Where can I get a copy of maxdisk? I would really like to play with
this software.

You need the Glibc DES-crypt add-on library, I think. In Slackware-7
this is called "descrypt"; the actual file is libcrypt-2.1.3.so.
Once you have this file installed, you can edit /etc/login.defs and
change MD5_CRYPT_ENAB to no. Then all new or changed passwords will
use the old-style crypt(). There is nothing you can do about passwords
which are already in there with MD5 encoding - no automatic way to convert
them. Note that with this library installed, both MD5 and old-crypt()
passwords will work for login, so it should be safe.

Subject: SuSe Linux Installation Problem
Date: Mon, 24 Jul 2000 19:42:56 -0500

Having finally decided to take a Linux plunge (after 15 years away from
Unix), I picked up a $29 copy of SuSe Linux thinking I would put it on an
extra PC that's just laying around.

The PC is a P-III 200, 6GB HD, 64MB memory, 2MB STB video. The HD has had
2 partitions -- a 2GB FAT16 and a 4GB NTFS. First, I'm having a tough time
getting rid of the existing partitions. MS-DOS 6.22 FDISK won't do it
(can't delete partition while logical drive active, but can't see a logical
drive). I don't own Partition Magic or anything like it.

Anyway, when I try to boot to install, it runs some kind of script that
finally terminates with a kernel panic and says something about not being
able to mount the root filesystem.

Any suggestions? TIA..

David

Fips will only work on FAT16 or FAT32, but you could take a look at
pdisk.exe, which is a stand alone program included with Bootit Direct
found here:

http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/BOOTITD.HTM

I've never tried it on NTFS, but it is supposed to be able to shrink
NTFS partitions.

You won't need a defragger if you use pdisk, but Diskeeper Lite is a
well known one for NT, and it's freeware:

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I cant get linux to boot any way I try. I installed red hat from cd onto
the second partition on my one HD just after the windoze partition
(fat16). Although I setup lilo during the install (5 times) it just
doesn't work. I never get the lilo: prompt.
Failing this I used loadlin to avoid the problem. However, the boot gets
to "kernel panic :vfd unable to mount....". I'm certain that I have
loadin pointing to the right partition (hda2) since I took notice of
this during the last 3 time I installed. I'm using the vmlinuz kernel
image off the cd since I have no other.

Please someone help a linux newbie with this problem, I't REALLY driving
me to distraction. I'm new to this so please use small words :)

THANKYOU!
I ran the above commands and my beloved Windows 95 is now back again. It
looks as though I'll need to do a lot more reading on LILO and Linux in
general to understand the system. On first appearance it certainly isn't
user friendly, but I'm going to persevere some more and hopefully understand
why so many people believe Linux is a Good OS.

Cheers,
Ken

Subject: ps2 mouse problem with portege 7020 running win98
Date: Tue, 25 Jul 2000 01:00:49 +0000

I have a Toshiba laptop Portege 7020 that initially came with Windows NT
operating system. Since then I have installed commercial version of
Windows 98 SE in order to get USB and IR ports working. But through
this process, PS2 mouse stopped working. This is when the BIOS is set
to "simultaneous" which is suppose to allow both PS2 and "accu-point" on
my laptop to work at the same time. Setting the BIOS to "auto detect"
will make PS2 mouse work, but of course the "accu-point mouse" on my laptop
is disabled in that mode.

I have downloaded all that is available on Toshiba website (to my best
knowledge), and Toshiba tech support was not able to help me.

PS2 and accu-point mouse worked together just fine in NT. And in my
dual boot setup, Linux mode also works fine.

Q1: Anyone have any idea how I can fix this problem?

Q2: Anyone know if the commercial version of Windows 2000 would fix this?

I would appreciate anyone's help/pointers regarding this.

Regards,
Un-Ku Moon

Ok after you

copied the "bzImage" to /boot/vmlinuz-2.2.14-1mdklinus did you delete
the symlink and then make a new one?

rm -f /boot/vmlinuz
ln -fs /boot/vmlinux-2.2.14-1mdklinus /boot/vmlinuz

Or did you just leave the old symlink in place?

