I got it to work. I had to install libxpm-devel. I did that and it worked.
Later though, I ran into problems with control-center. It turned out
that the problem already was noted in the gnome bug list so I found
the answer there ( to put in $(XPM_LIBS) in the makefile ).
I also had to do this change in a few other makefiles. Anyone knows
why I get this problem and other people don't get it?

I'm not too sure about that. I've had long experience with SMP, longer
with parallelism in general. In truth an SMP machine is going to have a
slightly decreased memory access per processor due to bus contention.
I/O is similarly affected. I/O that can be parallelised will see a
benefit, but serialised I/O will see no benefit. I've seen a 5-10% drop
in performance per CPU under Linux. Typically this is about 15-20% under
WinNT from my experience.
In this specific case disk access is faster due the to fact that I'm
running RAID on SCSI and not IDE. This is a SCSI/IDE issue, not SMP.

I'd be curious to know specifics. I might believe a small difference
could be achieved. What BIOS setting would cause a machine to run at 1/2
or 1/3 of the speed that it aught?

No, that isn't your problem: if it was, you never would have been able
to load xirc2ps_cs. You asked to have the base PCMCIA stuff linked
into your kernel, not as modules.
As a guess, maybe you tried to load xirc2ps_cs.o by hand but cardmgr
is not running. You'd need to look at your system log to see what is
wrong.

Thanks for replying. It's good to hear from somebody with a similar
machine. Your number is more along the lines that I'd expect. I'm
starting to wonder if the motherboard or RAM is defective.
> did you try a "hdparm -d1 /dev/hda", or adding some fancy options to

I've tuned the two hard drives. Not surprisingly it boosted HD
performance, but did not affect memory access performance.
# /sbin/hdparm -m16 -c3 -u1 -d1 /dev/hda
# /sbin/hdparm -m16 -c3 -u1 /dev/hdb
# hdparm -Tt /dev/hda /dev/hdb
/dev/hda:
Timing buffer-cache reads: 128 MB in 2.83 seconds = 45.23 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 64 MB in 6.14 seconds = 10.42 MB/sec
/dev/hdb:
Timing buffer-cache reads: 128 MB in 2.71 seconds = 47.23 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 64 MB in 12.90 seconds = 4.96 MB/sec
#
(As a side note, -d1 on hdb resets the bus so I have to leave it off.

I appreciate it. This is just a stupid C program compiled with gcc -Wall
-O2. You have to run it a couple of times to flush out stuff to swap
space before you get accurate numbers. I run it with 'time a.out' and
compared user time.
Because the program is so simple, I'm attaching it. Only hard-nosed
"never attach anything" bozos should object.

Reading kernel notes, this is an issue with the memory controller IC.
Aparently a very common one which does not always tell the truth.

The two sides are not talking to each other. They are shouting past each
other with no responses fro either side.
a) Put
asyncmap a0000
into /etc/ppp/options.
b) Put noccp into /etc/ppp/options ( the chances of you sharing a
compression algorithm with the other side is very small.
c) Check your modem to make sure that it is set up properly ( hardware
flow control, Full 9 wire serial line, ...)
You did not include the output of your chat connection, but I suspect
that you have irq problems on your modem-- ie the irq the modem uses is
not the same as that that your linux system thinks it uses.
setserial /dev/ttyS0
will tell you what linux thinks the irq is.
Note also make sure that the uart is the what is actually on the chip.
It it says 16550 this is almost certainly wrong-- it should be 16550a
Do not use wvdial. Just write your own scripts (for help see
axion.physics.ubc.ca/ppp-linux.html)
d) I am not sure that you cannot use demand with wvdial. Just put
demand
into /etc/ppp/options.
The first time pppd will connect directly with the far end. On timeout
it should then wait for the next demand to come through.

The message above is *not* from a standard track pppd. I've come
to associate it with wvdial. If you have removed any reference to
wvdial in your scripts then you have a non-standard pppd and there
is no way for me and most others here to know what might happen in
such a case.
Get a standard pppd via ftp from linuxcare.com.au in /pub/ppp.
The log is peculiar. The ISP peer doesn't send any request for an
authentication protocol in the LCP negotiations, and yet it starts
sending CHAP challenges after a time during which it shows no sign
of receiving any of pppd's IPCP requests.
The lack of response to the pppd IPCP requests could be caused by the
ISP being broken with respect to asyncmap negotiation, and in that
case adding the pppd option "asyncmap a0000" might get things working.
But you really need to make a fresh start with a pristine pppd from the
site mentioned above.

You really only need the install-ISO, but you might want the source-ISO

Hi Rob. What you might try is stealing some space
from the Windows partition and making it an ext2.
Then in your /etc/fstab you can add it to your Linux
file system. Linux likes to put things in certain directories
but one way to avoid running out of space is to move
stuff, such as /usr to annother partition and if need
be, putting a symbolic link to it with the ln command.
man ln
for details how to create links.
I'd suggest reading a bit about making a file system from multiple
devices(it's not the best idea to leave it a Fat32 since file
permissions won't work as expected. Use ext2.)
A good resource is:
http://www.linuxdoc.org/
Good luck. :)
