Hi~
I'm using Windows 2000 and Redhat Linux 6.1.
When booting, Win2000 boot loader is used. (not LILO).
Because default setting doesn't provide NTFS, I must recompile Linux
kernel.
But, I don't know how to setup new boot image. I think that kernel and
modules are compiled right.
The problem is how to register to Win2000 Boot loader.
I remember that I registered old Linux kernel to Boot loader as 'dd
if=/dev/hdb1 of=/bootimg.lnx bs=512 count=1' and
copied 'bootimg.lnx' to hda1 (Windows 2000 drive), and edit 'boot.ini' file.
So, I've tried the same thing after compiling new kernel. But, something
wrong.
Only the cursor is blinking...
Please help me... Thank you for reading~~~

In the long run, making programs free is a step toward the post-scarcity
world, where nobody will have to work very hard just to make a living.
People will be free to devote themselves to activities that are fun, such as
programming, after spending the necessary ten hours a week on required tasks
such as legislation, family counseling, robot repair and asteroid
prospecting.

Linux is quite secure, just you have to turn them on. If you want tighter
automatic security run bastille linux after install redhat.
It will prompt you on how tightly secure to make it.
You can make lilo more secure by issuing a lilo password so you cannot change the
root password as above without the lilo password.

Just a note ---- on the 128 board. I spent the last few weeks playing with
XFree 4.0 and that board. It worked well for me only in low color, low
resoluton. Might be the Boards refresh rates or sync rates or the monitors
or a little of both. Just to save you time, if you get that board. Install
a kernal that has Framebuffer support. The kernal can be told to go into
graphics mode on boot-up. After I set that up on my machine Xfree 4.0 loved
my new128 board. (1280x1024x24bpp)

Welcome to the brave new world! Actually, it's not that much different
from a workstation setup.

Enough for a "simple" server with only a few users attatched. However
you should consider adding more RAM. The graphic card is not important,
since you don't run graphics on a file server, unless your stuck with
the M$ thing... :-)

X itself is a "memory pig", and whatever window manager you run will not
change that. But it's as simple to avoid as not starting X (boot into
runlevel 3, don't run startx).
The most popular distribution for server use is Red Hat, although the
NFS have been quite a pain in the ass since they switched fron nfsd to
kernel nfs in 6.0 and upwards (I think this have to do with the kernel
development however, and can not be blamed on Red Hat. Probably other
distributions have the same problem). Since Mandrake is more or less a
Red Hat with a little different "look and feel", I recomend you use it
as you have dealt with it before.

Hello everybody:
I use redhat6.0 and install g77 on it.
Recently i upgrade my system to redhat 6.1.
The problem comes!!
I compile the fortran code which is successfully compiled on 6.0.
It failed and showed the following message:
/lib/libc.so.6: undefined reference to `_dl_origin_path@@GLIBC_2.1.1'
/lib/libc.so.6: undefined reference to `_dl_lazy@@GLIBC_2.1.1'
/lib/libc.so.6: undefined reference to `_dl_dst_count@@GLIBC_2.1.1'
/lib/libc.so.6: undefined reference to `_dl_dst_substitute@@GLIBC_2.1.1'
/lib/libc.so.6: undefined reference to `_dl_platformlen@@GLIBC_2.1.1'
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
I have tried to use "ldconfig"
It doesn't work!!
And /lib/libc.so.6 is already linked to /lib/libc-2.1.2.so.
So.......how should i do to fix it??
Thanks.......

Hi...!
Yes, of course it was SVGATextMode to have more than 80x25 on the
console screen -- Thanks!
But, to make it sensefully usable, there's still a lot of missing
things. Available modes are not as much und not as like as I want, and
a refresh rate of 59 Hz is even worse.
Of course I've read man's, doc's and HOWTO's; I've even spent two hours
searching the web, but it seems like I'm the only guy in the world who
has a Diamond Speedstar A50 AGP and wants to configure his SVGATextMode
properly. :-I
The most essential lines from my ~/.X.err:
XFree86 Version 3.3.6 / X Window System
Operating System: Linux 2.2.13 i586 [ELF]
SuSEConfigured drivers:
SVGA:

Using XFree86 SiS driver version 3.0.0
(--) SVGA: Found 8MB board, treating like 4MB.

