The "performance pro modem" is USR's PCI hardware modem.
I use an external modem - a USR model 5686-02. I think the current model
number of this one is now 5686-03. No matter what the dash number is I
would recommend the USR model 5686 without hesitation.

Take it from a person who has been there before.
Next time unplug ALL drives except the one you want to install to. I went
to upgrade my PC to Win2K and overlaid the boot section to my existing OS
(ouch). Now every time I install a new OS I only have one hard drive plus
the CDrom drive connected to the mother board.
I know this is to late for you but hopefully it will help others avoid
wiping out their main OS while doing a 'simple' dual boot upgrade.

/etc/ntp.conf on my server:
server 128.252.135.4
server 128.206.12.230
driftfile /etc/ntp.drift
Note that you probably don't want to use those servers, they are in
Missouri.
/etc/ntp.conf on a client
server 192.168.0.5
driftfile /etc/ntp/drift
Mox nix whether you are using xntpd or ntpd, same conf files.

You can get that sound chip to work with a little effort. First be sure
that PnP OS = NO in your BIOS.
Next, after reboot, execute
# lsmod
and see if via82cxxx_audio module is loaded. If not, then
# modprobe via82cxxx_audio
Now, does the sound work? It should. Perhaps execute
# aumix -v100 -w100 or bring up a graphical mixer and increase the
level of your sound and pcm.
If the sound quality is good, you're fine. If sound quality sucks then you
will want to install the ALSA drivers http://www.alsa-project.org and that
takes too much typing to give you the entire procedure. Read the NOWTO.

Date: Wed, 30 May 2001 00:50:08 GMT
Hello !
Am not able to append to an archive on tape. Using the command:
tar cvf /dev/st0 file1
writes the file1 to the tape. It can be seen using the command:
tar tvf /dev/st0
Using the command:
tar rvf /dev/st0 file2
seems to do something, file2 pops up on screen but
tar tvf /dev/st0
shows that only file1 is on the tape.
file2 does not seem to be written on /dev/st0
Thanks for any help.

You are probably SOL WRT the ISA slot on a good MB. After reading
anandtech's review of KT133 MB's, I bought the only one which they couldn't
crash, the Microstar (MSI) K7T Pro 2A and have been extremely pleased with
it. Absolutely stable.
I run Solaris and FreeBSD on this system, too, and the MB is stable with
them also. Since I follow FreeBSD-STABLE, about every 2 weeks I make world
which involves compiling about 300MB of code in one session. Have yet to
see a 'make buildworld' fail with signal 11 on this system.

If you want a telnet server on your machine then install it. CD 1, telnet
and telnet-server. It is not installed by default because it is a security
nightmare when the machine is connected directly to the internet.
Learn how to use SSH and forget about telnet and ftp.

As far as building alsa-drivers using the RedHat kernel is concerned,
forget about it. The kernel has been modified so much that the drivers
will not build.
Download the 2.4.4 kernel (not 2.4.5), build and install it. Configure
/etc/lilo.conf, /sbin/lilo and reboot. Now build the alsa-drivers and you
will succeed.

I use an IBM PCI modem - model number 33L4618. I've had it for nearly two
years and never had a problem.
I think there's a lot of nonsense talked about PCI modems. There are quite
a few real modems out there and they have the noce advantage that they are
out of sight, out of mind, and don't add another brick to your power board.

I remembered what I did to fix it last time! I moved it from the system
with the motherboard that is in the current system it doesn't work in - an
ABIT BP6 - to a system with an ASUS P2L97. I don't know what IDE chipsets
these use, buy I'm betting they use different ones. I guess I'm screwed as
far as getting it to work on the BP6...
