It's not in the list returned by sysctl, and attempting to set
it via the /proc filesystem returns an error. Is defrag now
always on? If not, what's the equivalent in 2.4?
Thanks

Thanks - somehow the fact that eth0 was also on irq 3 had slipped past
me.
Any way I can force the modem to another irq? I ask because the new
serial driver won't compile on 2.2.18, but upgrading to 2.4 would
probably mean buying a different video card (long story).

The problem was in the BIOS. The power management was turning off the drives
and monitor when the console was not used for more than 1/2 hr. This stopped
all access to the machine.

Hello,
Would probably get a better response to this question posting it to one of
Redhat's mailing lists.
https://listman.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/
Guinness-list Discussion list for Red Hat 7
Redhat-list General Red Hat discussion list
Seawolf-list Discussion Group for Red Hat 7.1
Please note these lists can create VERY heavy volumes of traffic, if you
subscribe you might want to dedicate an e-mail address to them exclusively.
Archives are available for thes lists also. I remember seeing references to
Domino recently.

I'm trying to install a tar.gz package (kuickshow-0.8).
During ./configure I got several error messages which I managed to solve one
by one by installing additional packages (XFree86-devel, zlib1 and
zlib1-devel, libjpeg62-devel, libqt2-devel).
However I finally got stopped by following error message:
giflib30 required - install the kdesupport package
The problem is that kdesupport-2.1.1-3mdk is installed, but it does not
include giflib30.
What is wrong here?

I think this is changed with 2.4 kernels. This is what I find from
/usr/src/linux/Documentation/networking/ip-sysctl.txt:
IP Fragmentation:
ipfrag_high_thresh - INTEGER
Maximum memory used to reassemble IP fragments. When
ipfrag_high_thresh bytes of memory is allocated for this purpose,
the fragment handler will toss packets until ipfrag_low_thresh
is reached.
ipfrag_low_thresh - INTEGER
See ipfrag_high_thresh
ipfrag_time - INTEGER
Time in seconds to keep an IP fragment in memory.
Dat's eet.

I'm getting the following modprobe messages. Does anyone know what they
mean?
Can't locate module block-major-48
/etc/modules.conf is more recent than /lib/modules/2.4.2/modules.dep
Can't locate module sound-slot-1
Can't locate module sound-service-1-0
My sound card functions fine. So I guess the sound module is there?
Thanks,

Subject: fetchmail cron job is echoing on Slackware
Date: 10 May 2001 08:11:29 -0700
I've got two Linux boxes up; one is running SuSE 6.4, and one is running
Slackware 7.1.
Fetchmail is set up on both boxes (transferring server functions from SuSEBox to
SlackBox). Each user that has mail gets a .fetchmailrc and a cron job.
On the SuSEBox, I have this cron job set up for each user that gets mail:
*/1 * * * * fetchmail >/dev/null
That works fine. I keep pine open and email pops in regularly as it should.
However, on the SlackBox, when I'm logged in, fetchmail echoes everything it
processes into the console, so the text of incoming messages obliterates pine or
anything else.
When I run fetchmail >/dev/null at command line on the SlackBox, and I know
there is mail waiting to be received, it doesn't echo it.
Is there something funny with Slackware that doesn't allow >/dev/null in a
crontab? Or am I just doing something wrong? Please advise.

Do you have any idea what 'reasonable' settings for these parameters
are?
What should I set to mimic, as closely as possible, the behavior
of ip_always_defrag?

Subject: rsync transfer issues
Date: Thu, 10 May 2001 12:17:36 +0400
Crossposted-To: comp.os.linux.networking
Abstract: rsync fails with the error "Neighbor table overflow" when
transferring directories containing thousands of small files
Hello, I have a rather curious situation and could use some aid if
possible. Currently I am working on setting up a system by which a client
computer loads a networked ramdisk which contains a script that mounts a
local disk's filesystem and uses rsync to sync the files on that
filesystem with the files stored on a master system on the network. The
system WORKS currently, and I have been able to replicate linux systems
running Debian/testing and keep them in sync. This sort of setup is
important in a college lab environment, as is also the importance of this
system not requireing much administration - and that is where the problem
lies.
Currently, I can sync a system which has only a base Debian install
and partitioning done, which is good - but when I am rsyncing to a client
which has this basic setup, a problem ensues during the file transfer of
/usr - specifically, in areas where there are a lot of small files like
/usr/share/doc and /usr/share/texmf the rsync tends to freeze and after a
time, it displays the error "Neighbor table overflow" which no one has
heard of. I am not entirely sure what the problem is, I have only been
able to diagnose the conditions which lead to the error, specifically
that the error occurs when lots of small files are being transferred very
quickly, and that the error is random.
The plus side here is that by the very nature of rsync, the transfer is
fault-tolerant in that we can restart and the system will start
transferring where it left off. However, this is not an ideal situation
and would be difficult from an administration standpoint, certainly. So,
if anyone has any advice concerning this issue, I would sincerely
appreciate it.

I was bored and curious, so I finally upgraded to XFree86 4.0.2 and then
did the 4.0.3 upgrade. I had a fun time getting my X server configured by
hand using info in the 3.3.6 config file, but I have a strange problem.
XDM (which on my machine is an init script that calls KDM) will not load on
boot like it is supposed to. I had KDM working fine under XFree 3.3.6 and
I can get into 4.0.3 by calling startx. With this I don't even get an
error message, KDM just won't load. What happened to KDM? I have a
Savage4 chipset card and am using the driver supplied at the link below:

Yes, if one of your partitions has become full, that could very well be
the problem. Go to console mode, if you can, and see what df tells you.

That was a very interesting article, thanks. I am curious about why
someone would choose something other than XFS. It looks like it supports
everything the best. The only thing that I couldn't especially tell about
was the small files comparison between it and Reiser.
I'm especially curious about this because I may be getting about 100-200G
before the end of the summer for video editing, and filesystem
configurations will be an issue (especially large files).
