I'm not shure what you are asking, but do you have your DNS server
address in the /etc/resolv.conf file???

Are you trying to do a
"smbpasswd -j <your DOMAIN name> -r <your DOMAINPDC>"????
This is the command you need to run to set you up as a domain member.
take a look for the samba docs under /usr/doc. take a look for
DOMAIN_MEMBER.txt

All:
I've been trying to create a dual boot Win98/Linux box. I'm struggling with
the partition and install of my disk. I've got a Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 40
HDD. It doesn't support LBA.....from what I read, many new drives don't.
Thus high cylinder numbers. I'm trying to install Mandrake 6.1 with kernel
2.213.
This is my partition table from Linux fdisk:
Device Boot Start End Blocks
Id System
/temp/hda1 * 1 508 256000+
83 Linux native
/temp/hda2 * 509 15239 742424 c
Win95 FAT32 (LBA)
/temp/hda3 15240 15443 182816 82
Linux swap
/temp/hda4 15444 29777 722473 5
Extended
/temp/hda6 15444 29777 722473 83
Linux native
If I do a v.......verify I get:
Warning: partition 2 overlaps partition 3.
Warning: partition 3 overlaps partition 6.
Warning: partition 5 is empty.
Logical partition 6 not entirely in partition 4
This makes like no sense to me at all!!!!!!
If I go to Disk Druid to mount the drives, I mount hda1 at /boot and hda6
at/.
I get no errors but when I try to install I get:
making ext2 filesystem on /devhda6.......
making ext2 filesystem on /devhda1.......
mount failed: Invalid argument
What gives. I have no Idea what to try now.
I think Linux is having problems with my disk geometry but I really don't
know.

Do you want to use ftp/telnet as client or do you want your machine
to act as server? The daemons are only needed for server machines.

Mandrake is rpm-based, right?

Usually, when you see ABit BP6 w 2 Celerons means OC/ing.
The root of many crashing and instability problem experienced by mostly
gamers
who don't want to pay for a pair of faster speed CPUs and a decent SMP
mobo like

If you're a newbie _and_ using SUSE I suggest KDE.
But to make things easier you should install both.

Have a look at the large HD HOWTO, most drives over
33.8GB the BIOS will have problems.
The howto will explain about the issues.

Help!
I recently installed RH 6.2 form the CD to a new machine (Dell Laptop)
but I am having a problem upgrading the kernel.
I followed the instructions on the RedHat (whick worked perfectly on
anonther machine) but when I get to the last step activating the new
lilo configuration I get an error when I run lilo -v :
LILO version 21, Copyright 1992-1998 Werner Almesberger
Reading boot sector from /dev/hda7
Merging with /boot/boot.b
Boot image: /boot/vmlinux-2.2.16-3
Kernel /boot/vmlinux-2.2.16-3 is too big
Anyone know how to fix this?

I recently got rid of my windoze partition. I blew it away to make more
room for linux.
My problem though is this
I found how in order to extend the partition you have to goto fdisk
remove the partition then recreate it using the full size of course
starting at the same sector/cylinder.
Ok everything appears ok boots fine.
goto fdisk /dev/hda -> looks great
but when I run df it still shows the old information??
what have I missed How do I correct this info??
I have searched everywhere and cannot find an answer

Yes, this is the parent directory that the device is mounted under. It is
owned by root to prevent a user from erasing it.
It shouldn't make a difference as far as applications go, since the
directory should have execute permissions for world, to allow anyone
(including an application not running as root) to change into it.

Do an
ls -al /cdrom
if the permissions field doesn't have an "x" in the rightmost position, such
as "r-xr-xr-x" then do a
chmod +x /cdrom
from a root xterm.
Also, make sure that for a directory such as this, that there are NO "w"s in
the permissions field. You don't want anyone storing files there, especially
since a read-only device will be mounted there.

That means I'm not being very clear then...
I've since narrowed the crashing down to graphical interfaces to RPM. RPM
called from the command line works like a champ, but both gnorpm and
kpackage crash the system (hard) about 1 time in 10. I've tried
various RPM's from the 3.0.x
family and compiled two of them myself, and still the same problem.
What's really strange is that RPM's graphical interfaces are so common and
the problem seems unique to me... could it be hardware-related?
I run a SMP system on an Abit BP6 motherboard, but I get the same problems
in uniprocessor mode, so I don't think it's a SMP issue. I have a Voodoo3
graphics card and a SoundBlaster Live sound card, plus ISA and PCI SCSI cards.
Any clues?

No overclocking. System is absolutely stable under load and the memory is
100% good. Temperatures always well within spec.
And I thought BP6 WAS a decent mobo...
Besides, it's only kpackage and gnorpm that hit me. I've never had a crash
outside of those. I've looked at all the standard BP6 stuff. I've stress-
tested. Done all sorts of graphics stuff. Runs fine in Windoze.
A real puzzler. Anyone have anything I should try now?

Are you running the ALSA sound drivers? If so, I'd be surprised if it's not
supported as there appears to be good coverage for the Creative cards.

Try building a compressed kernel:
cd /usr/src/linux
make bzImage
cp -p arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/vmlinuz-2.2.16-3
Change lilo.conf to point to the new kernel and rerun lilo.

If MS-Glassware kidnapped your drives then the poor Lux does not have a place
to land.
You have to prepare for him unpartitioned space on disk.
If the 1.2G is free try to install minimal installation on it.
SuSE comes on 6 CD's and a newbie gets lost in the jungle of programs, many of
them perform
similar functions.
If you have the evaluation CD of SuSE 6.4 then you are safe. Tried it and let
it do it's own thing
"no hassle".
If you want to learn the OS then from the two distros mentioned go SuSE.
And quoting SuSE "Have a lot of fun..."

either: backup the filesystem, recreate it full size, and restore it; or,
you may be able to use one of the commercial or free "partition managers"
which claim to be able to non-destructively resize a partition.
But if the filesystem in question is your system (boot) partition,
why not just create and mount the extra space as a new filesystem
in a new partion (like hda2)? This is a much safer way to use
the extra space.
