Try going into /etc/passwd and deleting everything from the user123's

Hmmm? Ok, you can get a boot disk from here that will get the system up
so that you can make repairs. I haven't used it so don't know what all
is involved in using it.

Subject: LILO dual-boot problem
Date: 02 Jan 2001 16:03:24 -0700
I have a problem with LILO that I hope someone can help me with.
I installed Mandrake 7.2 on my dad's computer yesterday so he now has
a nice dual-boot Win98/Linux box. Unfortunately, we can't get Linux
to boot from the hard disk. The problem is that when the LILO prompt
comes up with Windows and Linux selections, the up/down arrow keys
don't work. As such, I can't select from the LILO menu, and the box
boots into the Default OS. Luckily, I created a boot disk, so we have
to boot Linux via floppy right now, but I want to fix this problem.
I don't know why the keyboard is non-functional at the LILO prompt.
The keyboard works fine once he's booted into Linux or Windows. He
has a USB keyboard.
We also have another problem in that when he boots into Linux, and
then boots into Windows, the display is hosed and Windows boots into
safe mode. If he then exits out and reboots into Windows, the box
boots fine. I don't have a clue how to fix this.
Has anyone encountered similar problems to these or know how to fix
them?
Thanks,
Aaron

Files in HTML should have the extension .html Otherwise the webserver
considers them by default plain text.

Subject: Have a newbie question
Date: Wed, 03 Jan 2001 00:16:22 GMT
Greetings. I have a question to ask regarding my hardware and linux (I
am a linux neophyte), If I am not in the right forum, I apologize and
please point me to the proper one. Just recently, I looked at the
Software titles in my software store and found a bunch; RH, Mandrake,
Suse and others. I read the spec's on the boxes, but they are vague
and I know Linux is particular about hardware. I have two systems which
I will do my best to spec out below and am wondering what I can expect
if I try to install one of these on one or both of these systems. Any
opinions on which linux Distribution is best for a newbie would be
greatfully appreciated as well. Thanks in advance from a newbie.
System 1:
Pentium II MMX (233 mhz)
Award Bios
96 meg memory
Tatung 24x Cd-rom
30 Gig Western Digital HD
Ess sound card
Cirrus Logic 548x Video Card (agp-4 meg video)
Lt 56k winmodem
Ctx PL7 17" monitor
Umax Astra 610p scanner
Hp 820 (ces) inkjet printer
Note: On this system, to get the full 30 gig recognized as one hard
drive, had to use "bios extender" software from Western Digital.
System 2:
Dell Netplex 486 (25 mhz-don't laugh)
32 meg memory
8x cd-rom (don't have the mfg info at this writing)
SB compatible sound card
ATI Graphics Pro Turbo video card (2 meg video memory)
Generic 33.6 modem (don't think it is a winmodem as I set the jumpers)
Quantum 4.3 gig HD
HP Officejet 630 (all in one unit-actually works very well..)
Note: On this system, I put in the 4.3 gig drive and had to use, for
lack of a better description, "bios extender" software from Quantum in
order to get the system to recognize the drive as 4.3 gig.
Any advice/tips/don'ts/do's/etc. on the hardware and a version of Linux
would be sincerely appreciated. Again, thank you.

Subject: was : problems with xcdroast
Date: Wed, 03 Jan 2001 00:49:23 GMT
Hi !
xcdroast is now working OK on my system. Indeed, it did work from the
beginning, only I didn't know it did.
What happened ?
What got me confused were those error messages : "TOC of impossible
length", and, later on, while running "Verify Burnt CD" : "copy differs
from image at block 17". Always at block 17, each time, for each new
trial ! That made me wonder, therefore I started watching things more
closely...
[mode wondering on]
Oh ! what the hell is that ? The name of cdrom device for burnt cd
verifying, does not match that of my cd roaster ! But, for Heaven's
sake... that name is that of my OTHER cdrom reader !!!
[mode wondering off]
>From there on everything started getting clearer ! I had taken it for
granted that the checking process would operate from my cdroaster, as it
did when using my Windows 3.1 driver ! Upon understanding my mistake,
I removed the burnt cd from cdroaster and put it in cd read only
driver... started a new "verify burnt cd", and got "no errors" ! I
got the TOC error messages whenever there was nothing in the appropriate
cdrom drive for verifying ; I got : "copy differs from image at block
17" when said cdrom drive was mounted and had a cd in it, but it was
just any cd, not the just burnt one.
So, I am now able to burn CDs under Linux environment, using xcdroast
0.96e, saving Linux files in Rock Ridge format, which was not possible
when using my Windows driver. I saved my files at speed X4, while I had
to remain with speed X2 under Windows. I surely spent a lot of time
before I found my mistake in using xcdroast, but it is not fully wasted
time, since it gave me the opportunity to read a lot of docs on burning
CDs, therefore learning a lot on my system. From now on, if something
fails, I am likely to have a better idea about what is wrong...
Thanks for the advices, an Happy New Year to everyone.

I installed Mandrake 7.2 in a motherboard Tekram with VIA KX133
Tekram use North Bridge VT8371 and South Bridge VT82C686A and Live MP3
worked perfectly.

