Thanks for your reply.
But after I download the ISO file, can I just copy it to CD-R in Win98?
If there's something else I have to do, could u tell me the steps or
where can I find these docs online? BTW,I have a CD-RW.

Thanks again.

You want isapnp. Once you get it set up right, the presence of an
/etc/isapnp.conf file will trigger the boot to configure the devices.

The basic procedure for setting up isapnp is:

pnpdump > /etc/isapnp.conf

Now edit /etc/isapnp.conf in you favorite editor.

Uncomment the section that matches the config you want, and set the values
for IRQ and other resources you want from the lists provided.

Uncomment the "Act Y" line at the end.

Hopefully issuing an "isapnp /etc/isapnp.conf" will now make the modem
visible. If not you probably need to tweak the serial port settings with
"setserial" too. (man setserial)

hth,
Chris

Yes, that's a very basic setup. Linux can install to and boot from the
2nd drive without disturbing Win95 on the first drive. It's not so easy
the other way around, although it can be done.

Linux comes with a boot loader (Lilo) that can be set up to dual boot
and give you a choice when you boot up. Most distributions will help you
set that up during the installation by asking which operating systems
you want to add to the Lilo menu.
The installation manual for your distribution should also cover this
topic.

If you have a CD-RW in Win98, and you're already using it to
burn CDs, just burn that ISO image (named install.iso, IIRC) to a CDR or
CDRW, and off you go. just be sure to create your boot and root disks
before you install.

Subject: how to boot a bootable cdrom from lilo?
Date: Mon, 31 Jul 2000 23:07:10 GMT

Hello,

Is it possible that you can load a bootable cdrom (like RH 6.2 or Win98)
from the lilo prompt? Wich parameters can you give in the lilo.conf file so
that lilo:
1. won't see the drive (like /dev/hdc) as a disk-drive so that he don't fail
on the geometry probing when running lilo -v
2. has the correct parameters like cdrom-layout and partitioning of the
cdrom.

Can lilo provide this functionality and if yes, how to configure it? Did
somebody ever did this or is this beyond the possibility of the lilo?

thx,

Bart

Subject: Bah. Humbug. (Was: Can I get some modem help?)
From: Kelli Halliburton <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Date: Mon, 31 Jul 2000 16:06:39 -0700

Apparently my external USRobotics 28.8 modem is either fried, or
has stored some configuration string from being used with my
Amiga and the Miami TCP/IP stack which renders it unusable to my
PC under any operating system.

The only other modems I have are internal modems which feature
speakerphone functionality (thus making them 95% probable
WinModems) -- one a Zoom 14.4, and the other a Creative Labs
Modem Blaster v.90. ARGH! I know I can't use those for Linux.
So, I'm stuck either having to scrounge up another external
modem or installing Windows.

By the way, I did the latter, momentarily, as a matter of
testing my external modem. I installed Windows 3.1 on top of MS-
DOS 6. These are currently the only MS products I have in the
house. I discovered that the older MS products don't play havoc
with the master boot record the way Windows95/98/NT do. So, as
an interesting little side effect, if I don't have a bootable MS-
DOS disk in the floppy drive, control gets passed to the old
LILO from Storm Linux. This LILO, since it sits on the MBR, was
never erased, and tries to start Linux if left alone. Of course,
trying to load kernel modules that don't exist creates a kernel
panic and stops the load attempt.

Thus I can't boot directly into Windows 3.1 from the hard drive,
and besides, the WinModem drivers require 95/98. So even Win3.1
is not a workable alternative at the moment, not that it ever
was a *viable* alternative. NT? Maybe... there's a driver for
the Zoom modem that I might be able to try.

So, as I said before, either I scrounge up another external
modem and reinstall Linux, or I install Windows. And since I
need 95/98 for the 56k or NT for the 14.4, and I don't have any
of the above, I'm scrounging for that too. Sigh. I guess I just
need to save up. (Insert reference to obscure stand-up comedian
here.)

This is not really a request for help; it's more like an update
on the trials and tribulations of a fledgling geekgrrl. :) But
if you have any tips or hints, it'd be great if you told me....

What software are you using to record CD-Rs?

You should refer to the documentation that came with your software or search
the company's website.

If you are using Easy CD Creator 4(or a previous version) all you need to do
is select the menu option "Create CD from CD image" from the file menu.
Then change the "Files of type" drop-down menu from "CD image file *.cif" to
"ISO image file *.iso" and you are ready to go.

btw, why did you choose Slackware?

