Windows was not able to 'see'
the Linux partitions. It has however destroyed the LILO, so it is not
possible to boot up neither Linux nor Windoze.

Someone told me that it might be possible to recover the system by
reinstalling the linux as an upgrade, and that it would recover the
LILO, but it was not possible to reinstall it, because it seems that it
has also destroyed the partition system of Linux.

Does anyone know if it is possible to recover the system after this
problem, or any idea how to defrag the hard disk without destroying the
Linux?

Cheers,

        Unai

Thank you for the help you've given

Fortunately for me, nothing terrible happened, and when I booted with the
rescue disk from Red Hat, it must have fixed something because the optioins
are set as before. I took a look at lilo.conf and it's similar to what
chem-r-us wrote. But for some reason, gnome isn't working very stable, and
even rebooted on me when I was trying to install staroffice 5.1.
Question?
Although this as been answered here sometimes, how can I change the
resolution on my desktop to 1024*768 @ 85Mhz ? Whenever gnome starts, it
jumps to the 1200*1024 and I have to do ctrl + alt + -, to decrease the
virtual size. I edited the x11/xf86config file, and commented with #
anything above 1024*768, but that didn't work. also, running XF86CONFIG
didn't help.

Another point to remember with executables on CD's is that the
device must be mounted with "exec" permission in order to run the
executable directly from the CD. See man mount for details.

Welcome to Linux-land!
SuSE 6.4 or any other number IS Linux, meaning that YOU are the master and
everything can be done the way you want.
If you are afraid to tackle this little bull by the horns - trick him.
Delete the three last partitions from disk, with either DOS bootably diskette
with FDISK.EXE on it (you can create such from Windows MS-DOS prompt screen) or
with Linux fdisk.
This leaves the 2Gb Windows partition and 5Gb type 83 (ext2) partition for
Linux.
BTW where is your swap partition?
If you have not prepared the partitions for Linux install and expect the
installation to do it for you delete the 5Gb partition and during install set
the size.
The additional partitions needed for storing data can be created later on
un-assigned space with the tools provided by each OS.
Have a lot of fun... (that's SuSE greeting)
Stanislaw.

Hi,

i want to move from M$ to Corel Linux (but also KEEP Win98 for now) and
have a few questions:

1. i want to install paralell onto a win98 drive (C:\windows\ +
C:\Linux\ - all Fat32). will this ruin my win98 installation?

2. if i decide to later install Linux onto its own partition with its
own file system, how do i delete linux from my fat32 C: drive without
disturbing my win98 installation?

3. are there any benefits to the linux file system?

4. could you give me some examples of these benefits?

5. if linux is on my C: drive (fat32) with windows, can linux
wordperfect red my win wordperfect documents, and vica-versa?

6. if linux is on its own partition with its own file system, can linux
WP then still read my win WP documents on my C: drive (fat32)?

7. any suggestions on how to best share files between the two system
during my (long) transition period between linux and windows 98?

Thanks, but not quite enough information.

I havent done anything to my hddrive yet. Except the partitions (mentioned
before) and installed win98se.
Can i do a straight install without removing the partitions and create linux
partitions ( / and swap ) direct to the second partition ( ignoring the
other win partitions )? Would win98se cope with this and have fat32
partitions around the linux partition? Or would it throw a number of
errors?

Am I right in saying that under the SUSE install proceedure (YaST) I can
remove a win partition and re-format it to linux ( after re-partitioning for
/ and swap ) without causing damage to the other win partitions?

Can I remove all the partitions (apart from the first one with win98se on
it), and then install linux, and then use msdos fdisk (?) to re-create the
final partitions (which would be for win98se)?

The problem is, is that I tried to install linux before (on my old PC) and
ended up loosing loads of data. I do backups, but aint got the time for
re-installing everything. I have already got my hands burned and dont want
it to happen again, so all information is greatly appreciated.

Anyone with a step-by-step guide to solving this problem would be greatly
appreciated.

