Yes, thank you. If it hadn't been for your quick and decisive posting of
the link to a google search on my error, I would never have thought to
search for help on the subject of my error. I bow to your l33t link
posting skillz.

Seriously, when I wrote that "no one has heard of it" I meant no one
_here_. Obviously we went to google to find info on the subject, but none
of the information there was pertinant to our situation - IE, we already
initialize the loopback interface, so that isn't it.

Dear all,

I am setting up a router with programs namely "diald", "chat"
and "pppd". By providing an internet access request by ping, my modem
dials up to the ISP and a strange sound is given out. For this, I
believe that "chat" is OK. However, after "chat" dials, "pppd" works,
but a PPP connection cannot be established. By checking the system
log message, the following information is gained:

diald: running system pid=33 "/bin/ifconfig sl0 0.0.0.0 pointopoint 0.0.0.0 net"
diald: running system pid=34 "/bin/route add 0.0.0.0 metric 1 dev sl0"
diald: running system pid=35 "/bin/route add default metric 1 dev sl0"
diald: running dialer "/etc/config/connect"
diald: Running connect (pid = 37).
diald: Running pppd (pid = 43).
pppd: pppd 2.3.8 started by (unknown), uid 0
pppd: Using interface ppp0
pppd: pppd create pidfile
pppd: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/ttyS1
pppd: Serial line is looped back.
pppd: Connection terminated.
pppd: Exit.

For this, would any body tell me what the problem is and how
to solve it?

Moreover, I find that the ethernet port of my router cannot
"ping" another machines, but I can sure that the hardware is alright
as it can receive an IP from a DHCP server. Would someone tell me
what happens?

        Thanks for your help.

Best wishes,

Hello dave
I have been having the same problem, I found that my NIC was on the
same IRQ as my soundcard (SB live value) .
took out my soundcard and the eth0 interface came straight up.
DHCP now works and i am online.
Windows did not mind them being on the same IRQ both worked fine there
I have setup my NIC (smc ultra 16) on IRQ 3 now and disabled Com 2 in the
Bios, just got to get my sound working now on Slackware 7.1

Edit your /etc/inittab file. Take a look here:

    # Modified for RHS Linux by Marc Ewing and Donnie Barnes
    #

    # Default runlevel. The runlevels used by RHS are:
    # 0 - halt (Do NOT set initdefault to this)
    # 1 - Single user mode
    # 2 - Multiuser, without NFS (The same as 3, if you do not have
networking)
    # 3 - Full multiuser mode
    # 4 - unused
    # 5 - X11
    # 6 - reboot (Do NOT set initdefault to this)
    #
    id:3:initdefault:
<------------------------------------------------HERE

On your mashin it look like "id:5:initdefault" Change it to
"id:3:initdefault" and after reboot your box will come up in text mode. You
also can switch between init modes without reboot using "init <1-5>"
command.

Depends on the difference in hardware between the two computers. I used to
install my 486 on a Pentium (with modem + scsi, etc.), which the 486 didn't
have. They both had network cards, though...

I had to manually configure the network card on the 486 (different IO
address), but that was about it.

Just make sure you mount the device the same on both machines (e.g. /dev/hda
on pc1, /dev/hda on pc2), then you won't have troubles.

CTRL-ALT-F1 should take you to a command-line virtual terminal. CTRL-ALT-F7
should take you back to the GUI (KDE).

It is fixed in hardware, but you can simply use the driver/kernel-module
to override it in software.
man ifconfig, section "hw". The documentation for het network drivers
never says anything on whether or not your can override the hardware
adress with the driver, but an quite a few you can. Simple trial and
error. On my ne2k-pci card it works like a charm.

ifconfig eth1

That means that the LILO have loaded, but it can't read the descriptor
table from the map table.
This is tipically caused by a media failure (disk damaged) or by
a problem in the disk geometry. Boot from a boot disk and check
your lilo.conf file.

I do not know about reading other peoples multisession cds, but I know
that I had to find out the proper parameters for creating multisession
cds first.

>The only time I've seen this happen is when I've burned a multisession

Me too. It is important that the first session has different parameters
than the subsequent ones. The script for the latter reads out information
from the last session and gives that info to mkisofs, which results basicly
in adding the files to the existing filestructure. So when I mount this
multisessionCD, I see all the old and new files (I put them in different
directories) at the same time. I had no luck trying to mount just one
of the sessions.

This is regardless of kernel 2.2 or 2.4, with a scsi cdrw yamaha 16-6-4,
connected to the onboard adaptec scsi controller of an ASUS P2B-S.

I guess you are using Suse!?

go into yast (yast2) and change the login shell!
Will solve most of your problems!

The next time add the dist you use.

