I am guessing you removed windows entirely. First, what type of mouse is
it? I am guessing a serial since the computer is old. In which case
there are two options com1 or com2, most likely com1. As for the irq,
linux should take care of that itself - its just a mouse.

As for the modem see if my guide helps:

Wouldn't have thought so - I've never had any problems with ATA-66. The
'L' part of the LILO message is printed before it tries to locate the
second stage boot loader (look in /usr/share/doc/lilo-...) Which
normally means the disk geometry is screwed.

If it's a large disk (which it will be if it's less than a few years
old!) then make sure you have either 'lba32' or 'linear' mode enabled
in the lilo.conf file. AFAIK Redhat doesn't support 'lba32' so just
make sure the line 'linear' appears in the top of the /etc/lilo.conf
file, if not - add it, rerun '/sbin/lilo' and see if that fixes your
problems.

Of course, if you already have 'linear' mode there, none of this helps :-)

ATB,
        Simon.

After searching through debian bug report logs and found out that the
problem was a plug in netscape didn't like (the real video plugin I
think.)

bug #79240 http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=79240&repeatmerged=yes
says:
This is almost always caused by having plugins linked against the libc
that the netscape binary was not.

I'd previously installed netscape and the plugin by hand without a
problem. Apparently the version of netscape in debian uses a different
libc.

Thanks for looking into this for me.

BTW, what are the disadvantages of using dselect instaed of apt-get?

Seasons Greetings!

I have post an identical thread sometime ago. But for some reasons it just
didn't show up on my PC and get responds. So I am posting it again. If you
have read this post somewhere on the earth, probably kindly replied, thanks
for your time! I will appreciate if you can help me again.

Things go strange on Redhat. Since I upgrade this machine, I can't use the
KDE environment anymore on Redhat, from V6.1 up to V7.0. If I choose to
install KDE (not necessary using it), system will return a message saying X
crashed and ask me to report it as a bug, at the moment it loads GUI.
Nothing is wrong if I only install Gnome, or install all versions of
Mandrake, with absolutely the same X settings.

Since this problem exists in more than one major RH release, I think it is
not be a bug. I am using Voodoo3 3000 in this machines with usual working
HD, monitor and so on.

I want to know, does someone set up RH secessfuly with Voodoo3 and KDE? I
am really puzzled. Any suggestions would be great!

trn requires some kind of inews on the system in order to post, so it
depends on it. (Note that the inews package is actually the one from C
News.)

>> On a previous system I ran leafnode and it handled everything,

Does leafnode provide an 'inews' program? If so, it ought to have a
'Provides: inews' field, as many packages depend on that.

All you should need to do is say no to the confirmation question, go
back into the "[S]elect" screen, and ensure they're marked to install.
If there *is* a problem, you'll be told about it. I suspect you may have
accidentally marked some other news transport system to be installed;
for example, if you tried to install the inews package itself, it
depends on cnews.

>> Eventually I went to the Debian Web pages, found the latest stable trn

--force-depends is almost always a really, *really* bad idea, and I
wouldn't get into the habit of using it. Lack of dependencies usually
indicates a genuine problem (unless you're running unstable, when it
could be just a cock-up, and even then it deserves a bug report).

There is no bug. inews is a mixed virtual package; it is provided both
by the inews package itself and by other packages like inewsinn. Virtual
packages don't always have role-based names.

If you do find a genuine bug, please talk to the bug tracking system
instead (see the documentation on http://bugs.debian.org/) so that the
conversation is properly recorded in case somebody else takes over the
trn package in the future.

Even if you run trn in remote mode, it looks for a local inews to do the
transport. The inewsinn and inn2-inews packages are there so that you
don't have to have a full news server in order to have the inews that
comes with inn or inn2 respectively.

dselect won't remove packages on that basis, nor will any of Debian's
other packaging tools to the best of my knowledge. They will only remove
packages due to explicit requests, conflicts, or the removal of
dependencies.

  [cjw44@riva ~]$ dpkg -p inewsinn | grep Provides
  Provides: inews
  [cjw44@riva ~]$ dpkg -p inn2-inews | grep Provides
  Provides: inews

It doesn't really matter much. I use inewsinn, but then I have inn
installed too. From the looks of inews' dependencies, you don't want
that one.

You mean that packages dependent on absent packages will be slated for
removal? Is there any way to say "no" to remove and "yes" to install
at the same time? I am having a bit of a job stopping debian removing
jlex and other trivia because I replaced jdk1.1 with jdk1.2 from
blackdown ...

.. as far as I can see, I have to install the java-virtual-machine-dummy
package. But trying to download it through apt-get, apt-get bows out
claiming that I should fix dependencies first. That would remove the
things I want the dummy package to shore up.

A fix would be an explicit way to edit the dependency info. It appears
to be present in /var/lib/dpkg/status, and I've managed to trick one
system into installing the dummy package while not removing the rest
that way. But I believe that adding my jdk1.2 package to a "dummy
debian server" and adding the dummy server to /etc/apt/conf/sources_list
(approx) would be the better way to go.

Any suggestions?

I'm trying to set up a DHCP server on a linux 6.1 box. I'm trying to attach
the address 192.168.0.102 to workstation windows2000. Instead, it always
attaches the address 192.168.0.100, which works OK, but I would rather be
able to assign a specific address.

When I run the ipconfig /all command, the DNS servers (from my ISP) do not
appear. Nor does the gateway, so I can't ping anything on the internet, but
I can ping workstations on the intranet.

The dhcpd.conf file is reproduced below. The two subnets are for two
different NICs, the first goes to the internet and the second is for my
intranet.

Helle everybody,

I was wondering where I can setup the directory that should
be use to build an rpm file. Usually it is
/usr/src/redhat/BUILD (on RedHat systems) but I don't want
my /usr partition used for this, rather something like /var.
Probably I was blind, but I could not find anything in
rpmrc.

Any ideas? Thanks a lot,

As was pointed out earlier, the compiler that ships with RH7
is not suited to compile kernels. RH ships with kgcc, the
"kernel gcc" which should be able to compile the kernel
(will have to try these days). Editing the main Makefile
should to it. Look for the line defining the compiler (cc) and
replace it with kcc. That should do it.

Cheers, Tobias

that contains the / mountpoint. I have the following 2 partitions:

/dev/hda8 = mount point /home

If I wanted to create a /newusr on /dev/hda7 I would cd / and then mkdie

cd /home and then mkdir ../newusr but it didn't work.
For a floppy I would cd /mnt/floppy and then mkdir /mnt/floppy/newusr
