I used printtool, attempted to access a printer close to my own (Xerox
c11) and did a test page which qued but did not print. I tried several
types of printers. Do you know how to load a daemon?

How about

    # dd if=/dev/sda1 of=/bootsect.lnx bs=512 count=1

and then repeat the rest steps?

Subject: How to setup other serial ports?

I've installed an Equinox SST4 port intelligent serial board in a
RH 6.1 system. It is recognised, and I can use the ports and a
modem connected to it with cu to dial out.

However, when I attempt to do anything like configure linux to be
aware of a modem on it, I don't see these ports.

The device names for inbound use are
        ttyQ1a1 ttyQ1a2 ttyQ1a3 ttyQ1a4

The names for outbound use are:
        cuq1a1 cuq1a2 cuq1a3 cuq1a4

What do I need to change to make stuff like linuxconf aware of

So far I have done the following -

Created boot file using (sda5 = /root):
# dd if=/dev/sda5 of=/bootsect.lnx bs=512 count=1

Copied "bootsect.lnx" from Linux partition to boot drive ( C:/ ).

Modified "boot.ini" to include:
c:/bootsect.lnx="Linux"

When I select "Linux" at bootup I get a black screen with a blinking
cursur.

Any ideas??

Thanks,

Shane

Subject: Freeze while booting w Promise Ultra100 IDE-Controller
Date: Thu, 20 Jul 2000 23:51:05 +0200

Hello,

I'm trying to install Linux on my computer. I tried different cd-roms out of
PC magazines and downloaded different images for boot disks. But so far I
had no luck. System freezes while identifying my hardware. Last lines
displayed are:

pty: 256 Unix98 ptys configured
RAM disk driver initialized: 16 RAM disks of 4096K size
loop: registered device at major 7
PIIX4: IDE controller on PCI bus 00 dev 39
        ide0: BM-DMA at 0xf000-0xf007, BIOS settings: hda:DMA, hdb:pio
        ide1: BM-DMA at 0xf008-0xf00f, BIOS settings: hdc:DMA, hdd:pio

After displaying these lines the system freezes.

Here's a list of my computers hardware:

Biostar M6TBA (Intel 82440BX-chipset) w 256MB RAM
Creative GraphicsBlaster TNT
Creative Soundblaster Live
AVM Fritz!Card PCI (ISDN adapter)
Promise Ultra100 IDE controller
LiteOn CD-ROM LT382 on primary on-board IDE-controller as master
Mitsumi CD-R/CD-RW CR4802TE on secondary on-board IDE-controller as master
IBM DTLA 307015 on primary Ultra100 IDE-controller as master
IBM DTTA 351010 on secondary Ultra100 IDE-controller as master

As far as I was able to find out, the Promise card is the cause of my
problems. I checked the system without the card and Linux setup screens
appeared as expected.

What can I do? (Other than just kick the card out ;-) Has anybody managed to
install Linux on a system with a Promise Ultra100 card?

Peter

That's it. I fell into the trap of thinking that gcc, since c plus another

Subject: Escape key twice in console
Date: Thu, 20 Jul 2000 21:58:07 GMT

I believe this to be a general Linux question, but I'm using Slackware 7 on
an i586 cpu 64mb ram.

In console mode, my escape key acts as a sticky modifier -- pressing it once
waits for additional keystroke(s), sending a different command to the console
when pressed. As a result, if I want to send an ESCAPE to the program, I have
to press escape key twice.

I want to redefine this escape modifier to an "unsticky" key like Left Alt or
the "Menu" key thats next to the Ctrl key on Win95 keyboards, so I can hold
it down to send the modifier, instead of pressing escape. After that I want
a single escape key hit to send ESCAPE to the console.

Can anyone tell me how to make this change?

I have the same problem. I'm running a dual Win98/Redhat 6.2 system. When
I run Defrag under Windows, it seems to corrupt the Linux partitions. My
Linux boot disk did not help, as the ext2 file sytsem was corrupted and fsck
could not fix it. I had to reinstall Linux, and not use defrag.

No errors, at boot, or when trying to use the mixer, cdplayer, or system
sounds. When I try to play the sample, a seven second pause, but no sound. The
cat /proc- had no conflicts or errors. My /etc/lilo.conf has no reference to
pci. The system thinks it's working just fine. The only error I ever see, is
when I shutdown X- there is a 'kaudioserver fatal error' on the terminal
screen, I think from trying to play system sounds. As for the 'tar -gunzip' it
says there is no such file. I can gunzip it first, and then untar it. After
that - I can't 'make install' - thanks for your time - Chris

I'm new to Linux and I'd like to be able to perform the following functions
with hotkeys (in console mode) If you know how to set one or all of these up
or have an idea, please reply.

1) I want the Pause key to freeze/unfreeze the execution of the current VT,
or whatever is running in the current VT.

2) I want the CTRL+Uparrow (or another key) to spawn a new VT with a login
prompt. I've seen a Linux system configured to do this, but I don't know how
to do it on mine.

3) I want the CTRL + ALT + end (or another key) to destroy a VT. In other
words, I want it to kill whatever is running in the VT, then I want it to do
the opposite of #2 above.. I'm not sure exactly how to do this even without
hotkeys .. probably involves killing all processes running in the VT, then
calling the command that deletes VT's (I forgot what this command is called).

#1 and #3 are similar to commands accepted by the old DOS multitasker
DESQview, which is why I want my Linux system to perform them.

What about "aumix". It really seems like things are sort of working (except
for the obvious bit about not actually hearing any sound) *Maybe* raising the
output of one of the lines in aumix or some other mixer program will fix the
problem.

Also try playing a CD with something like cdplay.

Avoid using kde programs to test sound at this point, since they will need
kaudioserver running, (and from what you say it looks like it is dying).

If you can see that there is no conflict in any of the /proc/ stuff, AND
there are resources allocated for the sblive too, I don't think it is a
system conflict. Here's my /proc/interrupts by the way:

Subject: Brother M-1509 printer
Date: Fri, 21 Jul 2000 09:04:36 +1000

I have an old (ancient) Brother M-1509 printer that (I thought) I'd like to
use with Linux for drudge work like program listings, config file dumps,
etc. It works fine for text under MS-DOS but Windoze doesn't want to know
about it.

Linux (Red Hat 6.2, kernel 2.2.14.something I think) will print to it but
the command

# echo 012456789 >/dev/lp0

resulted in every second character being lost. I set up a printer (rather
than dump to the raw device) and replaced the default input filter script
(which resulted in no output) with a simple c program that duplicates each
letter input to it. For the trivial 'echo' example

# echo 0123456789 | lpr

this produced perfect output with no missing characters. Larger output,
however, e.g. ls -l | lpr, still results in (seemingly) random dropping of
characters, around 25-30% loss I'm guessing. The actual characters lost are
*not* consistent between subsequent runs of identical listings.

Thinking it was a timing issue, I rewrote the input filter program to *not*
duplicate letters but instead to introduce a delay between letters. This is
still resulting in missing characters around the same %age but definitely
*not* every second one. It also resulted in a damn slow printout.

Any advice appreciated (and yes, the Epsom Stylus order is to be placed this
weekend so this is largely an academic exercise).