If you boot once again from the install
CDROM, you can select update. Then it'll
give you a screen where you can pick the
packages you needd to add. If you pick
the gcc compiler (for example) it should
notify you of what associated packages
the compiler will need. You tell it "yes"
and it will install (supposedly) everything
you need.
rpm is supposed to know enough to satisfy
all the dependencies of each package.
It usually works pretty well.

My system is just the same size as yours

Thats something I hadn't tried at all, I use xmms for all that, and with

Thats a pretty darned good description, Bill.
Part of my problem is that I tend to only dig into what has immediate
utility for me, or possibly at the tv station. The other part is of
course the limited number of hours in a day that I can honestly say that
what I do is a learning experience, at 66 they seem to be getting
scarcer, which is at times quite frustrating.

Subject: Partitioning 20G disk for C:, D: and linux
Date: Wed, 03 Jan 2001 03:20:05 GMT
[NOTE: I found a workaround to my problem, which is described at the end.
But I thought I'd complete this post, since I already had it written up &
ready to send. Thought I'd see if anybody could shed some insight on what
might have been going on.]
OK - I'm having problems setting up a 20GB disk for Win95 and linux. My goal
is thus:
Partition 1: linux boot partition (type 83) (size: 88M)
Partition 2: Win95 drive C: (type 0Ch) (size: 7.6G)
Partition 3: Win95 drive D: (type 0Ch) (size: 7.6G)
Partition 4: Extended part'n (type 5) (size: remainder of drive)
The extended partition would contain the following logical drives:
Logical 1: linux swap (type 82) (size: 196M)
Logical 2: linux /tmp (type 83) (size: 196M)
Logical 3: linux /var (type 83) (size: 196M)
Logical 4: linux /usr (type 83) (size: remainder of ext. part'n)
I used RedHat 7.0's fdisk (not druid) to set up the partitioning as
described above.
Here's my problem: I just cannot get the Win95 D: drive to format correctly.
After partitioning, I booted a Win95 boot diskette to COMMAND LINE and used
Win95's command line 'format' command. C: formated fine, including transfer
of system files. But when I format D: it aborts after about 90% of the way
through, complaining of a bad partition table.
Also, I tried aefdisk to do the formatting (not the partitioning) using the
'/formatfat' option. It bombed out as well.
I kept the C: and D: sizes at 7.6G to insure that I kept well below the 8G
limit. I had attempted 8G drives previously, but wasn't sure whether
'+8000M' in linux fdisk meant something greater than 8G (eg, 8000M =
8000*1024*1024 > 8,000,000,000), so after a few attempts I played it safe by
specifying '+7600M' in linux fdisk. I always deleted ALL partitions between
attempts, but could something have been left over???
.. LATER ...
OK .. I found something that worked. I booted to the Win95 GUI, then opened
an MSDOS command window and ran the format of D: from there. It worked under
Win95 GUI, but not under Win95 booted to MSDOS mode via boot diskette.
Any comments/insights on what I was trying to do are appreciated.
=> Bonus question! If I want FAT32 drives for C: and D:, should I select
partition type '0Ch'? That is defined as "Windows 95 with 32-bit FAT (using
LBA-mode INT 13 extensions)" NOTE: My AMI BIOS is dated 7/15/95, and
'supports' LBA (at least, it _mentions_ LBA in the BIOS setup screen, so I
assume it can do LBA translation).

Well, you don't need to mount your drive in order to use an audio CD, so if
you're doing that, then you're going to have a problem. This is because
there really is no file system on an audio CD, only raw digital audio.
Something to try however, is making a symlink from /dev/hdc (or whatever
device your CD-ROM is on), to /dev/cdrom. A lot of apps automatically
search for things on /dev/cdrom, so it's a good idea to have it if you
don't for some reason.

Your laptop is crashing when power saving kicks in. This could be in the
kernel in which case re-compile with advanced power saving disabled. But
more likely to be X WIndows so try switching it off in X first before we
play games with the kernel. I think you can switch off DPMS within
XF86Config or if you run Mandrake XF86Config-4. The server flags section
should look something like this:-
Section "ServerFlags"
# Uncomment this to cause a core dump at the spot where a signal is
# received. This may leave the console in an unusable state, but may
# provide a better stack trace in the core dump to aid in debugging
#NoTrapSignals
# Uncomment this to disable the <Crtl><Alt><BS> server abort sequence
# This allows clients to receive this key event.
#DontZap
# Uncomment this to disable the <Crtl><Alt><KP_+>/<KP_-> mode switching
# sequences. This allows clients to receive these key events.
#DontZoom
# This allows the server to start up even if the
# mouse device can't be opened/initialised.
AllowMouseOpenFail
EndSection
Add Option "NoPM" "yes" before EndSection. I think this will work, if not
like I said try the kernel.
Have fun!

that's because formatting doesn't touch the MBR which is where LILO is.
You have to use DOS's fdisk utility and do the following at a DOS
prompt:
fdisk /mbr
that will ovewrite the MBR of the drive with Windows boot information
thus getting rid of lilo
