You have to write a /etc/auto.master file in which you describe each one
of your mount points you want autfs to mount:

/etc/auto.master file:

/home   yp auto.home
/mnt    /etc/auto.home1

When you want to go in /home, your system consults your NIS map (called
here auto.home).

When you want to go in /mnt, your system consults the file
/etc/auto.home1

/etc/home1 file:

*       -nosuid,intr,noquota    &:/export/home1

* to mount any directory in /home1
& to use any machine

I am sorry fot my bad english, I hope that I helped you. You can see at

I think it will be more clear that my english...

any ideas how to fix it... I've removed and reinstalled the gcc

Please don't tell me I gotta go back to VC++ 6.... I like the IDE but
hate coding for Winbloze.

You can do two things easily (and I strongly recommend them):

(a) upgrade your compiler to 2.95.2 (it's the latest version, AFAIK)

(b) rewrite your program to comply with the Standard:

#include <iostream>

int main() {
  float x;
  std::cout << "test";
  std::cin >> x;
  return 0;
}

There is a trick: the Standard requires that cout and cin are placed
in the std namespace. G++ doesn't do that unless you tell it to:

$ g++ -fhonor-std test.cc -o test

That should make it work OK.

Unsupported graphics hardware, perhaps. You can always do the installation
in text mode. However your real problem will then occur later if you can't
configure x-windows for this particular version of hardware.

I use 3c59x.o to drive the 3c509B nic, and I didn't know I'm supposed to
get problems with that. 3COM, however, have their own source for a driver
for this NIC, which you can download and compile.

Be sure, though, that you set PnP OS to off or the PCI cards won't be
configured properly.

You can't actualy disable PnP on PCI cards; in fact, it is vitaly important
that the PnP facility in the BIOS is ENABLED, meaning you set the option
PnP OS to NO. On some systems there is a separate setting to cause the
BIOS to re-configure the PCI configuration, which you should also invoke.

... if you have a library that puts cout and cin in the namespace std,
like e.g. libstdc++ 2.90.8.  With the off-the-shell g++ 2.95.2 you
get:

MLO@mlinux 34 $ cat test.cc
#include <iostream>

int main() {
  float x;
  std::cout << "test";
  std::cin >> x;
  return 0;
}
MLO@mlinux 35 $ g++ -fhonor-std test.cc -o test
test.cc: In function `int main()':
test.cc:5: `cout' undeclared in namespace `std'
test.cc:6: `cin' undeclared in namespace `std'
MLO@mlinux 36 $

BTW, the "return 0;" is redundant; the standard states that this is
the default.

Depends on where you wan't the lilo loader to go.
boot=/dev/sda -- lilo is installed in the MBR of the first SCSI disk
boot=/dev/sda1 -- lilo is installed in boot sector of partition 1.

The latter only works if you have a loader already installed in MBR.
If that loader is the normal Microsoft DOS loader then you need to
make partition 1 active.

You have your modem set to COM1
You enable the built in COM1 on your mobo
seems like linux will be talking to the on-board com1 rather than the modem.
Try enabling COM1 in cmos but reassign the I/O so it becomes COM3. That
should prevent Windows from trying to shift stuff. Meanwhile in Linux, you
"should" be able to talk to the modem through /dev/ttyS0 if you do the above

Are you talking about "hard drives" = hard disk or an entire
machine (PC) ? In the first case, you have only one video card
and one connector to plugin the keyboard, so....
In the second case there are a number of switch to connect
multiple machines to one keyboard/video/mouse. From 2 up to
10 machines. Buy which is the best for you.

BTW, this is not a linux question...

Indeed. Some of my coworkers use Outlook, and I always cringe
when I read the wrong/contradictory/meaningless timezone
information that it attaches. (E.g., despite the fact that
Daylight Saving time is in effect right now, it insists on
claiming that the US Pacific time zone is 8 hours behind UTC
for current times.)

> i let windows think i live in greenwich
>england without daylight savings time.

Tell it you live in Casablanca, Morocco. Since 1986, Morocco
has been continuously running at a zero offset from UTC, and
because of the Bogart/Bacall movie it seems like a more
entertaining lie. Or perhaps you'd prefer to "live" in
Timbuktu, Mali? (Timbuktu has been at GMT+0/UTC+0 since 1912.)

(Countries in the western bulge of Africa have a tendency to run
at UTC+0, and countries in the tropics tend to not observe any
form of daylight saving time, so a map of the west coast of
Africa can give you some other ideas as to where you could "live"
while you use windoze.)

If you have a lot of empty spaces into the hard disk, you can create
a file using dd, then "formatting" it and using as additional swap
space.

dd if=/dev/zero of=<path>/swap count=60 ibs=1M

this create a file named swap into <path> of 60Mb, and fill it with
0.

Then you can use mkswap to create the Swap space into the newly
created file, and addswap to add the swap file to the swap spaces.
