Did you try "linux root=/dev/hda2" from any of these bootoptions (The CD
eg.)
Does `/sbin/lilo -v -v`give any warnings?
Is there something weird with your partitiontable? `/sbin/fdisk -l /dev/hda`

Sometimes when I start my linux system (redhat 7.0) during the
interactive startup it says:

/ has reached maximal mount count, check forced

can someone tell me why this happens

and also a couple of minutes after x completes loading after logging in
the hard drive goes crazy doing 'something' and everything else stops
(im guessing due to lack of resources)

whats going on??

Thanks in advance

man isapnp
man isapnp.conf
man pnpdump

pnpdump to a temp file, edit it by hand, copy that to /etc/isapnp.conf.
modprobe in the desired modules. confirm that they both work, edit
modules.conf to auto load the drivers, RELAX! don't pop a vein ;-)

Subject: Strange X-crash
Date: Wed, 16 May 2001 09:10:31 +0200

Hi folks,

I'm using XFree86 4.0.3 on a Linux 2.4.4 system with an ATi-mach64 graphics
board. Until now, I never had any problems, however, quite recently a
strange behavior started to occur:

*Most of the time* X runs fine, even for several hours. However, randomly
during normal operating, X crashes. This has happened both while I was
using StarOffice and KMail - I think, however, that the crash doesn't
really have anything to do with these apps.

HOWEVER, to make things even stranger, after the crash, when I try to
restart X by typing "startx", X doesn't start and instead gives me a whole
lot of error messages looking like that:

(II) Loading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/libxaa.a
Symbol XAAScreenIndex from module /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/libxaa.a is
unresolved!
Symbol XAAGCIndex from module /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/libxaa.a is unresolved!
Symbol XAAPixmapIndex from module /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/libxaa.a is
unresolved!
Symbol XAAGCIndex from module /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/libxaa.a is unresolved!
Symbol XAAPixmapIndex from module /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/libxaa.a is
unresolved!
Symbol XAAScreenIndex from module /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/libxaa.a is
unresolved!
Symbol XAAInitAccel from module /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/libxaa.a is
unresolved!
Symbol XAAPaintWindow from module /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/libxaa.a is
unresolved!

Nothing except for rebooting and trying again seems to solve this problem.

A file containing all the screen-output I get when trying to start X after
it crashed can be found at
http://www.nightcastleproductions.org/misc/error.out

Any help is appreciated!

Nils

maximum count is what it says. The file systems are
checked for errors after a set number of mounts.

The number of mounts before checking can be configured
-SOMEWHERE-, I don't where.

I suspect the hard drive activity ( I get it too) is
probably "cron" doing its housekeeping, rotating logs and stuff.

Have a look in /etc/cron.*

Please post the line for the CD-ROM drive from your "/etc/fstab" file.

Or, just check it. I would guess that "exec" is not included in the

I had the same type of problem with 2 network cards. I had one that I
wanted to use for my internal network and one for going out to a cable
modem. They are both PCI but one always loaded first when I set up the
machine no matter which slot I put it in. The way I got aroung it was to use Linuxconf
and simply
reassigne the first card from eth0 to eth1 and then the next one eth1 to eth0. When I
rebooted the machine that is the way it stayed.

Hi,

if I am not wrong, the Rage pro (for example, my Ati xpert@play 98) is
supported under XFree 4.0.3 with 2D acceleration but not with 3D
acceleration (DRI): is that right?
The question is: will 3D acceleration be supported under future releases
of XFree? Is it possible to know when?

At the dri site (at sourceforge) they state that they don't give any info
about development status and expected future releases... :-((

There is no "mime encoding" in his message. It is a multipart message with different
MIME types because he added the card. If you are
going to appoint yourself the news group police then you should first learn enough to
know what you are talking about.

MIME encoding is a method of sending 8 bit data as 7 bit data. What you complained
about in his message had nothing to do with that.

All he needs to do is drop the card. He should probably set it to 8 bit and change to
plain text but that wouldn't make the junk go
away if he still attached the v-card.

This is sent as plain text and 8 bit but with a v-card!!!!