Date: Mon, 24 Jul 2000 20:24:04 -0500

I cannot get any flavor of Linux to boot. Ive tried Mandrake, Slackware, and Redhat.
What's wierd is, I could when I was first setting up the machine.
What I have is:
PIII 500 (coppermine)
Gigabyte VIA Apollo MoBo
126K mem
Voodoo 3
Sb Live!
Linksys 10/100
Symbios Logic SCSI card

On boot up, it hangs with:
checking 386/387 coupling :<3> error: trying to reset 386/387
trying to reset 386/387 coupling..

and it scrolls the last line into infinity, forcing me to hit the power button to
reset.

Did I change a bios setting? Could it be an IRQ thing? WHat?
Anybody got any ideas?
I loaded Linux before I put in any of the extras, sound card, etc. and it worked. But
after putting in all cards it wouldn't.
I tried taking out one card at a time and it did the above 396/387 coupling thing
every time.

It is. But in case of lilo, the prompt appears BEFORE any OS is called so the
lilo.conf cannot be read by the active booter. You have to order it to read and
memorise the script. Many times this little item is not explained.
Have fun...

Subject: Help with using X-Win32 to run Linux X Server from windows client
Date: 25 Jul 2000 03:11:03 GMT

Hello everyone,
First of all, let me say that I am relatively new to Linux. My background comes
from Windows NT environment. I have been using Linux (RH 6.1) for about 6 months
and I really like a lot. Linux is much more stable and perform much better than
Microsoft windows. In the past 6 months, I have learned a few things about Linux
and I am falling in love with it.

At the moment, I am setting a Linux box running on a PIII 600Mhz with 256 MB of
RAM. X-windows is working fine (I can start x from the command line or set it
to level-5 with linuxconf). I even know how to install and configure SSH and get
it to work when I am at a windows client (by the way, I am using Secure CRT running
on Microsoft windows). Furthermore, I am using StarOffice 5.1 on the Linux box.
Everytime I want to use StarOffice, I have to go to StarOffice directory and
mannually start it there (if anybody know how to do it automatically from X, please
let me know).

Here is my problem. I am trying to convince my boss and a few people in the office
to use linux. We have no problem telnet to the Linux box; however my goal is to
allow these people to use X-window application from their win98/NT machines. The
X-window client application I am using right now is X-win32. I do NOT have any clues
on how to set up these things. What do I need to do on both the Linux machine and
Win98/NT machine? If anybody has done this before, please help me. Let me know
what needs to be done at both end (i.e. Linux server and win98/NT). Also, please make
your instructions a precise as possible (remember you are dealing with a new
Linux user here [me]). Bottom line, PLEASE HELP.

You can send me email at [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Thanks.

Many of the partitions on my hard drive are quite full at the moment,
though I have a lot of unpartitioned space at the end of the drive.
Is there a way to 'widen' the existing partitions so they take up more
space?
I know I can mount further subdirectories like '/var/log' and so on to
save space, but I'd prefer not to do this as I don't to have a horribly
complicated partition table.
Also, is there any good documentation for fdisk available?
Thanks,

Hey
To see a graphical of a Linux box on a Win box, follow this link
http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/index.html

To prevent yourself from cd-ing to the staroffice directory, simply add it
to your path:

from your shell:
# PATH=$PATH:/path/to/staroffice/bin
# export PATH (or export $PATH??)

If you don;t want to do that everty time, simply modify your ~/.bashrc file
If nowhere it talks about PATH in your ~/.bashrc file, add it:
export PATH=$PATH:/path/to/staroffice/bin

Ola,

don't panic... you did not loose your system!!
Once you followed the advise of the preceeding dude, simply modify your
lilo.conf file

THE BEST WAY TO DO IT:
run this command:
# linuxconf
(# is your prompt)

You will be able to see some boot options. Say you want to add another OS.
Point to /dev/hdaX (where /dev/hdaX is the partition containing W2K), save
and run and reboot!
