hi all

i recently switched from rh5.2 to suse 6.4, using kde in both distribs.
everything was ok under rh5.2, but now (suse6.4) i'm unable to get the
"lower" and "greater" signs (using a french "azerty"-keyboard). works
in a text console or any other wm (fvwm, fvwm2 and afterstep) but kde
seems to change the key-bindings. how can i restore the initial behaviour ?
thanx for your help !

Subject: SCSI emulation with ATAPI device
Date: Tue, 25 Jul 2000 14:03:59 +0300

Hi, everyone!
I have Red Hat 6.0 with 2.2.12 kernel
I also have a CD-ROM (ATAPI) and I want to use it with
SCSI emulation (because I'll buy a CD-R (also ATAPI) and
I want to check out SCSI emulation earlier)
During the kernel compilation, I disabled
"IDE/ATAPI CD-ROM support" and enabled as modules
"SCSI emulation", "SCSI support", "SCSI CD-ROM support" and
"SCSI generic support".
The problem is that the "ide-scsi" module (from SCSI emulation) is not
loaded when I access my CD-ROM.
The only way I could see my CD-ROM with SCSI emulation is if I
enable all the above directly in the kernel (not as modules).
Can anyone tell me what I have to do now to see my CD-ROM with
all the above enabled as modules?
Thanks in advance :)

To be accessible by the SCSI device driver, the CD-Rom (CD Writer)
MUST NOT BE under the control of the IDE device driver.
So, remove the IDE/ATAPI CD-ROM Support, and leave only
the SCSI support.

Of course, this way you have to check also that /dev/cdrom is
a link to /dev/scd? (substitute ? with the correct number).

See also the CD-Writing-HOWTO that is very clear about (the
new version, not that is shipped with RH, see on www.linux.org).

Can you do a:
chkconfig --list httpd
if so, you can do:
chkconfig --level 3 httpd on
Then it will start in runlevel 3 ...

Is it possible with partion Magic to shrink a Windows-2000 NTFS
primary boot partition C: ? I'd like to create a gap on my harddrive
which would be below the 1024 cylinder boundary, and on which
I could install Lilo. Then I would like to install the rest of Linux
on free harddisk space which is located beyond the 1024 cylinder
boundary.

Close but no cigar. You'll have to build pppd with MSCHAP support. There
is a readme file for MSCHAP included. Just follow the directions and
everything
should work. I have a working RAS connection since several years back.

If you want to have callback from RAS, it can also be fixed. There is a CBCP

readme as well that describes what you have to do.

Try it out for yourself. If you can't make it work, get back to me and
I will send
you a working wrapper script and config file.

/Anders.

I was wondering if it is necessary for a videocard to support overlay to

that in Windows it does work, even though my videocard doesn't support

I'm not sure about the RedHat 6.0 with the 2.2.12 kernel, currently I am
using RH 6.2 with 2.2.16-3.

Create a file, if it does not already exist, /etc/rc.d/rc.modules.

chmod uga+x rc.modules

in that file, add this line:

/sbin/modprobe ide-scsi

Now, in your /dev directory, make sure "cdrom" is not linked to hdx
(hda, hdb, etc.) and link it to scd0.

The rc.modules file loads the scsi emulation driver early in the boot
process and this seems to circumvent whatever crap RedHat does between
this stage and the login prompt which always seems to load the IDE cdrom
driver. The init scripts and kudzo are so convoluted, I just don't have
the patience to walk through it.

Subject: Port forwarding or NAT : Do I need some more package ?
Date: Tue, 25 Jul 2000 15:01:22 +0200

Hello,

I'm a newbie in the firewalling field.... I just installed a RedHat
Linux 6.2 box with 2 NICs and ipchains to do some firewalling and
masquerading. It works great and my purpose is now to grand restricted
access from the Internet to some internal services (SMTP + HTTP) that
runs on an internal machine.

Every exemple of configuration scripts that are said to do that use
"ipmasqadm" command, wich is not present in my distribution. When
looking for some more informations, I read that ipchains is a new
substitute for ipmasqadm...
So :
- Is it possible to configure NAT or port forwarding with just ipchains
?
- If yes, can you post some example ?
- If no, do I need to download ipmasqadm ? And if Yes, what version (I
don't want to get conflict between the two tools...)

Another solution can be to install a second NIC on that internal SMTP +
HTTP server, listening to the Internet with filtered ports (only 25, 80,
53 and above 1023...)

What is best ?

Thanks in advance for your help...

Charly

When you install the OSS drivers, they report finding a SBlive card? What
about irq issues? One thing that happened to me when I installed my SBlive
card was that I physically installed it in a pci slot that the system wanted
to share with my network card. Not a good thing since the network card
claimed the irq first and was not in a charitable mood. At this level, OSS
would find the card, but no sounds came forth. I tried excluding,
including, and about everything else; but the pci bus really wanted to share
the irq between the two slots. I physically moved the SBlive card to the
next open pci slot and... voila. Sound with the commercial OSS drivers.
I am not overly patient with things like sound and like immediate
gratification :) I tried the ALSA stuff and decided that for me OSS
commercial worked quite well.

You may want to check whether your system is actually attempting to share an
irq with a device that takes the irq earlier on.

Hi,

I'm desperately looking for someone who got his Onstream DI-30 IDE
tape drive to work with any of the latest SuSE (6.3 or 6.4)
distributions.

Support for this (supposedly) nice piece of hardware is included in
the SuSE kernel.

I thought that I got everything to work, but 'tarring' an archive to a
tape, I cannot read my written tapes. When I start the restore,
everything seems to work fine, but after extracting some files from a
tape, I always get a tar-error message: 'tar: read error on /dev/ht0:
Input/Output error'. After I get this message 10 times, I get the
error: 'Tar: too many errors, quitting', and everything stops.

Who experienced this before?

Please, HELP!

At the Ms-Dos prompt type debug. Next to the - type DC000:35 or DC000:50.
This gives you your display adapter..

I believe that Partition Magic from versions 4 on, is able to resize an NTFS
partition correctly. It was version 3 that had some problems with NTFS.

I would imagine that it's because the /boot directory of your Linux
installation (including the kernel) is out beyond 1024 cylinders
(8.4 Gigs). To confirm this you could try booting
your Linux installation from a boot floppy.
