For a while there you seemed like a reasonable person, but now you are

Subject: SCSI Problem with Mandrake 7.1
Date: Sun, 30 Jul 2000 00:50:46 -0400
I've been trying to install a SCSI card (Adaptec AHA2940U2W) and not having
very good luck. (Since there's no relevant documentation from either Adaptec
or Mandrake, luck is all I have to go on.) Here's what's happening:
When I boot the system goes through its normal scan of the hardware, finds the
IDE hard drive and IDE CD drive, then says "SCSI bus not found". Shortly
after this comes up:
================================================================
Adaptec AH-2940U2W SCSI BIOS v2.20.0
[pause]
Press Ctrl A for SCSI Select Utility
[if I just let it go, in a couple seconds it says:]
Time Out Failure During SCSI Inquiry Command!
Rescanning For SCSI Devices
[pause, then]
SCSI bus is being reset for host 0 channel 0
SCSI host 0 channel 0 reset (pid 0) timed out - trying harder
================================================================
It will repeat those last two lines as long as you let it. So I reboot.
(Ctrl-Alt-Del works fine most of the time.) This time I pres "Ctrl-A" when it
says I can and go into the "SCSI Select(TM) Utility v2.20.0" and find lots of
selections I can make. One that I can't select that I know I'd like to is HELP.
It's not there. Nor is there any documentation. I've gone looking at the
websites for Adaptec, Mandrake, and Macmillan (Macmillan has partnered with
Mandrake to sell and support v.7.1, but they're much more tuned into selling).
None of these sites has any documentation or drivers to get this SCSI card
working on Mandrake.
Plowing away in the "SCSI Select(TM) Utility v2.20.0", I went into "SCSI
Device Configuration" and set SCSI Device ID #1's "Sync Transfer Rate" to 40.0
MB/Sec. Rebooting again, there was no difference.
I ran a scan on all the SCIS IDs and it found only the card itself (on SCSI ID
#7), not the CDRW which I set to 1 on it (with a jumper). This scan found
only #7, not #1.
Went in to the same screen on the next boot and set "Initiate Wide
Negotiation" to "No" on all SCSI IDs except #1 (the CDRW) and #7 (the Adaptec
itself). Rebooted and the same thing happened. I made some other changes and
the same happened each time.
What's missing?

Thanks... that definately answers my question... and raises another one...
when I do a vga=ask, and then scan, I get a list from 0 to b (1-9,a-b)... I
can type in either 9, or 0122 (I guess the hex value...) and have it load
the
resolution (in my case, 100x30...) but I can't seem to put either vga=9 or
vga=0122 in the lilo conf file... it accepts them, but gives me an ask
prompt
during boot... are the only ones that I can use the ones that come up first,
before the scan...
And one more... when I do get vga=788, etc to load (I guess my kernel must
have
had framebuffer support enabled already...) my console is flaked out after
returning from a startx Gnome session... none of the modes seems to cure
it, and
I have to reboot to get a "clean" console...
Thanks again...

Sometimes this can be done in the mobo BIOS. Otherwise you might have a
file called something like /etc/system/keyboard in which you can say
something like "NUMLOCK=ON". man -k keyboard may bring up more info.

I've had several problems with Mandrake 7.1, but none with getting my IDE CD
drive to work.
What you might try:
Go into Kdesktop, K, Settings, Hardware, HardDrake, and see what it shows
there. Harddrake should do it for you.

I've found it helpful in cases like this to examine the messages that show
up on the screen when X bombs. A couple of time it was simply "Mouse not
found", i.e., the mouse cable came out of its plug in the back of the box.
I plugged it back in and X ran fine.

Subject: Mandrake Linux 7.0/7.1 cdrom and floppy Locked Directory
Date: Sun, 30 Jul 2000 05:30:05 GMT
I have been running Mandrake 6.1 on two computers that dual boot
windows/linux. Both machines have been rock solid and linux has been very
stable. I just replaced Mandrake 6.1 with 7.0 and started having problems.
After installing 7.0 on both machines if I try to look at the directory on
the cdrom or 3.5 floppy it says KFM ERROR cannot display directory
contents.
I can mount either drive fine but cannot see what is on them. After
reinstalling the system at least three times on both computers and
reconfiguring the drives still no luck. So, I bought Mandrake 7.1 from
Cheapbytes thinking maybe it was a glitch. 7.1 seems to have a flakey
install but after I got past that I still have the same problem. I have got
most every thing else to work. In KDE if I cursor over the /mnt/cdrom or
/mnt/floppy it says Locked Directory. I have seen this problem listed on
other forums but no one gave an answer or fix. I have been working with
linux about a year. ie: Red Hat and Mandrake

Save a copy of your current XF86Config file.
>From a root system prompt run xf86config and see if you can find your
mouse listed. Or, yes, you could try editing the XF86Config file
directly and trying out different possibilities.
NB: When you say "nothing happens", I'm assuming that X does not start
and comes back with an error message. It's generally easier to diagnose
problems when you give us the exact error message.

Subject: Triple-Boot with 98+NT+Redhat for a 18 GB HDD?
Date: Sun, 30 Jul 2000 12:49:06 +0800
Hi! I guess that maybe you may encounter the same problem since your laptop
HDD is huge and can offer me a ray of hope into this problem. I am trying
to install a triple-boot on my laptop - win98/2000/red hat. I have created
a FAT16 primary partition (2GB) for my Win 98 and next created a FAT32
logical partition that is contained in the extended partition (14GB) and try
to install the rest (2 GB) with Red Hat. I choose "Gnome Workstation" for
the "installation type" and instead of automatically install and allocates
the remainder 2 GB for Red Hat. Red Hat prompted me a interface that talks
about mounting drives which leaves me puzzled; default installation does not
have this interface. Why is that so? I have read a few documentations and
the closest problem I have seems to be that I am trying to install beyond
the 1024th cylinder of the hard drive; my HDD is about >2000th cylinders.
How do I install a boot partition with the first 8.4 GB with the following
configuration
This what the Disk Druid Shows:
Mount Point Device Requested Actual Type
<not set> hda1 2045M 2045M DOS 16-bit>=32 MB
<not set> hda5 13215M 13215M Win98 FAT32
Drive Geom[C/H/S] Total (M) Free (M) Used (M) Used (%)
hda 2343/240/63 17297 2037 15260 88
When I tried to add a /boot partition that is 16MB (Linux Native), The
following error mesage appears:
"They are currently unallocated partition present in the list of requested
partitions. The unallocated partition are shown below, along with the
reason why they were not allocated"
"/boot Boot partition too big"

It should be created automatically when you add in a new user. So root, at
least, should already be there. Since it's not, you could do it by hand.
As root, do:
cd /var/spool/mail
touch root
chown root:mail root
chmod 660 root
As said, useradd or adduser (whichever you use) should do this as part of
creating a new user account.

Do:
cd /etc
ls ftp*
You'll find configuration files there which you need to edit to grant different
persons/groups different kinds of permissions. Also do:
ps aux |grep ftp
to see if the daemon is running. If it isn't, then you have to start it
(generally done at boot via an rc*/).

The access.conf and srm.conf " FILES " are no longer needed. The
entries originally used in these files are now integrated into
httpd.conf in current releases of Apache.
