I replaced an Adaptec 2940uw with another 2940uw and Red Hat 6.2
started to have problems with the new card. Processes would not stay
active and when I restarted Linux again I received a CRC error. I
reinstalled
Linux and the installation hangs at different places in the install. I have
low level formatted my SCSI drive and checked the drive for errors.
The Adaptec 2940uw works with Windows (NT/95/98) but it is having problems
in Linux. The card I am having trouble with is running Adaptec BIOS
1.34.3. My other Adaptec 2940uw is running OK on this PC and has Adaptec
BIOS 1.32. I am wondering if there is a problem with versions of the Adaptec
2940uw BIOS and Linux. Any help would be greatly appreciated !

I have installed a Mandrake 7.2 distrib. I sat-up the CUPS printing
system. My printer is a network printer connected to a Windows NT box.
>From my Linux box I can print the test page by using the CUPS
Administration WEB system. However, I can't print by using the lpr
command. It does nothing.
If I go to the /var/spool/cups directory I see some files corresponding
to my attempts. If I type "lpstat -s" I obtain :
lp accepting requests
lp1 accepting request

Any idea ?

If you know so well what should be done, why don't you answer Thomas SMETS
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]> in the first place then, in stead of using exagarating
statements towards me?

Untill now I've only seen RTFM-answers, and that information does not bring
anyone too far, especially if [f.i.] a PCI-HOWTO is dating back to 1997,
and the PCI Ethernet card information in it is virtually zero.

Still it will not be too good an idea to put eth0 on IRQ 5 [or 7], I guess.

Perhaps you can better look up the original posting, and answer that one?

does anybody know how to install this sound card (build on motherboard) in

When i install it using sndconfig, the computer hangs on reboot saying

Then i have to manually edit soundcard and modules.conf file to restore

Hi,
This is kind of a dumb question since it doesn't seem to be bothering
anyone else, but I was wondering if there was a list of packages needed
to compile or rebuild RPMs. I installed gcc and some libraries and other
stuff, but I get an error when I try to either compile or rebuild source.

checking for gcc... gcc
checking whether the C++ compiler
        (gcc -O2 -m486 -fno-strength-reduce ) works... no
configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C++ compiler cannot
        create executables.
Bad exit status from /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.28002 (%build)

BTW I'm running Red Hat 6.1.

Subject: How to load linux if BIOS only boots HD?
Date: Mon, 11 Dec 2000 15:46:42 GMT

Hi,

I have a laptop (a Fujitsu Lifebook B142) with NT 4 (ugh...) which I
want to put Mandrake onto. The network card (PCMCIA) works fine in NT,
so I can get files into NT, and once I'm in the install, I'll be able to
install from another Linux box sharing the CD on NFS or FTP.

However, neither NT nor the BIOS recognises my floppy drive or my CD
drive (both external). The only sign of life from either of them is that
the CD drive has power once NT starts loading. I can't run loadlin from
within NT, it needs real DOS mode, which NT doesn't have.

I've found a trick involving making a small DOS partition in the free
space at the end of the drive (7 MB) and copying its boot sector to a
file which I would then point the NT boot loader at, but this won't work
for me as the NTFS partition is 4 GB, pushing the start of the DOS
partition outside the 2 GB limit. I've seen plenty of tools to downsize
partitions, but they all need DOS mode in the first place.

It seems the only option left is to rip out the HD and install using
another machine. I'm _really_ not keen to do this because I've never
opened a laptop of any kind before and I've heard that smaller ones
(this is a notebook, fairly small) aren't very user-serviceable on the
inside.

Someone _please_ tell me there's another way to do this... ?

Dear all,

I am running RH Linux 7.0 on an HP Kayak, which has
2x733 Mhz processors and 256 Mb of memory. I also run Windows 2000
from a separate disk. While booting Linux, the kernel reports and uses
only 64 Mb of
memory. Under Windows the entire memory is seen and used.

Any hints?

I can't be positive, but I suspect you're talking about a VIA 82c686
sound chipset. This thing is supported in kernels since sometime in the
2.2.x series, but not well. In my experience, the ALSA drivers
(http://www.alsa-project.org) are the most reliable for this chipset,
but they're a nuissance to install.

Not so. I looked at the IRQ settings in Win98. The IRQ for the network
card has not changed - it is still 3 (both WIn98 and Linux). In Win98,
the Hollywood decoder card uses IRQ 9. Can you tell me how can I detect
the Hollywood card when I boot into Linux - and how can I force it to
use IRQ9 which is the same as my Win98 settings?
Thank you
Jaideep

I am not a debian guru, but try "apt-cdrom add " - then try dselect again
