Maybe you corrupted the windows partition by the use of a bad lilo.conf?
Does the file /boot/boot.0301 exist?
If so you can more easily restore the damage.
(ls -l /boot/boot.*)

??
You get LILO, and then you choose win98.
Then you again get LI ?
If so, boot.0301 will exist.

This may also mean that you installed LILO on the wrong place during
your attempts to boot linux.

Have you tried mouseconfig?

If you have a ps/2 mouse the device you need is /dev/psaux

If you have a usb mouse then it is /dev/usbmouse and special setup
routines which I don't know (I don't use usb). Search google for relevant
info.

If you have a serial mouse the device you need is /dev/ttyS* (where * is
the port number, typically 0).

As for X the file to edit if mouseconfig fails is /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
Look for a /dev/mouse or such since /dev/ttyS* is linked to /dev/mouse
for easy reference in most dists.

If mouseconfig doesn't work post with more info.

Mine didn't even compile outside of the chrooted environment.
How would you create that symlink? ln -s ed vi -e?

Remember that /etc/fstab contains an entry like this:
/dev/hdb1 / ext2 defaults 0 0
If you move the drive to master, it becomes /dev/hda instead of /dev/hdb.

The correct procedure (I had to do this) is, after moving the disk to
primary master, edit the following files: (after mounting your root
somewhere, of course)
/etc/fstab
/etc/lilo.conf (Change the root=/dev/xxx) to the new root partition
chroot to your root partition ^^^^^^
/sbin/lilo
reboot.

This should fix your problem. Note if you don't have a boot disk, the
distro's installation disk should be able to boot you to a tty. Press
<Alt><F2/F3/etc> until you get a tty, then run the above.

well, that's always dangerous.
Warnings have a reason.

> Later My machine was unable boot.My
> question is if linux knows it can't boot over 1024 how the same was not

It doesn't know. (besides, it was lilo warning you) it guesses.
Some PC's can boot, others cannot. It depends on your system.
If it's new enough, it will support booting from beyond cylinder 1024 most
likely

If you use a bootfloppy it can always be booted, anywhere.
If you replace the linear keyword in lilo.conf with lba32, and run
`/sbin/lilo -v`
again, it will probably boot just fine.

try at the lilo prompt:

linux root=/dev/hdaXX

where hdaXX is your root partition.
Some parts may still fail, and you need to alter fstab and lilo.conf, but
you will get a (partly) working system from which you can restore the rest.

I am working with a hp-kayak-XAs. I upgrated my kernel version from
2.2.14 to the new 2.4.4.
Now, the system does not recognize my sound card but it did from last
image (2.2.14). I keep my /etc/conf.modules but it doesn't work !! My
sound card is integrated to the motherboard, so I connected to the hp
web page to find which one is it. I think I have a 02xx serie which work
with AD1816 audio controller but honestly I am not sure. I try identify
the chipset of my sound card in the motherboard but I coudn't find it !!

Then, in the kernel options, in the sound section, I selected my sound
card as a loadable module and other options which were selected in the
old kernel image (2.2.14) but it does not work !!!!
I try sndconfig script but it does not work ! That's the message:

I'm having a strange problem in Mandrake 7.2...

I have a SB AWE 64 card, but I'm not getting any sound; nothing about sound

artsd is disabled, says "cannot find /dev/(sound card device name)"

"sndconfig" apparently does not exist, and there is no loadable package (as
far as I can tell) that will address the situation.

The sound card works fine in Windows98...

 Thanks in advance.

First, don't just edit the crontabs! do a crontab -e.
Second, you must specify the FULL path to your commands/scripts.

Hardware: Toshiba Satalite Pro 440 CDT.
While it had W'95 running, it booted from floppy if a bootable one was
in the drive.

Now Suse 6.1 is installed, it boots straight from HD, no booting from
floppy anymore: Not after shutdown, not after reboot and, most strange,
not after hardware reset.

Question one: How do I boot from floppy? I have /dev/fd0 added to lilo
to force a floppy boot but I'd like to boot straight from floppy.

Question two: How is this arranged? How can I controll this behavoure?
Is something twiggeling with the bios settings? I'm sure I did not
change the boot order. It would be nice to access the bios settings from
linux since there is no boot option to enter the bios at boottime.

Okay, here's the deal...

I've just installed RedHat 7.0 with kernel 2.2.16-22 I think it is.
I've downloaded the source for 2.4.4 and managed to compile it, doing
the following:
    make xconfig
    make dep
    make bzImage
    make modules
    make modules_install
and all that went okay.
I copied the kernel from arch/i386/boot/bzImage to /boot
I edited my lilo.conf file and inserted it into the existing file as
follows:
image=/boot/bzImage
    label=test
    read-only
root=/dev/hdc1 (linux is on my second disk which is also on my
secondary IDE controller...hence hdc1...I don't have a seperate /boot
partition, it's whole disk with swap at the end of the disk)
...and then I ran lilo.....everything okay so far.

I booted, and as expected the test option came up as one of the os's I
could boot. I ran "test" and the kernel started to boot. Heaps of text
came on my screen as you would expect from the kernel. However, not
long after this, I got this message which kept looping and looping
rather rapidly on my screen:

kmod: failed to exec /sbin/modprobe -s -k binfmt-464c, errno=8

Any idea what this means? How can I fix it? Is there some sort of
package I need to update?
If it helps, I can tell you that I installed the standard redhat 7.0
workstations installation...I didn't de-select or install any packages
in the package configuration.

Anyway, any help in this area would be much appreciated as I'm a little
new to the linux kernel and how to use GNU/Linux.

Thanks!!!!!!

Andy Gray