: CDRW, and off you go. just be sure to create your boot and root disks
: before you install.

if your system supports booting from CD(pretty sure Slack 7.1 is bootable),
you can save time(and a floppy) by booting the CD, assuming you are going to
install lilo.

Thanks for your reply.

There are various shares and some are public without any "valid users=".
The shares are not the problem. It's the fact that the win9x users can't
login to samba to browse the shares unless I setup a linux & samba account
for every one of them. Maybe that is why the "map to guest = " option was
created.

Cheers,
Ross.

Maybe under Windows. If you look at the tests that I've done, they're
not affected by amount of RAM. The problem is the speed of the CPU
talking to the RAM, not some fuzzy overall machine performance.

> One thought - is SMP still compiled into the
> kernel?

Different stock RedHat 6.2 kernels; same kernel version; one with, one
without.

I've a third machine, a signle P-II/400 128MB RAM ASUS P2B-D that gives
very similar numbers to the SMP machine. Other than CPU/motherboard,
this machine is essentially identical to the problem child.

This should put the SMP nonsense to rest. Next time I'll not mention
that machine. Geez....

Greetings All!!

I'm trying to install RH6.2.

When I get to the DiskDruid, no matter what I do, I end up with one
partition that can't be allocated - the message says boot partition to big.
I've tried 'assigning' partitions in various orders and varying the sizes,
but one still ends up unallocated with a message that says boot partition to
big.

I have a 14.3 Gb drive - 10.1Gb for Win98 and 3.2 Gb for Linux. The Linux
'space' is at the back of the drive so I'll have to use LoadLin vs. LILO

I could really use some help - I would like to give Linux a fair try. I've
tried reading and searching as much as possible, but I can't quite put it
all together.

Please feel free to respond directly to my email below...

Thanks in advance.

I am setting up a test lab of a dozen workstations on my lan, and need some
information. I have built a couple of workstations for some more advanced
winblows users and they are quite excited by what they have seen Linux do for
them. I now want to roll out a larger test, so I am working with our training
department to convert our training lab for current empoyees to Linux
workstations (when I took over in this position I had to first start a
migration to a managed desktop, now that the hardware is straightened out I
need to get WInblows off of the desktop). I have built a very clean desktop
for the standard users and want to create a link to an intrannet page I have
put together that will reflect some very basic commands they will use everyday.
I want to use the Red Hat Shadow Man icons for this link but I can't seem to
find them in the usual icon folders. I know that they can be got at because I
have seen then used in a number of KDE themes, but where are they? A simple
question, but I hope someone can help?

You might try telling us what result you _did_ get. My first guess is
that you don't have DNS configured right, only because that is the

Hey everyone....I know I have seen this question asked many times in the

When I had Win98 on my box I was able to set the resolution to 1024x768,

I too have purchased a Dell 4100 (w/45G ATA-100

(in text mode as RH 6.2 didn't like my Dell M990

the /boot or root partitions.

I started with Win98 as well on one big 45G
partition. I resized the Win98 FAT32 partition
to 10G and left the other 35G FAT32 for Redhat
6.2. I used FIPS 2.0 to resize the partition.
Tested Win98 still worked, then tried the RH6.2
install with above problem. Then tried deleting
the 35G FAT32 partition and installing RH6.2
again with identical results.

I'm kind of wondering if our problems are related.

Here's the response from Redhat on the subject:

Sorry, but the ATA-100 interface is not yet
supported by us, although I would suggest that
you goto www.dell.com and use linux and support as
your keywords for the search box on their home
page. See if Dell has either drivers or notes and
errata on setting up ATA100 type controllers.
Check out your other devices, too. Closing this

I too have purchased a Dell 4100 (w/45G ATA-100
drive) and when I attempted to partition the disk
(in text mode as RH 6.2 didn't like my Dell M990
19" & ATI Rage 128 Pro), I get partition too big
messages (I think it's Linux fdisk). It will
allow a swap space to be defined, but not
the /boot or root partitions.

This isn't as tough as it appears from the documentation, but you should
*really*
heed the advice at www.sendmail.org about using the m4 macro processor and
the corresponding configuration "source" files rather than trying to get
/etc/sendmail.cf
right all by yourself. The things I had to add to the redhat.mc file were:
   define (`LOCAL_RELAY')
   MASQUERADE_AS(some.domain)
   MASQUERADE_DOMAIN(some.domain)
   feature(masquerade_envelope)
Having compiled a new sendmail.cf from this altered .mc file,
I then needed to put the right lines in /etc/sendmail.cw (one for each
domain you
masquerade as), and had to fill in /etc/mail/relay-domains

Good luck
