Hi! I hope one of you expertes may help me. I want to install gentus on my
new computer. I have a KA7-100 motherboard and a IBM 45 gb harddisk. The HD
is partioned into 4 partions:
c: - system 5 gb
d: -*** 15 gb
e: -*** 15 gb
f: -*** 8 gb

I have windows 98 fe installed at c:. I tried to delete f:, so that I could
get the GB`s I needed for gentus. But when I tried to make a /boot ( it was
less then 16 mb ) I got the message that it was to big. When I tried to
delete c: instead of f:, there seemed to be no problem. But this leads to
another problem. I still want to have win98 on my computer, so I can not
delete c:. Please help me. Thanks in advance!

i think your best bet is 7.1 - your hdd will run out of the box - and
there is decent usb support as well...

Is gentus a Norwegian version of Linux?

LILO is the program that boots Linux or other operating systems. Except
for the most recent LILO version, you would need a primary /boot partition
(16 MB) entirely below cylinder 1024, because LILO needs to find the
kernel below that point. The "too big" error is because LILO would not be
able to find a kernel that far out on the disk.

You need to somehow figure out how to insert a 16 MB primary partition
between partition 1 (c:) and partition 2 (extended). Unless d: and e: are
empty and could be removed, along with the extended partition, you may be
able to shrink the c: partition just enough to stuff in a 16 MB (1 cyl)
/boot partition after it. The rest of Linux can go anywhere.

The following is my /etc/fstab file, which shows which partitions I have
mounted in Linux:

/dev/hdc5 / ext2 defaults 1
1
/dev/hdc2 swap swap defaults 0

/dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy ext2 noauto 0
0
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom iso9660 user,exec,dev,suid,ro 0 0
none /proc proc defaults 0
0
none /dev/pts devpts mode=0622 0
0
/dev/sda4 /mnt/zip vfat user,exec,dev,suid,rw 1 1
/dev/scd0 /mnt/cdrom1 iso9660 user,exec,dev,suid,ro 1 1
/dev/hda1 /mnt/c vfat user,exec,dev,suid,rw 1 1
/dev/hda5 /mnt/d vfat user,exec,dev,suid,rw 1 1
/dev/hda6 /mnt/e vfat user,exec,dev,suid,rw 1 1
/dev/hdb5 /mnt/f vfat user,exec,dev,suid,rw 1 1
/dev/hdb6 /mnt/g vfat user,exec,dev,suid,rw 1 1
/dev/hdb7 /mnt/h vfat user,exec,dev,suid,rw 1 1
/dev/hdc6 /mnt/i vfat user,exec,dev,suid,rw 1 1
/dev/scd1 /mnt/cdrom2 iso9660 user,exec,dev,suid,rw 1 1

I have created directories under the /mnt directory for the C, D, E, F,
G, H, and I drives in Windows. My drives are FAT32 partitions, therefore
they are labeled "vfat" in the /etc/fstab file. Since Windows resides on
the first partition on the first drive (the C:\ drive), my Windows
directory would be found on /mnt/c, or /dev/hda1. You can make the
directories manually and edit the /etc/fstab file manually (as root), or
you can create the entries in linuxconf (again, as root) in the File
Systems section under "access local drive".

This isn't the whole story, and as I am also a newbie, I can only tell
you what I have been able to figure out myself. The above entries in
/etc/fstab do not allow write access to any of the DOS drives (unless you
are logged in as root). However, feel free to e-mail me if you have any
more questions; I may be able to help.

* Well check the outside of the modem box, make sure it can run under pure
DOS and/or Linux
* Check the website of the modem manufacturer and make sure it has a
controller chip, and can run pure DOS and/or Linux.
* Some of the local (here in Vancouver) computer companies are advertising
PCI modem as either (SW) or (HW).
Avoid SW (software) modem, and take a closer look at HW (hardware) modem.
* Have you considered external serial modems? They are usually real
modems.

** defrag should just work within the C: or D: disk - that is, hda1 or whatever.
In other words, it should not touch the master boot record. More than likely, there
is something in the geometry which is telling the dos program that the partition
extends
further than it really does and it is over writting the start of the linux partition
and
clobbering the superblok.
SO - make sure your linux kernel is below 1024 cylinders and using fdisk or cfdisk,
maybe
see that your partitions end on a cylinder boundary.

Problem No. 1- I have cable service through Intermedia@Home, Netscape
opens fine, looks good, but I can't get my settings to enable the
Netscape Messenger. In windoze, the pop server is - mail - and the
smtp is - mail -, what are they running Linux.

Problem No.2- I have a Canon BJC-240L printer that I can't seem to get
configured. Printool does not seem to work using /dev/lp1 or /dev/lp0.
I read, read, read every how-to but can't seem to make the thing go. I
have to be overlooking something simple.

