I am going to attempt to install win98 and linux red hat 6.2 on a 8.4 WD
HDD. I have split the WD and made 2 partitions. If I let linux go into the
MBR..... If i decide I don't want a dual boot then is it easy to get LILO
out of the mbr? what actions would have to be taken to remove it? Thanks for
your time in advance, boiski

Under DOS (or Windows):
fdisk /mbr
This resets the mbr and thus removes LILO.

Okay, I've spent the afternoon trying to get my multi screen setup to
work, but it just will not.
Individually, each of my video cards and screens are working just
fine. Whenever I try to boot with the two of them enabled tho,
everything locks up (no keyboard, no mouse, ...) and I can see a
beautifull dump of my last screen.
I've installed Enlightenment 'xinerama aware', and always start x with
startx -- +xinerama, and configured my XF86Config in the proper
fashion. Anybody knows what's going wrong? Is there some kind of
conflict between GeForce and Matrox Millenium2? Or is that line wrong:
Screen "Screen0"
Screen "Screen1" RightOf "Screen0"
?
If anybody has any insights, I'd really like to hear from you.

Hello everyone,
I have problems getting the ftp-proxy V 1.5 started.
DestinationPort 21
DestinationTransferMode client
Group nogroup
Listen 192.168.1.20/192.168.1.200
PidFile /var/run/ftp-proxy.pid
Port 1021
ServerRoot /var/ftp-proxy/rundir
# (Here I get an error: TECH-ERR can't chroot to /var/ftp-proxy/rundir)
Well, that's right it's running as ftpproxy and not as root
ServerType standalone
TimeOut 900
User ftpproxy
ValidCommands ABOR,PASS,PASV,STOR,USER,MODE,QUIT,SYST
As Client I use WS-FTP Pro V6.01.
Here I enabled the firewall with the server as a host (192.168.1.2, Port
1021)
Whicht FirewallType should I take?
Any hints?
Michel.

As is business hardware, and you'll notice the computer hardware market
is rather price-sensitive!
Tax laws vary from one country to another, but in the ones I'm familiar
with, 100% of business expenses are tax deductible, and typical marginal
corporate tax rates are around 50%, so the public at large ends up paying
50% of the cost (as a tax deduction from govt revenue), and the business
ends up paying the other 50% of the cost. 50% of the cost difference
between (say) a fully loaded-up Microsoft Windows 2000, and Red Hat
GNU/Linux, multiplied by the number of computers in a large corporation,
is a rather substantial chunk of cash.
That said, the cost advantages of free software are even more dramatic
for small users. Having worked around a number of small businesses as
both employee and contractor, I can assure you that tight cash-flow
positions are _very_ common, so the difference between
(a) cheap PC + free software, and
(b) cheap PC + Microsoft software,
matters a lot.
>It only matters to the free beer drunken college geeks who zero real
>income, and too much free time on his/her hands.
To switch every university-owned PC in the building in which I'm sitting,
from Red Hat GNU/Linux to (say) Microsoft Windows 2000, would cost
considerably more than our annual computer hardware budget.
You might also consider non-profit organizations, and those in countries
less wealthy than your own, for whom $200 for software may be a _huge_
cost.

Closer. But not quiet yet...
I installed Bero on both slackware machines, and almost everything
is working.
I can ftp from Windows to either machine.
I can ftp from the old slackware 3.5 to 7.1
I CANNOT ftp to the older slackware 3.5 box. Same problem.
It says connected, but never shows the splash message.
Then it times out.
It MAY have something to do with the FTPACCESS file, but
I can't find out what "their" interpretation of an "addrglob" is.
I've fed it
192.168.2.0
192.168.2.
0.0.0.0
*
*.*.*.*
etc...
It doesn't seem to make any difference.
Can anybody contribute, or point me in the right direction

I'm looking for a cdrom driver for a MKE (panasonic) Model: CR-563-B.
I've looked at linhardware.com and panasonic's website and have found

When you want to run some X-Software on another UNIX machine, you shouldn't
have any problems. Try starting up X on your client. Open a xterm and enter
the following line:
xhost +<fully qualified domain name of the server>
This enables the server to connect to the client.
Now switch to the server (e.g. using ssh or telnet). There you have to type
<name of the program> -display <ip of the client>:0.0
Now your program should start on your client machine. Remember: X is a
network-transparent architecture!
Hope to have helped you.

I personally use "vic" ("The MBONE VIdeo Conferencing tool"); it
supports several video standards, and multiple connections...
Look for "video conferencing Linux" in altavista, you'll probably run
into it. Try to find a binary (I didn't manage to compile the source
code - a lot of C errors (after I solved a bunch of 'em I gave up...)
and even some missing files - maybe I had an incorrect package, dunno).
The binary is easier anyway.

I can't seem to get my Kingston EtheRx VP 10/100 ethnet card to work

Thanks in advance.

help you but the latest version of the software appears to handle
non-windows partitions better then the old version.

I had problems with my kingston card being found on any linux distro, works in solaris

To fix it, I just download the DOS software for the card, found out what the DMA and IO
were for the card, and then plugged those into the module options. Then it worked
fine.

Subject: Re: Win NT + Linux in a 20GB HD
Date: Sat, 05 Aug 2000 18:27:41 GMT
I'm new to this multi-boot situation, but here is what I have on my 15.3G
harddrive so far:
Partition Description
Dos/Win98 I setup a FAT partition of 1.5g using the DOS fdisk program
and first installed DOS and then installed Win98.
Afterwards I installed
Partition Magic 5.0. With PM I setup the remaining
partitions.
Spare This partitions is currently unnamed may use in the future
for
boot mgr and is only 10MB.
The following are logical partitions in an Extended Partition:
===================================================================
NT-Office This partition is for WinNT and the MS Office Pro suite.
This partition is 2G and was setup as a FAT format. I
booted the pc
to the DOS c:\ prompt and did the NT install to put the
boot files
to this partition. NT then changed the format to NTSF.
NT-Apps This partition is for WinNT and pc programming languages (3G).
I booted the pc to Win98 and in PM I copied the NT-Office
partition
to the NT-Apps partition. The partition was original
setup as 2G but
with PM I was able to resize it to 3G. Then back in Win98
I edited
the "Boot.ini" file to list the new partition.
NT-Web This partition is for WinNT and web programming languages (3G).
I repeated the steps for setting up the NT-Office
partition (the PM
copy feature did not work here, NT would not boot, I think
the
problem was that you had to replace the word "multi" with
"scsi"
in the "Boot.ini" file). After the setup was finished in
Win98 I
resized the partition to 3G.
I am using the Windows NT loader and I can boot to the following: DOS, Win 98 and
to the three different version of WinNT. Now I trying to figure out how to setup
Linux in the remaining space in the extended partition. Also with PM I pretty
sure you can setup your NT partition to be > 8G.
Hopes this helps.

Tax deductable does not mean tax credit. If a business pays tax at a
marginal rate of 30%, then even if this is true they still pay 70% of
the cost. But I suspect that this is fanciful anyway.

No it means you should upgrade to their even hotter model, the Annoyance
Irritation Newbie 1989
Maybe it's called the Rage Fury because that's what you'll be feeling after
trying to use it, and Xpert because you'll have to be to get it to work?

I just saw on the ATI website that they're also coming out with an even
higher-end model, the user-friendly Jock Itch XL12. I am going to wait in
the parking lot for CompUSA to open so I caqn be the first to get one.
