It is just a standard ASUS TNT2, using reference board design.
I heard that it's the compatibility problem of P!!! and VIA694X motherboard.
It is solved in kernel 2.3 while current distributions are using 2.2 only. I
want to use RedHat because I am a rookie to Linux.
Anyway to overcome this? Since I can't even bootup. I can do nothing...
Thanks!

I have since found out you can hold down the Alt key and click
and drag a window in KDE and GNOME. I used it to license
Netscape. Then you can fool around with the resize in the
window's lower right corner. Now I'm looking into setting up a
virtual 800x600 or so desktop.

Yes. It is a standard VGA and only runs 640x350, 640x480, and
720x400. So 640x480 is the only practical option. In
Xconfigurator the only monitor and video card settings that work
are unsupported VGA card and generic 640x480 60 Hz monitor. Not
even generic VGA card will work.

Did you try Xconfigurator? I had much better luck with it than
XF86Setup. I got X set up fairly quickly using it - compared to
using XF86Setup - but I'd not like to play with it again. I very
carefully saved a copy of the working XF86Config data file and
printed it out.

How do I set up a virtual screen/display/desktop (or whatever
the correct term is) for Gnome and/or KDE with Mandrake 7.0?
I have only 640x480 and understand I can make this work like a
800x600, getting the extra screen area by moving the mouse to
the edges of the display.
TIA.

I don't know about Linux NFS, but many other Unix'es consider a
filesystem that is exported/shared to be busy and make you
unexport/unshare it first.

Hi,
Using a program called SAMBA. Samba let's you connect to a
"Windows" netowrk with your Unix machine. You run client for
Microsoft NEtworks on all of your windows machines, the run
"smbd" on your Mandrake machine and voila! - you can see each other's

Hello, Experts.
I just tried to install Linux.
In the part of partition, I got the error
message like the below.
"There are currently unallocated partition
(s) present in the list of requested
: partitions. The unallocated partition
(s) are shown below, along with the
: reason they were not allocated
: <swap partition> No free primary"
If anyone know how can it be fixed, please
give a hand.
I tried several way to changed partition
size at linux setup but it shows me the
same problem..
My condition is as the below.
I have 128M memory & 20G HDD
At the first, my 20G HDD was partitioned
as 10G for C:(win98se), 6G(format for
win), 2G(fortmat for win), 2G(tried for
linux install) -> Then I had problem with
1024Cylinder.. So, I partitioned 10G
(originally Win98se installed) to 8G
(win98se)+ 2G(tried for linux) -> Then
same problem with 1024 Cylinder -> so, I
partitioned again with 8G(win 98se) to 6G
(win98se)+2G(tried for linux) -> Then I
got error message as I mentioned at the
first.
My hard drive condition is right now, with
Primary {6G(C:win 98se installed), 2G(F:),
2G(G:)} and Extended {6G(D:), 4G(E:)}.
I had hard time with several effort to
install Linux on my system with Win98.. it
so difficult to do it.
Please advice me to good partition on 20G
and detailed partition for linux(swap,
root, usr, etc.).
Thanks for reading the above question and
good advice.
Have nice day~~

I'd highly recommend biting the bullet and making a new kernel from
scratch. That way, you avoid bugs from older kernels, but just as
importantly, things will run better for you.
I always dismissed the idea that a kernel with unnecessary features would
significantly slow down your machine, I generally just compiled them to get
the extra features that I wanted. One day I did some informal testing
between a "stock" kernel that came with RH 6.2, and one that I compiled
myself. Just in FTP, I did a full megaBYTE per second more under the one I
compiled than under the stock one - it really opened up my eyes.

I have had similar symptoms sometimes.
In my case there has been couple of reasons.
1. I had to symbolic links named X in different directories
that pointed to different X-servers. xdm (that started my X-login)
used wrong one because some configuration file told it to do so.
startx used link found in PATH that was the correct one.
(e.g. /etc/X11/X and /usr/X11R6/bin/X)
use
% find / -type l -name "X"
to find those links
% ls -l found_path
to check if they point to same files
% ln -s found_incorrect_path correct_path
to fix the incorrect link
2. I had saved a XF86Config file with some configuration application
to my home directory and then copied it to /etc/X11 directory. Then
later I corrupted the default configuration file in /etc/X11. So startx
used my original configuration from home directory and xdm used the
corrupted one.
use
% cp XF86Config /etc/X11
to fix incorrect configuration file
General hints:
During fixing you probably need to have root priviledges so use
% su
When working as root be careful and if in doubt how to use a command use
% man doubtful_command
spelling errors or other mistakes as root may cause you not to
be able run X from startx or worse.

This could be set in the XF86Config-file (manually), but a more
user-friendly way is by using xf86config. At a certain point it'll as
'Do you want to use Virtual Desktop', so you just say 'y'.

[Error defining the SWAP-space, could be due to the

I don't know how to solve your problem directly, but normally (when you
install Linux) you can select 'Use linear mode' to handle the
1024-cilinder-problem.
Also, make sure you give the SWAP-partition a REAL PARTITION (I didn't
saw one in your posting).
Here what you could do for partitioning:
2.1 Gb FAT32 Windows System
5.9 Gb FAT32 Windows Programs
2.0 Gb FAT32 User Space
0.256 Gb <SWAP> SWAP-partition, selected during installation
2.0 Gb EXT2 Linux: /
3.0 Gb EXT2 Linux: /home
4.744 Gb EXT2 Linux: /usr
Or (even better):
2.1 Gb FAT32 Windows System
5.9 Gb FAT32 Windows Programs
2.0 Gb FAT32 User Space
0.256 Gb <SWAP> SWAP-partition, selected during installation
1.5 Gb EXT2 Linux: /
2.5 Gb EXT2 Linux: /home
0.100 Gb EXT2 Linux: /boot
1.2 Gb EXT2 Linux: /var
4.444 Gb EXT2 Linux: /usr
But take care, partitioning should be thought over! Do you plan to use
lots of kernels (and keep a lot of kernel-backups)? Do you plan on
installing lots of programs? What will you save in you home-directorie?
Do you want to log a lot of things? ...
If you want a good way of partitioning, read LAME (Linux Administrating
Made Easy) or SAG (System Administrators Guide). Both are very good in
handling such questions...

You can use ipchains and ipforward with kernel 2.2.x. There are at
least two web sites with some scripts to create a firewall/forward from
lan according to your configuration. One of them is:
http://packetfilter.dynip.com/. Then you can copy the script on your
hard drive (in /etc for exemple). My ISP uses ppp (over ethernet for
ADSL) and therefore, instead of calling my firewall script in my
rc.local (boot time), I added the call in /etc/ppp/if-ip.local (this
file exists in RedHat 6.2). This way, the firewall/ipforward is started
only when I am connected.