Cheers
Rich.

Edit /etc/X11/XF86Config in the Screen Section for the driver you are using.
In Modes put the desired resolution first in line and it will start up with
that as default. Be sure you make the change in the section for the color
depth you are using, or just change them all if you use different color
depths. You may find that it goes into a virtual using 1200 x 1024, in
which case you can add a line that says Virtual 1024 768 (no x in that). I
am not sure if that still happens with X, but it used to be that it assumed
a virtual of the highest resolution listed.

Subject: Soundcard Problems.
Date: Tue, 18 Jul 2000 10:15:20 GMT

Dear Group

I have a problem here with sound which is driving me insane..! Has
anyone managed to get any sound from a Trident soundcard using alsa
drivers or any others for that matter. The reason I ask is that I have
a Trident addonics sv 750 soundcard which under kernel 2.2.14-15mdk is
detected by sndconfig but that reports that the card is not supported
but I should try alsa-project..! I tried alsa-drivers with the -lib
-utils-0.5.8 which required the 2.2.16 kernel which i've clean installed
at least 10 times but as yet no joy. I've done all the usual things
like enable sound support only in the kernel, setup a module in the
kernel and even selected the option to install a trident driver for the
4DWave DX. Nothing seems to work. Infact it gets worse. Once I've
updated the kernel to 2.2.16, I can run sndconfig but get the following
message:

' You don't seem to be running a kernel with modular sound enabled '

Well I think I am. Sound support is enabled every time. It works OK
until I do the update then everything goes pear shaped - a bit like my
head at the moment. :o)

I've tried using the 2.4test kernel but again, no joy. Any ideas..?

Many thanks

Subject: PCMCIA modem setup problem
Date: 18 Jul 2000 10:30:57 GMT

Hi,

A friend of mine has a Gericom Overdose-2 laptop with two PCMCIA
cards from ActionTec - a V.90 modem and a 10/100 Ethernet card.
It used to work more or less fine under RH6.1 - sometimes
eth0 interface did not boot up properly (requiring to reboot) but the
modem worked flawlessly.

After a major HDD failure we had to install OS-es from scratch (Windoze
98 & Linux) so we upgraded Linux to RH6.2 (kernel 2.2.14). The modem
stopped working. PCMCIA starts up and reports error like:

cs_serial: RequestIRQ Resource in use.

And then, "setserial -g /dev/modem" reports IRQ=0 (zero!) which, of
course, is in use (system timer uses irq=0).

Under Windows, it gets IRQ=3, as expected on COM2 (I disabled second
serial port of the laptop (infrared port)) so the PCMCIA modem
gets configured as COM2. And, under Win98, it works fine.

It worked only once under Linux but this must have been a miracle ;-)
Now I can reboot it as many times as I want, go to Windows then to
Linux, nothing helps. I also experimented with "PNP OS" setting in
BIOS, no success.

Is there a way to configure IRQ port on the PCMCIA modem card to some
reasonble value?

Anu hints would be appreciated. I'm a bit confused as the very same
modem card works fine under Windows and it used to work fine under
earlier version of RedHat Linux. So it is rather NOT a problem with the
modem itself. In particular, NO, IT IS NOT A WINMODEM ;-)))))

regards, Michal.

Yes, isn't that aggravating? Look at this:
rpm -qa |grep something-like-it
That's a HANDY thing to find the package's RIGHT name, when you don't know.
AND rpm -qa >rpmlist and you get all the installed packages in a text list.

IMHO the problem is with remote side. Look. If you connect no PPP server
such as in
FreeBSD, Linux, etc, you shall see LCP packets like a garbage. No one
such server
doesn't send plain text with IP address. So, I think, remote server does
not support LCP
negotiation. So, you need some script, which will parse information from
remote server,
extract IP and MTU, and then you need to start pppd with that options
and with disabled
LCP negotiation.

Such procedire was used by some providers with SLIP protocol (before
transition to PPP)
since it doesn't support negotiation of network parameters.
