hello, i recently did a fresh install of redhat 7.1 on my dell inspiron
3200. i previously had redhat 6.2 on the machine-- everything worked
very nicely.
now, however, i'm having trouble getting the sound card to perform well
under kernel 2.4.4.
if xmms or realaudio is the only application active, sound works fine.
when i shift focus to another window with the mouse or if netscape
refreshes, i hear a distorted buzz or a garbled sound that stops when
the display has been updated (i.e. a new window is highlighted or
another part of the webpage is displayed).
this suggests that there might be some kind of conflict between the
video driver and the sound card. this is puzzling, because i believe
that i've configured the card to use the same settings in linux as it
uses under windows (everything works perfectly under windows 98).
i never had a problem like this with the 2.2 series of kernels or
earlier versions of redhat.
i'm not sure how to go about tracking down the problem. i searched on
deja, but i didn't find any solutions there.
any suggestions would be appreciated! i've attached my kernel
configuration file...

No problems here with RH7.1 with Radeon card (All in One Radeon), 128M PC 133
memory, ASUS A7V133
and SB Live Value.

Hi,
Currenlty, I have redhat 7.0, kernel ver: 2.2.16-22. yesterday, I
dowloaded kernet-2.4.4.tar.gz and untarred into /usr/src/ directory.
But , I can't run any make commands like make menuconfig or any other
commands to start compiling. I searched for make command in /
directory (find / -name make), but I can't find it. What am I
missing. pl help...
Cheers

I'm fond of pan myself, but it's rather gnome-centric so I don't know how
satisfactory it would be on a KDE system. Check out

I installed Debian 2.0 in 8megs of RAM and 270Mbytes of hard drive
last summer. You can choose what to install, so you can leave out
a lot of stuff (and save a lot of disk space). There was something
that I wanted that wasn't on the distribution, so a few months
ago I tried Slackware 7.0 (it was handy, in the form of "Slackware
Linux for Dummies" because the book was torn and it was half price).
I couldn't install it in the 8Megs. However, I was able to scrounge
up 2 1M SIMMs, and with 10Megs of RAM, I had no problem. I think,
but am not certain, that if I took out the extra RAM now and re-installed
it, I could get by with just 8Megs. Slackware likewise allows
you to install a minimal system.
If I was going to start installing Linux on simple systems, I'd get
ahold of older versions of various versions, and just play around.
Take a system that you won't worry about damaging (read destroying
what's on the hard disk) and try them. Doing a single install
isn't all that helpful because you forget the process when you
do another one some months later. You can play around with
the system, try out the applications and see what you need
and what you can get by with, and then try to get things
as simple as possible. 200Megabyte drives can now be bought
used for a few dollars, so you could actually physically switch
hard drives to try out a different flavor of Linux.
I don't yet know enough about Linux to know where the Big Requirements
are coming from. Certainly the later distributions come with a lot
more applications than earlier ones, but you don't need five different
text processors. For that matter, depending on the end use of the
computer, you can get by with one of the simpler text processors.
Sorting out what you need will give you plenty of hard disk space.
Earlier releases will say you need 8M of RAM (or 4M for that matter),
with equally small disk space, and higher requirements if you want
if you want a GUI. You probably lose out on speed, but those
were simpler Linuxes and so it may balance out. What you miss
by using an earlier release is something you'll have to look into.
One thing I keep seeing is that some of the later releases are
expecially problematic during the installation. In other words,
their requirements for RAM and disk space may be lower than
listed when running, but the actual installation hogs RAM
and if you don't meet the requirement you can't do the install.
I'm going to reply to the guy who thinks $400 is within reach,
and that may be of value to you.

Try fsck with the -f option.
If that runs successful, try badblocks (man badblocks).
That should give you an idea.

I would suspect hardware first and check the usual suspects: cabling,
termination, and ID conflicts. If all those look fine then perhaps the
drive itself is actually failing. I'd check cabling first though, given
the symptoms.
You say you recently installed RH 6.2, if you never experienced any
problems with this machine with other OS's or versions then perhaps some
software issue is to blame, but I would consider that less likely. Only If
I could do an A/B comparison with another version and consistantly see it
with one and not the other would I suspect software in a situation like
this.

I'm just curious...
What the hell do you want to do with 2 mouses? (mice?)

Don't post three times.
Your change in /etc/logfiles -> "/etc/init.d/syslog stop" and below that
"/etc/init.d/syslog start".
See if that works.

I've installed Caldera (1.3, mind you) on a 80486 machine with only 4MB of
RAM. Luckily you have a rather big harddrive, remember to setup swap during
installation, then it's unlikely to fail.
Most (if not all?) distributions allow you to install minimal systems. If
you need, you can use the install utility with the distro to install
additional packages, or simply use RPM.
Using an older distro is not that bad. Just get the updated RPMs for what
you need, and upgrade. That's the way some of my boxes have been running for
a few years now. Going out to buy the newest release of your distro
everytime they release one is too much for me. I'd rather just download the
RPMs, and upgrade...