(**) SVGA: chipset: sis6326
(--) SVGA: videoram: 4096k

(**) SVGA: Mode "640x480": mode clock =3D 37.440
(**) SVGA: Virtual resolution set to 1024x768
In the TextConfig sample file, there _is_ a line for SiS-Chips. Below
this, one can read a commented clock line: Settings for those chips are
not known yet and should be taken from the XFree86 setup.
But I couldn't find anything. If I'm pasting hte three clock values
from above into my TextConfig, SVGATextMode complains about there
should be 16 clock values. where do I get them? Or how can I
find out, which clock chip resides on this card? Referring to the
output (1*) it seems like there _are_ programmable clocks?
Any hints?

hello !
i have installed Red Hat linux 6.2 on my system in server mode.the machine
has two lan cards.
during installation i opted for "asia/calcutta" time zone.
installation went quite smoothly.
every thing seems to be running quite fine.
there's no problem (no error) during bootup process.
But whenever i run LINUXCONF and exit from it , i get following
messages-------
1)the file /etc/inetd.conf as a revision date in the future.this probably
means that u system time is wrong or as been wrong at some point.
2)the file /etc/sysconfig/mouse as a revision date in the future.this
probably
means that u system time is wrong or as been wrong at some point.
3)the file /etc/x11/fs/config as a revision date in the future.this
probably
means that u system time is wrong or as been wrong at some point.
==================================================
what does these messages mean ? can they cause any problem ??
how to stop these messages from coming ?
i checked my bios clock settings and system time and found them to be o.k.
this problem only comes while exiting from LINUXCONF.

Date: Mon, 7 Aug 2000 10:07:14 +0100
I have Suse 6.3 on an MMX and have put Lilo in MBR with Win95 as default
boot. I think Lilo config is OK as Windows always boots OK and Linux
sometimes does. But most times I select linux boot option, after displaying
"Loading....", it either just hangs (have to reset) or restarts whole boot
sequence. The same happens when I boot from a floppy with the kernel image
(vmlinuz) dd'd to it, and with root device set to correct partition of hard
disk. I think this suggests a problem in the kernel image itself, and not
Lilo. rdev shows the following which seem right to me:
root flags 0
ramdisk size 0
offset /dev/hda7 /
swap /dev/hda6
If you can suggest anything I can do to boot more consistently, I'd
appreciate it. Unfortunately most of my stuff, including installation CDs,
etc, is in storage at the moment as I've been away for some time.

No, don't buy another disk! Geez, you have 30 Gb, that is a huge amount of
space!
The problem is that poor brain-damaged Windows can only comprehend one
primary and one extended partition per drive. This doesn't always fail, I
run a system at work that violates it and there's no problem. But in
principle it is true, and at other times when I've tried it, Windows has
seen phantom or merged partitions, or partitions that won't hold a format.
The solution is to repartition-- sorry. Keep hda1 as your Windows
partition, then put everything else into an extended partition, hda2.
(Right now you have two primary partitions, hda1 and hda2, and one
extended, hda3, containing all the others.) I suggest that you use DOS
fdisk to perform this operation, as it will enforce any limits and
partition types that Windows needs. Once that's done, use linux fdisk or
the linux installation procedure to add the linux partitions inside hda2.
By the way, some people claim that Windows also is too stupid to understand
if Windows partitions aren't all together at the front of the drive. So,
you can keep your Windows data partition, but you should probably make it
hda5 (first logical partition within hda2).
Good luck,
Andrew.

Linux isn't a PNP OS. You'll have to use the isapnptools for this
modem card to have it recognized in Linux. BTW, you'll have to disable
your COM2 port in the system's CMOS if you want the modem to be on
/dev/ttyS1 , otherwise you'll get a HW conflict.

During boot-up???
Are you attempting to automatically mount a floppy then?
Is there even a floppy in the drive during boot-up? (there shouldn't
be!)
I expect that you are trying to automount the floppy. Change /etc/fstab
to solve this (change the 'defaults' to 'noauto' in the options part).

Hi, all
Ive got a problem configuring ISDN on a red hat 6.1
installed is an avm a1 card (working)
isdn4linux and isdnconfig packages (working)
with isdnconfig I can configure different provider accounts, for each
account a file
in /etc/sysconfig/provider/conf-providername is generated.
On bootup /etc/rc.d/init.d/isdn takes these to generate and config ipppx
devices,
at the moment there are two provider accounts, so Ive got an ippp0
(working) and
an ippp1 that doesnt work, when I try " ifconfig ippp1 " up followed by an
" isdnctrl dial provider "
the ipppd complains about a not available resource / device.
When i flip the two provider files, so that the second one becomes the
alphabetically first and
restart the isdn subsys (ippp0 is now the second provider) still only ippp0
works, so the provider
config is fine. So what can be wrong? If I do an " isdnctrl list all " the
ippp0 and ippp1 settings appear
to be the same, except for numbers and names.
anybody got a hint ?
thanx,
Markus.