Mine works with the Linksys elcheapo two-card one hub setup.
Could be a configuration mis-step on your part. Easy to do.
I am using both basic types of LinkSys Tulip chip cards, one with
an authentic DEC chip and one with the Lite-On PNIC II chip.
Here are the pertinent parts of dmesg for them. Note that
the tulip.o in both these machines is in the same directory,
is exactly the same size, 48796 bytes, was created on April
8, 2001 at 16:54, and has the same banner in dmesg printout.
I assume that this is the module which is getting loaded
into the kernel in both cases.

For the box with the Tulip Clone chip:

Linux Tulip driver version 0.9.14 (February 20, 2001)
PCI: Found IRQ 11 for device 00:09.0
eth0: Lite-On PNIC-II rev 37 at 0xdc00, 00:A0:CC:32:5E:8D, IRQ 11.

And for the box with the Real DEC 21140 chip:

Linux Tulip driver version 0.9.14 (February 20, 2001)
PCI: Found IRQ 11 for device 00:09.0
eth0: Digital DS21140 Tulip rev 32 at 0x2000, 00:40:05:31:63:8A, IRQ 11.

> 3) know where I can get a tulip.o file that works with RH7.1?

Try /lib/modules/2.4.2-2/kernel/drivers/net/tulip/tulip.o

I don't think it was ever a RH problem - and SCYLD is
grandfathered out as well, as Becker didn't start
that up until recently - he wrote the bulk of the Ethernet
drivers as freeware while working on his BEOWULF for
the Govt, and (I'm guessing) did it for the love of
it. The problem with cheap clones like the PNIC is that
companies like LinkSys put in the real DEC chip, then
in mid-production for a basic board type, changed over
to the PNIC chip to save a few cents. No warning. I
was one of the victims of that switchover - cost me
a lot of time to figure it out. The PNIC chip handles
differently, and it took Becker a little time to get
on top of it. Give the guy a break - he fixed it,
and it didn't cost any of us a dime.

Make sure that you really cofigured the eth1 right!
(IP, active,...)
run in bash!
type ifconfig (there you see what you did)
type route (to see where your traffic goes)

(ifconfig and route can be used to update your system!)
I don't trust xwindows!

I have to do this, and I tryed to set up lilo to do it, but I couldn't.
What I ended up doing, is have the disk overlay enabled, and it will start
windows on boot. Then I have windows bring up a menu on startup where I can
select what OS I want. Put something like this at the top of c:\config.sys

[menu]
rem menuitem=<alias>, <title>
menuitem=Windows, Windows 98
menuitem=Linux, RedHat Linux 7.1
menucolor=7,0
rem menudefault=<alias>,<timeout in seconds>
menudefault=Windows,10

[Linux]

[Windows]
rem put your existing config.sys file here.

The put this at the top of your autoexec.bat file

goto %config%

:Linux
rem you need loadlin.exe in c:\, and also your kernel image. make root= to
whatever partition you
rem have linux installed on.
c:\loadlin c:\vmLinuz root=/dev/hda1 ro

:Windows
rem Put your old autoexec.bat here, if you have one.

You can get loadlin from a lot of places: off the redhat cd, debian cd, off
there ftp sites. If you can't find it, let me know and I'll find it for
you. Good luck!

PS: let me know if this doesn't work, I may have a typo or two.

 PG> modem? 14K? 28K? 56K?

Most modems do speed translations internally. Try it at a 115k setting
first, and if that works, leave it as thats faster than the line will
ever be. If not, slow it down to 28,800, its an older modem. To find
out how fast it is, grab a big file and watch the cps it gives with one
of the ppp watcher (like kppp) programs, then add another zero to the
right end of the report to get the baud rate its running at. 5600 cps
or thereabouts equals a 56k hookup, and so on.

Just one will do, of at least 128 megs.

PG> 3) How do I shield a box from giving off RF signals? My box

PG> this didn't improve it much.

Grounding doesn't help much when the grounding wires are many
wavelengths long. Good case design and a few ferrite 'beads' or chokes
can help though.

Unless you are running on tv mounted 'rabbit ears', the real problem is
the tv's own input. If its flat leadin, then the circuit is assumed to
be a balanced one, at least at the tv input. If one of the 2 wires is
off the tv, the balance, and the interference rejection obtainable via
the balanced input goes right in the toilet, by 30 or more db.

If its a coax setup because you have cable, then loose nuts on the coax
can similarly eat your lunch, as can cables that are so badly
constructed that the screw on end is constantly pulling off. Cable
quality itself can vary by as much as 80 db in shielding effectiveness
with the foil shielded cables being the best by about 70 db over a
doubled braid cable, assuming both have their F-59 connectors properly
installed. That in itself can be a black art, often accompanied by
chicken blood from the sacrifice. I like the Augat SNS series
connectors, they get the best grip on the cable of any I've seen so far.
And they *can* be installed without the $70 crimping tool once you
understand how they go together. A vice, and the right sized nut driver
for a pusher, and a hammer to apply the push works just fine.

Of the choices, the coax input of the newer tv's is much better
shielded. I'm a tv engineer FWTW.

Cheers, Gene
