Subject: console magic problem
Date: Mon, 21 May 2001 11:34:16 GMT
Hi folks,
Since a few days I get an error message during starting up my Suse 7.1.
Something with an unexpected token in line 561 of /etc/XF86Config for
console_magic. I tried several options already, but without succes. From the
same moment it shows a different login screen, not with the icons and option
to start different desktops (KDE, GNOME etc), just with two lines for login
and password, after which it automatically proceeds into KDE. I guess those
two problems are related. Can someone help me out here with some advice?
Thanks in advance.

I use Caldera on my 486 boxes. v1.3. Don't know any of the later ones,
though I have to say 1.3 installs very easy. And it's text-based, don't need
a hi-res monitor.

You may need to download a newer driver for that card. I have that exact
card and version in a computer at the office and needed to go to the Linksys
site and download a newer driver for it to work.

There was a Linux Gazette article on this close to a year ago:
http://gazette.euskal-linux.org/issue55/florido.html
There's been a lot of progress on journaling filesystem development
since then, though, and the article contains some inaccuracies (like an
incorrect maximum file size for ext3fs). Presently, ReiserFS and XFS
are officially non-beta, but JFS and ext3fs are still officially in
beta test, the last I heard. The last I checked, ReiserFS is in the
kernel (as of 2.4.1), but XFS isn't yet. Do a search on
http://groups.google.com, because there have been some recent threads
on the topic. Most people posting to these threads seem to like XFS,
but ReiserFS and ext3fs both have their adherents, too. JFS seems to
have a lower profile, and I don't know how usable it is at the moment.
Personally, I'm using ReiserFS for some partitions on a couple of
systems, and have had no problems with it. I haven't yet tried XFS, but
I probably will before too long.

Hi,
I have installed samba-latest.tar.gz.
and installed mount-2.8a(compiled with the patch
which has come with this version) and mountsmbfs-1.0
after that while mounting the share of windows NT machine,
mount -t smbfs -o username=XXX,password=XXX,rw //machine/sharename
/windows
its simply accepting the command and immediately bash prompt is
coming.
If i execute mount to see whether the share mounted onto linux
directory or not...
I observed that it was not mounted..
Could any help me out in sorting out the problem?
thanks in advance,

New to Linux, but used command-line Unix many years ago. Have just
installed Red Hat 7.1 onto a pure Linux machine, and am running it in
command line mode only (no X Windows) under bash.
Problem: 80 columns by 25 rows on a 17" monitor screen makes the command
line look like an old Commodore 64 on a TV screen. How do I change to 132
columns by 40-50 rows? Also, how do I change text colors and attributes?
Video adapter is a Shuttle VA28 (SiS 6326), if that helps.
Thanks,

Sounds like you killed something in the /home/Stewart/gaim directory.
re-unpack it too. Also, two other things. Always rm -f config.cache
config.status before runnign ./configure each time else the original
error is reloaded from these files.
Also, do you need to be root to do that?
Cheers, Gene

Doing anything specific you should compile it yourself... but I think all
you need is apache-php.rpm
got to http://rpm.org and search for php you'll find it.

Subject: ISA SCSI Card Problem
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Ernesto Guevara)
Date: 21 May 2001 19:38:01 +1000
i am pretty new to Linux so i am installing Red Hat 6.0
i need a step by step guide to installing my scsi card
its a Future Domain TMC-950 ISA.... the system runs
fine under win98.... so all the hardware works....
i just cant seem to get the scsi card & drives to detect or work
the driver seem to be there but i dont seem to be able use the right probe
string... i found it on the net and it said as follows...
Future Domain TMC-8xx, TMC-950 (`tmc8xx=')
The probe code for these SCSI hosts looks for an installed BIOS, and if none is
present, the probe will not find your card.
Or, if the signature string of your BIOS is not recognized then it will also not be
found. In either case, you will then have
to use a boot argument of the form:
================================================================================
tmc8xx=mem_base,irq
================================================================================
The mem_base value is the value of the memory mapped I/O region that the card uses.
This will usually be one of the following
values: 0xc8000, 0xca000, 0xcc000, 0xce000, 0xdc000, 0xde000.
so what do i type into the probe string...... exactly
please help!

thanx in advance!

I'm just wondering before I start to upgrade my linux
kernel from 2.2.15 to 2.4.4. Should I just upgrade the
kernel or the the whole Red Hat 6.2 to 7.1? I don't
have much hard drive space and I would just like (for
right now) to take advantage of the new features that
come with the new kernel.
Thx,

I had a TMC850 a long time ago, which I used with kernel 1.2.x and
2.0.x. I used lilo as a boot manager, and added the following to
the appropriate section of my lilo.conf (and then executed lilo):
"literal = "tmc8xx=0xca000,5""
For my setup, 0xca000 was the base address, and the card IRQ was 5.
You probably have to use something similar once you know the base
address and IRQ that your card is configured to use. My recollection
is that both of these are configured by jumpers on the card.
Later,
Ashok
