I think that the shipped kernel does not contains the required
drivers. AFAIK, the only solution is: start the machine with a DOS
boot disk with the required CDRom drivers, create a temporary
DOS partition on the machine, copy all the required distribution
files into the partition and install Linux from that partition, then
recompile the kernel and add the drivers to access the CDRom.

AFAIK, Windows is not able to boot from a non-primary disk, I think
you have to switch disks: the primary Windows and the secondary
Linux.

The only thing I can think is a problem with the hardware probing.
Try disabilitate/remove all the unnecessary hardware.

No, each file/directory has 1 set of permissione for the owner,
1 set for 1 group and 1 set for "everybody else".

You have to create a new group, and then put into it all the user of
group 1 and 2. Then give the correct right to the file for that group.

I found very interesting a manual about security in Unix (not specific
about Linux...). I suppose you can found a dozen like that in your
bookstore.

I don't think so. AFAIK, the binaries support is not "modular", only
device drivers and filesystem support is modular. But I can be wrong,
so check during the compilation.

Yes, you can configure LILO with multiple kernel, but if something
goes VEEERY WRONG, you can be unable to access the / partition, this
will rendere unusable the system, *unless* you have an old-good
boot disk that allow you to re-enter the system and fix the problem.

Right. I ended up having to reboot my computer (I was unable to shut it down
properly,
so it was forced.) On bootup, it wouldn't load all the daemons, but I was
able to run
fsck manually. It reported some errors, and corrected them, and I haven't
had any
problems since.

However - does it sound like I have a crook disk drive (HDD), or is it only
the file
system that was the problem?

I think there's a HOWTO, but I diremember its name. So here's the quick rundown.
If you're running NT on a FAT filesystem, just install LILO on the MBR, and tell the
Linux
installer NT is a DOS partition, and you want to be able to boot it. This will NOT
interfere with
your NT operation.
Install Linux on ID:1 when the installer asks where to install LILO tell it the boot
block or boot
sector of the Linux root partition. If your Linux installer offers to make a bootdisk,
do so. Then,
before you reboot, do these things:
mount a DOS-formatted floppy. NOT your bootdisk ;o)
# mount -t vfat /mnt/floppy # or /floppy on a SuSE install
 then copy the boot sector to a file on the floppy. Assuming "/" is /dev/sdb1;
# dd if=/dev/sdb1 of=/mnt/floppy/bootsect.lnx bs=512 count=1
 unmount the floppy
# umount /mnt/floppy

Boot into NT. Right click on C:\boot.ini, choose "Properties" and unclick "Read Only"
Leave this
window open. Double-click on boot.ini and add this line last:

C:\BOOTSECT.LNX="Linux"

Save it, close it, make it read-only again. Then copy the file you made on floppy
(bootsect.lnx) to
C:\
When you reboot to NT, you should be able to choose "Linux"

Remember that anytime you recompile your kernel or edit /etc/lilo.conf, you need to do
all that
again.

Subject: Modem Setup Difficulty
Date: 26 Jul 2000 07:15:09 GMT

I have recently purchased an Actiontec 56K modem to replace my ancient 28.8 modem.
Until the installation of my new moden, I haven't had too many problems getting my ppp
connection to my ISP to redial after my connection was closed, but now, I am having
this difficulty.

I am running a Linux box with kernel version 2.2.14. I am using the demand dial option
of pppd to bring up my connection whenever I need it.

I have been noticing, with the new modem, that when I leave the connection down for a
long length of time (> 2 minutes - OK not "long" in some realms of belief), my serial
settings for my modem gets hosed. Currently, I run setserial <device parameters> in my
rc.serial script, which initializeds my ttyS1 serial port that my modem is hanging off
of.

I can then initiate my ppp connection and everything is just fine. If the link goes
down ad I immediately attempt to re-establish my connection, again, everything is just
fine.

The problem only occurs if I keep the link down after a few minutes or so (only after
the initial link has been established and disconnected).

I did notice in my logs that it is running setserial without any parameters (which is
most likely where my serial settings are getting trashed) just before the ppp link is
brought back up, but obviously, nothing happens until I reset the serial device to the
correct parameters.

The following is the exact message from my /var/log/messages...

Jul 25 23:45:22 kokomaht kernel: Serial driver version 4.27 with no serial optio
ns enabled
Jul 25 23:45:22 kokomaht kernel: ttyS00 at 0x03f8 (irq = 4) is a 16450

Why is "setserial" being run again and where can I insert the parameters so that when
it does run setserial, it inserts the parameters that I want it to?

Any help would be appreciated.

David

Well, I did this, and I got a whole stack of errors. None of which make
any sense to me. Can you tell anything from here what might be the
problem? Looks like there might be a number of them. Before running
these, I reset the passwords for two of my accounts (not mike though,
this is the one that I am using now and it works fine), and then got out
to the GUI and tried to login. When that didn't work I went back to one
of the two logins that does work (mike) and then ran this from the
console.

Thanks for your help. This is an annoying problem.

That simply means there's no standard startup script in /etc/rc.d/init.d

So, you probably installed apache from scratch -

You can put something in rc.local like:

/usr/local/apache/bin/apachectl start

Chipper:
If you know irq and io of 3c509(b) card then try supplying this info by
appending following to the kernel boot command at the end:
ether=irq,io,0,0,eth0
e.g., if irq=5, io=0x210, and you have only one ethernet card then this is
what you supply
ether=5,0x210,0,0,eth0
This should work if you have compiled ethernet drivers in the kernel.
After booting do dmesg | less at the prompt and check if eth0 actually came
up.
