Rob,
Thanks for the help, but iostream and namespace are in my program, this is
just a reduced code example. Oddly, if I replace cout with printf, this
little program runs just fine. The problem is not in the code but in the
libraries.

Thanks. It does make sense because it's a pci card after all. I did
get a isapnp.conf file from somebody but I obtained no sound from it.

Hello,
I have 12 Giga hard drive with 4 logical partitions, the first one 6
Giga contains WIN-NT (cylinder 1 to 826). The next partition is my linux
Suse it starts from cylinder 827 to 1221. My problem now is that I can
not manage to configure the Win-NT boot.ini to start linux.
I created a file called bootsect.lnx containing /dev/hda2 using dd,
copied this file to WinNT drive and modified the boot.ini.
An attempt to boot linux results in nothing but a black screen - but no
error msg!
The only thing that works is booting via a boot floppy disk!
I am pretty sure that this is something like a standard problem - found
lots of info in the web - anyway I am no experienced linux user :-))
Thanks for your help!

I'm running redhat 6.2 and i want it to serve as the spooler for a HP
plotter with a jet direct card. Printing will be done from windows machines
with the correct drivers installed, but for trouble shooting purposes I am
trying to print from the linux box using a text file with commands
understood by the plotter. when i use the "lpr -P plotter testfile" the
file gets spooled in /var/spool/lpd but never makes it to the plotter! My
printcap is as follows:
plotter:\
:lp=:\
:rm=plotter:\
:rp=raw:\
:lf=/var/spool/lpd/plotter.log:\
:sd=/var/spool/lpd/plotter:
I can ping plotter and even telnet into plotter from the linuxbox. I am
completely frustrated so any small piece of info would be GREATLY
appreciated.

Dale,
Try using 'g++' (the GNU C++ compiler) when you compile instead of 'gcc'
(the GNU C compiler).

You'll need to check your kernel version, I think.Off the top of my head, I
think you need at least 2.2.13 - but I remember I downloaded 2.2.15, so
perhaps you should try that. When I downloaded and built it, it still didn't
build the device drivers for me, I had to run a separate script to do that.
Unfortunately I can't remember the name of it, but it was
MAKEDEV.<something-or-other> - try a 'find / -name "MAKEDEV.*"
I did read a good HOWTO on all this, which I think was something like
ide-tap.HOWTO, but the base ide HOWTO makes a good starting point.
You'll also need to understand how to build the new options for the tape
drive into your kernel, so you'll need to read the kernel HOWTO as well.
You'll need this to install and build your new kernel anyway.
Have fun ! While you're recompiling the kernel, remember to optimise it for
your processor, it's probably built for i386 at present (unless you've been
through before) and you could see some performance gain from that alone.
Regards,
Martin.

You need to install a specific driver for it, I had the same problem with my
onboard video card, although a different one. I also have a Dell at work, might
be a coincidence, might not be, but, I don't know where you can download this
driver, but once I installed it on my PC, Startx worked perfectly.

13GB (7 for redhat, 6 for win98)

If your SuSE 6.0 installation is still running I would suggest to
update using YaST1. Normally, you can start YaST1 by booting from
CD2 instead of CD1. I think, it should also be possible to start it
using the SuSE boot disks.
Hope this helps!

I had the same problem. I think you need to run lilo before running the dd

that your current bootsect.lnx contains 512 0's)
# lilo-v

Hello Andrew,
When you tried to install RedHat, did you setup your RH partition as a

The RedHat DiskDruid utility will enable you to easily do this.

Well, first of all, why don't you pick up a copy of Mandrake?

The performance increase is amazing!

This is VERY FAQ, and could have been found had you done a quick search
at deja.com, or Caldera's Knowledge Base. At any rate, what you want is
runlevel 3. When the bootup menu appears, hit "e" on your keyboard.
Then edit the bootup line by placing a space and then a "3" at the end.
That will get you into runlevel3.

you can find the drivers for the 810e chipset at
http://support.intel.com/support/graphics/intel810/linuxpredrivr.htm
I've installed it on a similar machine, suse 6.4, kernel 2.2.16 and get a similar
error -

(--) SVGA: error doing ioctl(GARTIOCINFO): Invalid argument

your missing /dev/agpgart error should be corrected by the above install - it does
get setup. I wish I knew where my invalid argument was coming from though.

Subject: Suse kernel will not load SCSI module
Date: 20 Jul 2000 18:05:05 GMT
Hallo !
I have a problem with my SCSI hostadapter module:
I am using Suse 6.4 kernel K_I386.
For normal working, the only device connected to my NCR 53810 is the
CDROM-drive.
As Suse Setup chrashed, I had to finish the setup manually.
I added the line
alias scsi_hostadapter sym53c8xx
An when I call
"modprobe scsi_hostadapter"
the module is loaded and everything works fine.
But when I do not load the module manually and try to mount a CD in the
drive,
bash tells
"wrong major or minor number"
and does not load the module automatically.
Normally Suse uses
/dev/cdrom (a link to /dev/scd0), I also tried /dev/sr0, nothing of the
three methods works.
With redhat autoloading when mounting the CDROM works fine ...
Thanx,
Matt

Subject: Apache sending me mad
Date: Thu, 20 Jul 2000 19:03:02 +0100
Old distro - Slackware 96 with Apache 1.0.0 running on a standalone box :-
I'm having problems with my Apache - It serves up a default index.html page
from /var/lib/httpd/htdocs which is the folder specified in
/var/lib/httpd/conf/srm.conf (the file that apache is reading - I checked.
The message says that I will probably want to replace the page with my own
index.html
So I did, copying the index.html from my own website into
/usr/lib/httpd/htdocs after deleting the default index.html.
After a reboot Apache still served up the default index.html whcih I had
just erased !
So I typed "locate index.html" and I found another index.html page at
/usr/lib/httpd/htdocs/index.html
Aha! thinks I - so I key :
# cd /usr/lib
okay
then:
# cd httpd
bash: httpd: No such file or directory
hmm.......?
What's happening here?
Am I losing my mind, or is Apache creating html on the fly?
Is Slackware Linux creating "phantom" directories just for the hell of it?
