I have managed to fix the problem.
I believe bios was not detecting my hard disk.
I fixed the problem by adding the following line to lilo.conf:
linear
I then typed:
/sbin/lilo
Finally I rebooted the computer and celebrated :)

Subject: I want Linux, but partitioning is becoming a pain...
Date: Mon, 24 Jul 2000 18:11:01 +0200
Hi,
i have a win98 partition (10GB) and a linux partition (4GB), but when i
set the linux partition to "active" in PartitionMagic and reboot, my
computer says: "missing operating system. Powerquest has been no help,
so i hope you can help me.
below is my most recent correspondence with powerquest support, where
they suggested i delete my old win98 "Extended" partition using the
pqmagic /ipe command to bypass the error message (#108):
Please help.
---
your suggestion to use PQMAGIC /IPE to "get in" worked.
I then deleted the ExtendedX partition (my win98 D:-drive). I then
installed Corel
Linux to "free disk space" (which it listed as 4GB, which is the size of
the partition you told me to delete). It then "formatted" the partition
and installed itself without any error messages.
Unfortunately, when i rebooted at the end of the installation, it said
"missing
operating system", even though I had defined the Linux partition as
"aktive partition". It seems that there is still something wrong with
the patitions on my hard drive.
Do i have to repartition my win32 partition (i'd rather not, since it
has MANY
installed/configured programs - 10GB)? Would that even do the job?
What should i do?
Here is the NEW printout from "partinfo.exe":

Just try a lot of settings (eg MultiSync Monitor, low resolution so you
can eliminate the possibility of a not-functioning-agp-card-under-linux,
...) Just play. It'll come out sooner or later.

Could be the 1024-cilinder-problem. If possible, make sure that the
/boot-partition is beneath the 1024-cilinder-limit (i.e. about 8.2Gb).

Corel has a repeating ioerror scrolling on the screen on boot-up (I
would say its a boot disk problem, but I am unable to check as I don't
know how to do this on linux yet)
Redhat (which I have had working on my good PC) goes through the
formatting stage and starts to download the files but stops there, and
if I can remember right, has a "not enough disk space" error
what setup can you recomend
I have tried
hda all 500 Mb "/". hdb "/usr"(400 Mb) & SWAP (100 Mb)
hda all 500 Mb "/". hdb "/usr/local"(400 Mb) & SWAP (100 Mb)
plus several other combinations all to no avail.

I've got an HP Kayak XA system that I just converted from NT to Linux
(RedHat 6.2). The system stays up if I stay in the standard terminal
mode that you get when you log in. However, if I go into X-windows
then the system will freeze (won't respond to pings, etc.) after a
short period of time (10 - 120 seconds). This happens *every* time.
While I can do much of my work without X-windows, I'd love to have it
running. Can anyone point me in the right direction for what to look
for? The test patterns for Xconfigurator worked fine during the
install (found the video card and I set the monitor to the correct
name) and also when I ran it separately afterward.
Thanks in advance.

mkbootdisk $(uname -r)
is the same as the following two:
uname -r # gets the kernel version. supposing 2.2.14

How do I get the source ver.(www.apache.org) of apache to autostart on
boot-up on RHL6.2?

Thank you very much, David.
What is the difference between Emergency Boot Disk and Rescue Disk?
I have made "Rescue Disk" according to your instruction.
But I can't mount the disk I have just made. When I run:
mount /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy
I get an error message:
mount: you must specify the filesystem type
But when I try to specify some filesystem type, it shows me that it was
wrong type.
What is the right filesystem type?
You know I have to edit the lilo.conf file in the floppy disk to add one
line below, or it can't recognize my hard disk.
append=" ide2=0xac00,0xb002,11 ide3=0xb800,0xbc02,11"

I was wondering (I asked in comp.os.linux.hardware, but no luck so far)
about a LAN (Ethernet) card I got with my new computer: Windows reports
it as GFC2206... Anyone has any ideas about Linux? I have Suse 6.4 and
it does not see it by default. Is it compatible with something else?
Any setup tips? If not I just get a 3com or Intel...
Thanks for any help.

You want to start Apache each time you boot up, right? You need to do
'ntsysv' and select httpd. That will make the daemon start when Linux boots?

Does Red Hat 6.2 recognize this network adaptor? I tried Red Hat 6.0 and it
doesn't work. Thanks,

Subject: Download rate diminishes

Any idea why when I download a file or surf the internet, the download rate
just goes keeps on diminishing until the modem "stalls"? I use an Optiflex
Speedcom 2000 56k modem and I get the following information when I use the
command setserial:
setserial /dev/ttyS0 -a
/dev/ttyS0, Line 0, UART: 16550A, Port: 0x03f8. IRQ: 4
Baud_base: 115200, close_delay: 50, divisor: 0
closing_wait: 3000, closing_wait2: infinte
Flages: spd_normal skip_test
I also found from a linux newbie website that you can speed tweak a modem by
changing parameters in the options file found in /etc/options. So I set the
MTU(Maximum Transmission Unit) to 1250 and the MRU(Maximum Recieve Unit) to
1500. I still haven't noticed any change however. What do I need to setup?
