I have never used linux before. Im awesome at dos windows and mac and
wanted to try it out so i partitioned my hardisk made a swap and an ext2
with partition magic i also installed boot magic for windows. Well then i
went and installed linux. I want to use a version that supports RPM's so I
had redhat 5.2, Mandrake; 6.0, 6.1 and 7.0 so I figured i would use the
newest version of mandrake 7 well I installed it and then i went to set up
lilo no matter what i did where i installled it it would not go so i
figured i could boot off the cd no problem the command was "linux
root=/dev/hda5 noinitrd" so then it wanted my graphics card i have a 3dfx
vodoo 3 3500 tv agp. Wasn't supported so i picked standard vga. I got the
servertype set up I saw the desktop then it wanted me to make a bootdisk.
That kept failing so i gave up on it i had one from linux 6 and i have the
cd's. Well then I went to boot and it loaded up but about half way through
loading it stopped and said kernal panic couldn't mount VFS (filesystem i
believe, not sure just seems logical virtual file system?) thats where im
stuck! I installed the other versions of linux that i have them and they
wouldn't boot or my graphics card didn't work at all so i came back 2 7.0
and thats where i am i tried reinstalling same thing. If someone could
help me i would really appreciate it! Thanx in advance~Tyler

Subject: NFS configuration in rc.d changed for Redhat 6.2?
From: Ethan Brown <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Date: 19 Jul 2000 15:27:39 -0700

Dear fellow Linux users--

I recently upgraded from Redhat 6.0 to Redhat 6.2 and noticed that my
NFS stopped working from boot. It would work, however, when i ran
/etc/rc.d/init.d/nfs stop
/etc/rc.d/init.d/nfs start.

I compared the old configuration and found that in rc3.d (my bootup
runlevel) the link name was something like S60nfs (link to
../init.d/nfs), but in the 6.2 configuration it was something like K25nfs.

Looking in /etc/rc.d/rc I saw that the "K" scripts get run before the
"S" scripts--the "K" scripts are also referred to as "Kill
scripts"--so my feeling is that the init.d/nfs script commands like
rpc.portmap, rpc.mountd, etc. are being run before some other key
services necessary for NFS are available. Experimenting and replacing
the link K25nfs with S60nfs seems to make NFS work fine after boot.

My questions are: (1) has anyone else run into this? (2) Does your 6.2
configuration look like mine? and (3) can you see any downside to my
fix of just renaming the link to S60nfs in the rc.d/rcN.d directories?

Thank you very much for your opinions and advice.

I've got a friend who's got a question about SW 2.0.13. He's trying to
export a fs via nfs, and get it to survive reboot. Any help would be
appreciated.

Hi,
I have an old smc-ultra network card installed on Packard Bell 8950
computer. The computer can detect its existence (using ifconfig, at
io=0x380 irq=10). I can also see it from conf.modules (alias eth0
smc-ultra). I also checked the host, ip address, rounter. Everything are
fine. However, when I tried ping, it does not work.

Actually, at one time (several month ago, it worked) It does not working
since last week I restall the RedHat 6.1. Anybody can remind me possible
solution.

Also, the options smc-ultr io=0x380 irq=10 does NOT work at all.

Thanks.

So *that* is what nicked my address book a couple of months ago! I just

If only it was that simple. I had techsupport from Creative try and figure this
out, to no avail. I would be happy with garbled sounds at this point!
Eventually, I'll find someone to help with forcing the settings. Since I can't
turn off the Pnp in my bios, like the tip you offered suggests, I have a
feeling that might be the cause, or at least adding to it. I will try and
re-load the drivers. They're instructions are a little generic for my level of
use. The very first step they want, will not execute. 'tar -xvfz' Since I am new
to Linux, this is a slow battle. Thanks for your time - Chris

Will the Linux install take over the machine or should I install it in a

A better question is what did you do? RPM doesn't get broken on its
own. Do you have bz2 installed?

Linux needs its own partition, its not FAT32 like Win98's one, so you'll
have to re-partition it, ok?

outputs correctly to the sreial port (so I know that at least the TX

Hi there:

Here's what I have: redhat 6.2 and 3COM 509(b) card. IP assigned by DHCP.
I followed the instructions (used netcfg) to configure eth0, hostnames, DNS,
etc.
After I run dhcpcd and ifconfig I can see eth0 interface with assigned IP
address. I can even see the number of RX/TX packets. I also can see traffic
going back/forth on gnome network manager.
The weird thing is that I cannot access anything outside -- I can't even
resolve the names.

The only thing I didn't do was to turn off PnP on my card, but eth0
interface is initiated OK, so that shouldn't be a problem, I think.

Any help/ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much,
Dj

It's most definitly NOT a WinModem. Take it out of PNP mode and set it

The program is called :

shapecfg

This is the command line stuff :

shapecfg attach <device> <device>
shapecfg speed <device> <speed>

Attached will be the docs.

Traffic Shaper For Linux

This is the current ALPHA release of the traffic shaper for Linux. It works
within the following limits:

o Minimum shaping speed is currently about 9600 baud (it can only
shape down to 1 byte per clock tick)

o Maximum is about 256K, it will go above this but get a bit blocky.

o If you ifconfig the master device that a shaper is attached to down
then your machine will follow.

o The shaper must be a module.

Setup:

A shaper device is configured using the shapeconfig program.
Typically you will do something like this

shapecfg attach shaper0 eth1
shapecfg speed shaper0 64000
ifconfig shaper0 myhost netmask 255.255.255.240 broadcast 1.2.3.4.255 up
route add -net some.network netmask a.b.c.d dev shaper0

The shaper should have the same IP address as the device it is attached to
for normal use.

Gotchas:

The shaper shapes transmitted traffic. It's rather impossible to
shape received traffic except at the end (or a router) transmitting it.

Gated/routed/rwhod/mrouted all see the shaper as an additional device
and will treat it as such unless patched. Note that for mrouted you can run
mrouted tunnels via a traffic shaper to control bandwidth usage.

The shaper is device/route based. This makes it very easy to use
with any setup BUT less flexible. You may well want to combine this patch
with Mike McLagan <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>'s patch to allow routes to be
specified by source/destination pairs.

There is no "borrowing" or "sharing" scheme. This is a simple
traffic limiter. I'd like to implement Van Jacobson and Sally Floyd's CBQ
architecture into Linux one day (maybe in 2.1 sometime) and do this with
style.

Alan
