Ah ha! I finally got it!

As expected, it had nothing to do with pppd.

I was originally on IBM's dialup service. It was
sold to AT&T. Before I left, I neglected to get
the local POP number, so I called in to get it
through the touch-tone interface. After getting
routed around several times, I got the phone
number +1 304-234-6910. Today I looked online
and also found +1 304-233-4972.

Well...it turns out I needed the AT&T Business
Internet number, +1 304-234-6901. I got that
and was able to get on without any problems.

Why AT&T has 3 POP numbers here in Wheeling and
why they don't behave the same is beyond me, but
I am glad to be on with a local call now that I
have spent probably $40 ($.50/call) in local call
charges.

Sorry to have been so confused by the CHAP stuff.

Thank you for the help.

You can get a Mandrake 7.1 CD for $5 by going to your local book store and
picking up Maximum Magazine, the one with the article about XFree86 4

When attempting to install RedHat 6.0 on a new machine:

Processor : PIII-700
Motherboard: Alton MB-741LMRT (on board lan/sound/modem/etc)
Ram :128 MB (PC100 3.3v unbuffered 168pin dimm)
Harddisk : WD UltraAta/66 20.5 GB EIDE

installation attempted on 20GB and 1.0GB harddisks with same results

I keep getting to the part where it creates the filesystem and a bunch of
what looks like debugging information scrolls down the screen and then says:

<tons of hex numbers>

code : 8b 69 08 81 fd 2b 2f c3 a5 0f 85 df 00 00 00 8b 69 0c 85 ed
Aiee, killing interupt handler
unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at vrtual address at

I've tried to install RedHat6.1,RedHat6.0,Slackware7,Some no name linux that
came on the cd with the machine...

I've updated the bios to the latest version, and have run out of ideas. NT,
unfortunately, seems to load and run fine on the machine

What would cause this and how can I fix it to load Linux?

Please Help!?

You should add the command that starts your app to /etc/rc.d/rc.local, and
it should have a '&' at the end of it like:

/path/to/command &

This starts it in the background, letting you do other stuff. If you want
to stop it, just kill it's PID:

/sbin/pidof appname | xargs kill -9

This will stop the program completely -- you'll need to run
'/path/to/command &' to start it again.

If you say the BIOS and system date and time are correct, did you check the
time and date of those files you are having trouble with.
ls -l /directory/files_with_time_problem
If those files are way into the future, use a 'touch' command to change the
date/time stamp of the file to the present.
Use the following command to get more information on touch.
man touch
info touch

Subject: Mandrake install with Adaptec AHA-2940 Fails
Date: Mon, 7 Aug 2000 12:15:31 -0500

I'm having trouble with installing Mandrake 7.1 on a HP Netserver 5/100 LC.
It has an integrated AHA-2940 controller, which I guess is the OEM version
from HP. It shows as AIC-7770 when the server boots. I had Redhat Linux 6
on this server, and it worked fine, but now I want to upgrade it to Mandrake
7.1 and it's failing on the install. The server consists of 2 4GB SCSI hard
drives and one SCSI CDROM drive. I can boot fine off the Linux CD, but
after setup finds the Adaptec controller, I get a message that says 'Can't
mount and CD on /dev/scd0'. I get the same result booting from floppy. If
I boot from the network floppy and run an FTP install, setup fails when it
gets to the section on partitioning the hard drives. It tells me there is
no suitable drive on which to install.

Both drives are blank, and in fact are not even partitioned. I can boot
from a DOS floppy and fdisk the drives, and I can install NT Server with out
any problems. In fact, that's what I'm doing right now, which really
sucks!! I absolutely do not want NT on this server, so I hope somebody can
help me out here.

Thanks,

Michael

As root, (su)

First type: insmod soundcore
Then type: insmod emu10k1

If that still doesn't work, then you may want to download the latest driver
from ftp://opensource.creative.com/pub/snapshots

You will have to compile the driver. First you will have to extract the
driver. (tar xfzv emu10k1-<data>.tar.gz) (<date> being the current date)

Then you will have to go into the directory it created (cd ./emu10k1)

Then you must compile: (make install)

Try to insmod again.

Take any basic System Admin course and they'll tell you that Physical
Security is just as important if not more important than System security.

Take your box, put it in a secured environment. Add device locks or smart
cards or BIOS passwords etc to secure physical access (hopefully something
you can remember this time.) And add a closed circuit tv camera to log
physical access.

I appreciate the very detailed reply. When I ran the search I found
inetd was running. There was a question mark under th tty. Not
really sure what the tty means but there was a question mark there all
the same. OK so telnet, ftp, and pop are NOT commented out in
inetd.conf. The lines look almost exactly like what you wrote.

Here's what my server has:

ftp stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd in.ftp -l -a
telnet stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd in.telnetd
pop-3 stream tcp nowait uucp /usr/sbin/tcpd ipop3d

So everything looks good there right. So I killed the inetd and then
started it again. Before doing this when I telneted to it from
windows, The window would show the name of my site whatever.net, but
would never connect. Now it just shows "none" when I try to telnet
from Windows.

Granted after a quick restart everything is back to square one, but I
figured maybe someone out ther might be able to figure out where I am
going wrong here. Thanks everyoine, and thanks again Steve.
