Help, I restarted Linux today and it won't boot up. The error message is
"Loading Linux. EBDA Too Big"
I installed a few updates yesterday and a few new rpm's but havn't tried
restarting the computer since then.
Any help getting linux to start would be appreciated.

Questions about GRUB (somewhat O/T, but this seems as good a group as any):
1) Is it possible to boot a CD from the GRUB menu (cd0, maybe?)
2) How exactly does it work? I understand that STAGE1 is in the MBR
(and thus limited to 512 bytes) and STAGE2 runs from a recognized,
working partition, so it can be as big as it wants to be. But
where does STAGE1_5 run from? Doesn't it run at a point before a
partition is known? Doesn't this make it dependent on hard
sector numbers (as is LILO) ?

Subject: I get an error when loading SSL with Apache web server!
Date: Tue, 15 May 2001 17:32:28 -0400
Hi, I'm trying to get Apache working on RedHat 6.1 using both HTTP and
HTTPS, but so far all I can get is HTTP.
I downloaded and installed: open_ssl, mod_ssl and mm and installed them,
but when I run: /etc/httpd/bin/apachectl startssl I get errors when
loading 2 of the modules.
The 2 lines in /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf that give me errors are:
LoadModule rewrite_module modules/mod_rewrite.so
LoadModule db_auth_module modules/mod_auth_dbm.so
The error I get when I run Apache with the 'startssl' option is:
"Syntax error on line 153 of /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf: Cannot load
/etc/httpd/modules/mod_rewrite.so: undefines symbol: dbm_fetch
/etc/httpd/bin/apachectl startssl: httpd could not be started."
Can anyone please help me to figure out what's wrong here?
I followed all the instructions to the letter when I compiled and installed
these packages.
Thanks,
Chris Just

Does your Linux distribution do this?:
After a day or two of non use, I power up the computer, 5 minutes
later slocate is run [via anacron], good. It is 3:47 AM.
At 4:02 AM cron runs slocate again.
There ought to be a check in these cron scripts: if the slocate
database is newer than 12 (18?) hours, skip this run. I'm curious
which Linux distributions have been so thoughtful.
I used Mandrake 7.2.

Please remove the mime encoding in your browser.
Notice what you had to read through to see your question.
You can also drop the card.
add
. /etc/rc.d/init.d/functions
to top of myscript.
then add
action "What you want here" /bin/true
where ever you want in your script.
then run the start/stop/.... test again

I'd rather forgo the extra $50 and get an internal ISA modem. They are rarely
winmodems.
However things have probably changed since I bought my last U.S.Robotics
sportster in '98. Nowadays I use a cable modem and get up to 600 KB (bytes, not
bits) / second.
Unfortuneately, there's talk about download caps. Having the 128kb/s cap sucks.

Some common causes for the "Delaying Eth0 Initialisation" error message:
* The wrong module is loaded. Check the file /etc/modules.conf, it
should contain a line like fi
alias eth0 ne2k-pci
if you have a NE200 compatible PCI network adapter. Replace the
ne2k-pci with the module required by your card.
* Some modules need special options to be passed to the module for it to
function, most notoriously IRQ and io addresses. This is done with the
file /etc/modules.conf as well.
alias eth0 3c509
options 3c509 io=0x300 irq=10
If that's what your module requires, that information can quite often
be obtained from the files /proc/pci /proc/interrupts /proc/ioports.

Use /etc/modules.conf instead, from the man page "man 5 modules.conf"
ALTERNATIVE CONFIGURATION FILE
For historical reasons, if /etc/modules.conf does not
exist, modutils will read /etc/conf.modules instead.
However the use of this historical name is deprecated and
it should be replaced with /etc/modules.conf. This
version of modutils issues a warning message if
/etc/conf.modules exists, later versions will give an
error message and refuse to load modules.
Second you should compile your own kernels, just like like the RedHat
stock ones with the kernel module loader (CONFIG_KMOD=y) which loads
modules as needed, so there is no need to force the loading of modules
manually by adding insmod lines to rc.local or other files. Special
settings for modules, aliases and such are obtained from the file
/etc/modules.conf.

I don't know much about Linuxconf, but you don't have to make the
symlinks yourself. Just have a line near the top of your script like
this:
# chkconfig: 345 86 85
and then do 'chkconfig reset' and it will create symlinks for each
runlevel you choose (3, 4, and 5 in this example) with names K85myscript
and S86myscript. And, by the way, it's usual to have S and K numbers that
add up to 99 or thereabouts so that the first ones started are the last
ones killed, and vice versa.
It might be that Linuxconf relies on the chkconfig line being present.

I think the suspend function on most laptops is dependent on the
hardware. For me, a large assortment of kernels, all compiled with APM
support, worked with a Thinkpad 380D and a Thinkpad 600X. The command
is "apm -s", but most laptops automagically invoke suspend-to-RAM when
the lid is closed.
Thinkpads have a number of options as to what they do when an APM
suspend event occurs; "tpctl" can control them. Finally, if you give
more information about your hardware, someone will probably be able to
help you out more.

If you look at the stuff in the 3c509.c file, you'll see that the only
parameter the 3c509 module takes is an irq= parameter. io= is not a
valid parameter for 3c509, as the error message tells you.
If the IRQ assignments for the devices stay stable, or you can fix them
using 3C5X9CFG.EXE, then passing the irq= options to modprobe in the
correct order should allow you to control which device becomes eth1 and
which becomes eth0.
