Subject: Which version to install?
Date: Tue, 25 Jul 2000 00:08:13 -0400

Hi All,

I'm new to Linux and know just a bit of Unix. I would like to install
something easy to setup and use. My computer is 2 years old P300, 64M ram,
STB Velocity Video Card, SB compatible Sound Card. So far I'm considering
Mandrake and Red Hat. Would like to be able to boot to multiple OS (not just
two). Is BDS an alternative for a newbie?

Any comments and web addresses appreciated,
Kitty

Either change the Modes "1024x768" to "800x600" or for both, make it:

Modes "1024x768" "800x600"

Then you can switch from 1024x768 to 800x600 using the left Ctrl-Alt and
keypad plus (Ctrl-Alt-+) when MSIE users put tiny print in their web
pages.

I use another Red Hat 6.2 clone. I didn't do any scripting but simply
configure PPP as PAP (no scripting) like a Windows 95. It werks!I
suggest try first PAP and if it doesn't work then try the hard way --
script...

I hate that Gnome because it's too ugly in a 12.1" notebook screen with too thick
horizontal bottom panel I can't even put as 'tiny' like kde. Well if you can't see
KDE when you set to runlevel 5 it doesn't hurt to reinstall all over again.

OK, but the AlphaServer 2100 isn't listed as supported hardware. I've

i updated our RedHat linux system (i686) from v6.1 to v6.2. after the
upgrade booting the system results in kernel panic. i managed to get the
machine up and running by downgrading the kernel to the version from
v6.1 (vmlinuz-2.2.12-20smp).

the system has software RAID 5 disks, /dev/sda1 is the non-RAID
root/boot disk. here's a partial boot log from RedHat's
vmlinuz-2.2.16-3smp kernel:

...
scsi: detected total
md.c: sizeof(mdf_super_t)=4096
partition check:
autodetecting RAID arrays
autorun ...
... autorun done.
request_module[block-major-8]: root fs not mounted
VFS: cannot open root device 08:01
kernel panic: VFS: unable to mount root fs on 08:01

any ideas on what might go wrong with the more recent kernel?

Two possibilities I know of are:

1. Check to see if /etc/lilo.conf is not empty. This happened to me
once.

2. If your system has an aic78xx SCSI controller it may compiled as a
module. On my system I have to compile it into the kernel instead or I
get a kernel panic at boot time.

Boot with the boot disk you made during the upgrade and at the prompt
enter:

linux root=/dev/hdaX # where X is the correct root partition.
Or You may be able to fix it by a kernel compile if you got it to boot.

It is a good Operating System. For what it is designed to do.

If one of your requirements for an OS is "user friendly, meaning there's
only one obvious way to do things and it's all hidden from me so I dont
have to do anything but run applications" then linux won't be a good OS
for you.

It's not meant to be "windows without microsoft's name on it".

It's not meant to be "a desktop OS for people who don't want to know
about computers".

It's a server operating system that can be used as a desktop machine.
It's good for programmers, for system admins, for people who like to play.

If the command line bores you, if reading man pages isn't your thing,
if you don't like to think and experiment and deduce... then Linux isn't
for you.

But if you do like to explore and experiment, if you are good at reading
and working out what to do from the written word, if you don't just want
a platform to run applications on, then linux could be a good OS for you.

But please please... be honest with yourself. This is *not* a user
friendly system. It is a powerful system, designed for people willing
to gain and use the skills needed.

Think of the nice cordless drill someone buys to use to hang a door.
No chuck, everything clearly labelled, all the drill bits in the box.
You don't need much skill, you just open the box get the drill out,
and go to work. Sure, it isn't exactly fulfilling but you just want to
hang a door.

Think of a small jobbing engineering shop, with manual lathes and mills
and tools and gear everywhere. The craftsman is there, twirling dials,
rigging tools, fast and efficient and producing wonderful things through
his skill and knowledge. Watch him and you'll have no clue why he's
doing the things he's doing. Why that dial? Why that tool? Why that
bit of metal stock and not that one? Why cut in that order?

If you are a person who just wants to hang a door you won't want to be
a fitting and turning apprentice. But if making things fascinates you
and you want to learn... then you'll go into that machine shop, sign
the apprenticeship papers, and start learning.

Knowing that you won't know much for the first year or two, and that
you will have to do a lot of work before you become worth your money.

If that's you.. welcome :)

Zebee

Mandrake 7.x, or SuSE 6.4 (6.7 is coming in a few days). NOT Red Hat.

A hint: Try "Running Linux" by Matt Welsh and Lar Kaufman, published by
O'Reilly & Associates. (http://www.oreilly.com/). Somehow this book
manages to cover almost everything you need to get you up to speed,
without becoming superficial - there's solid content in it. The third
edition was recently pubished. (I've got the first ed.)

Of course you'll already know about manual pages, but for those reading
this who didn't, you access them, for example, with

# man lilo

Then there are the HOWTOs, to be found in /usr/doc/howto (or similar),
best read with the program "less".

Linux is _user_ friendly. That's not quite the same thing as being
_beginner_ friendly.
