Subject: Boot CD-ROM
Date: Thu, 20 Jul 2000 13:05:33 -0500

Hi,

I am trying to make a CD-ROM that will act as a root fs. The idea is
that all I need is a floppy and CD-ROM drive (or even better, just a
CD-ROM drive) and I can run linux off the CD. I've created a 650MB ext2
image, installed what the boot-disk howto said I needed (using RPM),
tweaked a few files, and burned the image onto a RW-CD. I then created
a floppy disk with a kernel and /boot. After a few iterations (I didn't
get it right the first time), I got the kernel to boot, and the root
filesystem to mount in read-only mode (which, since it's on cd, won't
ever be mounted in anything other than read-only).

This, however, is as far as it gets. The kernel panics, saying is can't
find init. The error message is:

Kernel panic: No init found. Try passing init = option to kernel.

The init program *is* on the root fs, and *is* where inittab says it
should be. I've also tried using the init = option, but that doesn't
help (exact same error message).

Anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

Hi Chris,

Actually I had no problem setting up the SB Live! on Linux. Neither as a
module (using Creative's docs on setting it up), when I was running RH 6.0
nor now, that I've upgraded to 6.2, which makes it even easier, since
Creative's *support* made it right into the kernel - so now I've compiled
the sound driver into the kernel and have it loaded at startup, without the
need to edit the conf.modules file; if there's no hardware conflict Linux
will init it right away. I'd say the best way is to use the newest kernel,
since it's not only the sound driver that's improved..

Andy you should get things up and working by following the intel link,

Hi Phil. Take a look at

There's good info there on mixing and matching multiple

Date: Thu, 20 Jul 2000 19:39:04 GMT

I am attempting to use Windows 2000 boot loader to setup a dualboot with
linux.

What I have is -
Windows 2000, hda1, NTFS
Redhat 6.2 ( /root ), sda5
Redhat 6.2 ( /boot), sda1

What I have done -
In linux I created a boot file using:

    # dd if=/dev/sda5 of=/bootsect.lnx bs=512 count=1

I then copied "bootsect.lnx" to an NTFS drive.

I placed "bootsect.lnx" on the root directory of my boot drive.

I edited "boot.ini" and added the following line:

    C:\bootsect.lnx="Linux"

When I boot and select "Linux" I get a black screen with a blinking cursur
in the
upper left corner.

Any ideas.....

Thanks,

Stefan,
Thanks for the rec. I bougt a ATI All-in-Wonder 128 32MB video capture
card. Red Hat recognized it no prob. So, bttv works fuine for grabbing
static images from off of video?
It just needs to work under the command line and I'm back in business.

The email seems to be working -- I can send email from one machine &
receive it on the Linux box; however, when I go into elm, it says I have
no messages. The messages are being placed inside the 'mbox' file in
the user's default directory, but I was always under the assumption that
messages don't go there UNTIL they've been read. I'm assuming I just
haven't configured something correctly -- can anyone tell me what needs

You probably need a driver for your video card, looks like it doesn't like
you resolution, you can configure it yourself, look under
usr/X11R6/lib/X11/XF86Config, and change the resolution when you get to the
section "screens", try many resolutions, if that doesn't work, you'll have
to install a driver for you video card, you can download them on the web,
but I woudn't know where, depends on the card.

You need to install a driver for you video card, you can get it off the web, but
be specific, the driver depends on what video card you have, you probably have
an onboard one, they cause a lot of trouble.

It depends on the firewall-rules(complexity) and
the linux-box. I think a i586 should enough, probably not enough with
NAT(masquerading).
But if you wanna install proxy-servers you need performance engines for
350 clients.

I am having a strange problem dialing out: I can dial out once just
fine; after I hang up, though, I can't access the modem again until I
reboot.

 Using RedHat 6.1 & expect 5.28.1.
 Script:

 #!/usr/bin/expect -f

 system "stty -F /dev/modem 115200 -echoe -echo raw "
 spawn -open [open /dev/modem "r+"]
 send_user "Dialing..."
 <... snip modem init ...>
 send "ATe0v1x4&c1&d2s2=128s0=0dt {phone#} \r"
 set timeout 45

 expect {

catch "exec pppd /dev/modem 115200 crtscts modem defaultroute
usepeerdns debug kdebug 1 domain <x>.com user <x>" pppdval send_user
$pppdval
 #End of script

In order to terminate the ppp link I have used kill -HUP or kill -TERM
with no difference in behavior. I do not get an output value from the
last "send_user" line. I would have expected the modem to be freed
automatically upon the termination of the exect script or the pppd. I
have no idea what's happening, this being my first attempt at using
expect or Tcl -- does anybody else?

HP Plotter but the issue is really the fact the it has a Jet Direct card.
For testing purposes I am just using the "lpr -Pplotter testfile" from the
command line. I know that the Plotter and jet direct card are in fact
working because I can telnet to port 9100 and type the contents of the
testfile and the plotter prints out a nice circle. isn't that sweet? So I
have concluded that my problem lies in the printcap file or some other
config in RedHat. Here is my printcap:

plotter:\
:lp=:\
:rm=plotter:\
:rp=raw:\
:lf=/var/spool/lpd/plotter.log:\
:sd=/var/spool/lpd/plotter:

So here is the million dollar question. The printcap specifies that the
remote printer is plotter (which is resolved to 192.168.1.9 when I ping it
from redhat) but how does lpd know what port to go to?! Does the rp=raw
line tell lpd to use raw port? When I check /etc/services, there is no raw
port there. Someone please cure me of my ignorance.

Thank You

Tyler

Hmmm...
I can't comment on the benefit of getting a 'proper' aha1520. The fact
that you can manually get the module to load implies that it's not a h/w
problem so you wouldn't gain from a new card in that case.
As you have scsi_hostadaptor aliased to aha152x then doing
'/sbin/modprobe scsi_hostadaptor' will be the same as '/sbin/modprobe(or
insmod) aha152x'. From what you said before, this then loads your host
adaptor driver and the h/w is detected.

When you say it doesn't quite do what you want; what exactly do you want?
If you do '/sbin/modprobe scsi_hostadaptor' you get what you want, yes?
If you add 'post-install scsi_mod /sbin/insmod aha152x' to your
conf.modules does this not load the aha152x driver? It shouldn't be
different but does 'post-install scsi_mod /sbin/insmod scsi_hostadaptor'
(after the alias scsi_hostadaptor aha152x line) do anything different?
What about 'post-install XYZ /sbin/insmod scsi_hostadaptor'? (where XYZ
is either sg or sd or whatever scsi device driver is used for the cd
device).