You are correct, but I figured if they do not know how to set the variable
they would not know how to change their default shell.

Michael,

You may have the same problem I had with RH 6.1 and Canon BJC4100. The port
is not configured. I had to key in the following from root login.

insmod parport
insmod parport_pc io=0x378 irq=7
insmod parport_probe
insmod lp parport=0

You can just cut and past these four commands and run them from bash. Now,
when you shutdown you'll lose them, so stick them in a startupconfiguration
file if they work for you. Note that this is for the LP port, other ports
will have different io addrs and interrupts.

Subject: New Slackware install trashes HD
Date: Sun, 23 Jul 2000 17:20:56 -0400

I bought a set of Linux CDs last December and just now got around to
installing the CD for "Slackware Linux 7.0". This CD is from the Infomagic
"Developer's Resource" 6 CD set. The Slackware CD installs the 2.2.13
kernel.

I have two HDs. One 60G for Windows 2000 (primary - hda) and one 37G for
Windows 98 (slave - hdb). Both IBM drives. I decided to install Linux to
hdb. I partitioned my second drive to have approx. 27G in the first
partition for Windows 98 (hdb1), 9G in the second partition for Linux
(hdb2), and the rest for swap (hdb3, about 750M). I booted my system from
the Slackware CD and just answered the prompts. The formatting of the Linux
partitions in hdb2 and hdb3 seemed to run smoothly, as well as the system
installation itself. When rebooting, I booted back to the Windows98
partition and was surprised to see my Windows directories and files trashed
from what looks like being overwritten with the Linux installed files. I am
certain I installed to the Linux hdb2 partition and not the Windows 98
partition (hdb1).

I'm just now getting back into Linux after a few years absence in using MS
systems exclusively. Something like this happening has really put me off in
allowing Linux a second chance.

Doh!
Yes there is.
'...or' is my mis-spelling and '...er' is the correct spelling!
That was actually the problem with my conf.modules. I'd got the alias
name wrong ... 8-)
(on my way to sit facing the corner ....)

Guy

I'm afraid I can't offer any more help on what your problem may be.
I don't think a new card would be an improvement as it smells of a
config issue, why you can load it manually but it doesn't get loaded
automatically I'm not sure. The only thing that comes to mind is maybe a
dependency isn't quite set up i.e. when it loads the scsi driver (e.g.
sg or sd) it appears to know to load scsi_mod but not then aha152x.
Double check for any typos in conf.modules (like was in mine). Then
maybe recompile the kernel so you *know* the required dependencies are
there.
Actually first off (if you haven't already) have a flick through the
scsi howto and see if anything comes to light (
http://www.ict.pwr.wroc.pl/doc/Linux-HOWTO/SCSI-HOWTO.html ).

Good luck.

Subject: newbie: Caldera won't install from ATAPI CDR
Date: Sun, 23 Jul 2000 14:47:09 -0700

Greeting Linux Gurus.

I've taken the plunge and decided to go Linux. My previous system
(Win95)
died recently (flaky motherboard) and I decided that as long as I was
building a new system anyway, I might as well take the plunge and learn
the OS of the future.

My problem is this: The Caldera install Lizard seems to be missing my
ATAPI CDROM during it's autodetect phase, and is therefore not seeing
any devices to install from (I'm booting from the CDROM, using the
Caldera OpenLinux 2.4 install CD). I don't have windows or any other
OS on the system (just bought a new board/CPU/HD, everything and
put it together).

Clearly the CD exists and is working, because it's booting, loading the
kernel
and runing the autodetect prog fine...but the autodetect isn't seeing
the CD.

Unfortunately, I'm not at my home system, so I'll have to give you my
best recollection of the details:

ASUS Apollo mother board (new, but I can't remember the model)
Pentium III 500 CPU
128 MB ram
20 GB IBM HD (master on IDE channel 1)
4 GB Western Digital HD (master on IDE channel 2)

Pioneer 24x CDROM (oldish, but worked fine in my old system) set as
slave on IDE2
/* ^^^^^ This is the device I'm booting from on install, but I get the
same problem
when I boot from the floppy */

Voodoo3 AGP 16MB video card /* I initially thought this might be the
problem and switched it out for an old S3 PCI card, to no avail */

a USR 56k modem that I know probably won't work but shouldn't be causing

a problem at install. /* If I can't get it to work, I've got a new
modem still
in the shrink wrap that I can put in...but I might need help with that
too */

Any and all help is greatly appreciated...I need to get this system up
and
running as quickly as possible...I've got some looming deadlines...I can

fool around tweeking it to make it perfect later.

Cheers
