okay, I'll do anything to get it to work. Where might I pick up kgcc?
But I have to say that I have learned my lesson on major version

Those two are in the 8Gb(1023 cylinder) boundary so the / (root) partition of
Linux, beying the first logical partition, sits as ordered, and behaves. The
other logical partitions can spill over this limit.

With Linux fdisk a partition was created starting AND ending on cylinder 1.
The size of disk gave this partition a volume of ~8Mb, on different disk it
will have another size.

Helps if you provide what distro and release level you are using
when you post questions to the news groups. Different distros
have different commands, files, and links to files.

        NO.

Read the last 4 lines of this post, I'll wait. . . . . . . . . . . . .

The examples here are for 128M. Change 128 to your memory value.

================= If using lilo ===========================
        edit /etc/lilo.conf and add
        append="mem=128M"
        save changes, exit the editor, then
        /sbin/lilo to install the change into the mbr.
        Next boot should have the change

example:
timeout=50
append="mem=128M"
image=/boot/vmlinuz
or
append="mem=128M hdd=ide-scsi" if you already have an append cmd

================ if using grub ===========================

        edit /boot/grub/menu.lst and add
             mem=128M
        Next boot should have the change

example:
title linux
kernel (hd1,4)/boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/hdb5  mem=128M

============== to replace lilo with grub ====================

cd /boot/grub
sh install.sh

============== Still having problems ===========================

any idea what is happening? I spent hours trying to figure this one

Hello,

Apologies if this post appears twice. I'm posting from deja since a
posting from my ISP hasn't appeared on the list after 36 hours.

I recently installed rplay and rplayd on my server and can hear mp3's
and wav files on the client.

I'm wondering if anyone has set up realplayer to work with rplay?
Following the devrplay.so documentation, I call realplayer with
LD_PRELOAD=/usr/local/lib/devrplay.so but the sound plays on the server
rather than on the client. Is there any way to include the --host=client
option when launching realplayer? Or is it possible to include the
realplayer information in the rplay.helpers file? I'm running rplay
version 3.3.2 and realplayer 7.0.

When playing wavs or mp3s I *always* have to pass the --host=client
option to rplay even if rplayd is running with --forward=client
enabled. I suspect that if I could launch rplay without having to pass
the --host option that realplayer might also play on the client.

Any pointers or suggestions? I've searched deja news, geocrawler, and
google but haven't come up with any solutions.

Thanks.

Problem is IU have no documentation.

I am running Red Hat Kernel 2.2.12-20 and have installed an HP 4-8Gig
Travan IDE Tape Drive for backup purposes. I have a Windows-95 boot on
the machine as well, and I am able to use the drive perfectly using the
Windows App supplied by the manufacturer. Under Linux, I set the
environment variable TAPE=/dev/nht0 and also made a link from
/dev/tape->/dev/nht0 and then tried to use mt to rewind and retension
the tape successfully. I was even able to write single files and small
directories to it using the command tar -cvf /dev/tape * or by copying
the file to /dev/tape. However, when I attempt larger directories, it
writes a few files and then gives me the message: tar: Cannot write
to /dev/tape followed by tar: Error is not recoverable, exiting now.
The files it writes are on the tape and can be copied back to the hard
disk, but it seems to be overrunning a buffer or something and
choaking. Any help will be greatly appreciated. If anyone can suggest
any appropriate experiments to get further information I will happily
try them.  Thanks in advance.

I installed Red Hat Linux 7 on a Dell Latitude CPx successfully, but my
Netgear FA410TXC PCMCIA card wasn't detected. I upgraded to pcmcia-cs
3.1.23, but that didn't seem to fix the problem.

When I insert the card into the slot I hear a high beep and a low beep,
which should indicate that the card is identified, but the configuration
fails. Running ifconfig eth0 brings back good results and KDE's PCMCIA
utility shows "NetGear FA410TXC Fast Ethernet" under Card 0, but
unfortuately I can't use it for some reason.

I have had no problems with a partitionless
install. Actually, you will end up with at
least two Linux partitions (one swap) in this method.
Red Hat will figure them out for you.

Purists say you should have more partitions so you
can update one part of your Linux without
destroying other parts (like, you could go from RH 7
to 7.4 sometime in the future without wiping
out your email records).

I don't care, I install new Linuxes all the
time and just wipe everything out with no
regrets. How do you feel about it?

You will need separate partitions for Linux
and for Windows if you keep them on the same
hard drive.

This is a setting that can be controlled by the httpd.conf file. It can be
set so that no directory listings will be obtained even if there is no

Hello,

When compiling kernels on RH 7 you must use kgcc not gcc. Edit the top

HOSTCC = gcc

with this line:

HOSTCC = kgcc

Or from the command line use

make CC='kgcc'

Place an entry in the resolv.conf file. This file is found in /etc. The

Look at the output of "ifconfig -a". Are there numerous RX and TX packet
errors? If so, you may have some interface configuration or equipment
problems, such as attempted full-duplex on a half-duplex-only network
segment, 100Mbps traffic on non-CAT5 cabling and the like.
