I had a similar problem. My IDE controllers blew out and corrupted my
superblocks, same error - bad magic number, etc. I did A LOT of
reading of the ext2 filesystem and went in to repair the hard drive
with 'ext2ed'. It turns out that all of the superblock values were
reset to 256 because of the failure.

I fired up ext2ed on the bad disk, fixed all of the numbers, wrote the
changes and exited. Then I ran and fsck.ext2, many many thousands of
errors later, my disk and data were restored. I'd say that I was damn
lucky in that I got back 95% of my data.

WARNING: you can totally hose your disk using ext2ed.

My resources for this were.
- ext2ed-0.1-20

Docs by - Gadi Oxman, [EMAIL PROTECTED]
- EXT2ED - The Extended-2 filesystem editor - User's guide
- The extended-2 filesystem overview

Sorry, I don't have the URLs for the docs. Good Luck!

There is a special distro, called SuSE mail server II, which can do what
you want, it uses apache/SSL and forces client verification for
security.

Have you tried running fetchmail with the "-s" option (for silent

Eric,

Thanks for your input.. I will give it a shot and let
you know..

The Partinfo looked slightly more readable before the
post ;) Here is the stuff ordered differently.

The second parition for /boot is already of type
Linux Ext2.. I will try changing the third partition's
type from Ext to Linux Ext2 and see what happens

OK, I ran LILO from a floppy because the linux partition on my disk falls at
about 12GB, too large for my BIOS to boot to it...

The disk is (physically) buggered. No, I don't have a rescue disk, but I do
have another functioning Linux machine and windows 98 on the machine with
the buggered disk.

I also have a boot disk (unnecessary) for the other machine. The two
machines run (very) different systems, the unbootable one is Redhat 7.0 the
other is Redhat 5 WITHOUT the 2.2.2 kernel update. Is there any way I can
rebuild my LILO disk?

Thanks

The command
 /sbin/lilo -b /dev/fd0
should rebuild your LILO boot diskette

You could also
  cd /usr/src/linux
  make bzdisk

and get a non-lilo boot diskette
