Hello all,
does anyone have an idea on how to keep the correct X settings...Every 2 or
3 starts, the system won't boot X and go back to the prompt where I have to
reajust the monitor settings trough Xconfigurator...
I tried just about everything I found possible and I'm thinking of passing
some parameters at boot time trying to prevent modprob (from what I
understand) from constantly resetting the monitor...but I've no idea which
ones.
This problem arises with an integrated Ati videocard with Mandrake 7.2 or 8
Any idea would be welcomed, thaks in advance.

You need to improve case temp and/or cpu heatsink/fan. Under full
load (eg, 'cpuburn') your cpu temp shouldn't go over 55C (50 is
better). Also the temp is from an external probe. AMD says to add 10
to 20C to the probe temp to approximate the actual core temp. So your
55C could really be as high as 75C core temp even if the hs/f is
properly installed on the die. AMD4's are finally getting an internal
diode to monitor core temp. A probe (thermistor), no matter how well
placed, is just a guess.

> Anyone knows a similar tool on Linux ?

run 'dmesg' in a term, you should see a line,
         "Checking 'hlt' instruction... OK."
somewhere in the output. HLT's are a standard kernel function.

It certainly gets charged. Beyond that, I couldn't say where the money

Date: Thu, 31 May 2001 12:11:11 -0400

Hello

I have a server with Win 98 and Sygate, and a linux box (RH 7.1) is
connected to it.

For the linux box, I am using DHCP, and set DNS, Gateway to 192.168.0.1 (IP
for the NIC connected to the network, not to the cable modem, on the
server).

Domain is home.com since I am using @Home cable modem.

I left 127.0.0.1 in the host file, but changed the locahost.localdomain to
syng.home.com. The Nick name is still localhost.

The problem is, if the linux box is connected to the network, it's extremely
slow .. sometimes programs don't even start.

It's fast when it's not connected. Also, it doesn't get any internet
connection from Sygate.

I couldn't find any problems with Sygate because other windows systems on
the network works fine.

TCP/IP and NetBeui is installed on the Sygate server.

Does anyone have same problem?

Thanks.

An older Pentium Pro System was converted to Caldera Linux on a new, never
used 15 GB hard drive. The initial install worked fine. System was able to
boot up, etc. System stayed up 90+ days, then an old tape drive (floppy
disk controller) was removed from the system. System was shutdown, drive
removed, and then restarted. The system would not restart at that point.
It basically gets to the point of checking the hardware then goes no
further.

It acts like it is not finding the master boot record.

Anyone out there have any suggestions? Other than starting all over on the
installation.

Drive partitioned into 3 parts (main - 7 GB, swap - 1/2 GB, and second - 6
GB)
Version 2.3 Caldera Open Linux
Both Lisa and Lizard Installs have been tried
Pentium Pro 200 MHz - 128 MB RAM

Many thanks in advance!

It gets applied directly at the time of purchase.

Pfft, and miss out on the best charater editing tool around? I figure start
of learning about ":" and "/" and you can trial and error the rest! I think
i am always finding new niffty commands every day :)

But I love being able to compile code, finding errors (not that I have
ahabit of finding errors) and being able to jump straight away to that line
number with the press of a few keys! It's great! Of cause it probably isn't
the best tool for writting English Essays :)

Yeah it's funny! I have real problems in Word sometimes! When ever I want to
delete a charater I try and use "x".

Are you sure you're comparing apples to apples? Maybe lm_sensors is not
properly tuned and could show wrong numbers.

A better way would be to let the system settle down and, in both Windoze
and Linux, to quickly reboot and go see what the bios says about the
temperature. 15*C difference would not go away that fast.

No matter what, I think that the fact you don't see any time-related
decrease in temperature after you boot Linux doesn't tell anything about
its ability to run cool.

well, the ones you mention here (excepting GNOME) are what we know as window
managers, and are the responsibles of the look and feel of your desktop (icons
title bars, etc.) regarding windows operations, and GNOME is a desktop environent.
it takes charge of operations sucha as drag and drop betwen optimized applications,
file associations, common object models, etc.

yes, basically, and regarding the differences betwen window managers and desktop
environmets, GNOME can use different window managers (sawfish, wm, enlightenment)

Your CMOS settings shouldn't change if you have the computer plugged
into a power outlet, as far as I know. So my guess is a hardware problem
of some sort, the HD boot problem is probably not due to CMOS options.

After reading the realted readme file i was able to detect my wd240 with
1123 cylinder 38 head and 2 sec (?). I think that it is a strange
configuration
but the bootdisk told it to me!
The problem is that after partitioning with fdisk i type setup and after
some step he tries to format the swap
and system partition but it starts spitting out nasty messages. The author
suggest playing around but i haven't
be able to install nothing!
can someone help me. The laptop is a 386 with 2 mega expanded to 6 with a
old memory and i can't install newer
distribution because or are too large (most want 8 MB) or don't recognise my
mca hd. If i can't install linux i will
never be able to use decent progs on 386 with 37 HD!

A kernel crash would be my first guess, you might try this yourself as root,
"ps -ef > pslist", kill all processes first with SIGTERM, then with SIGKILL,
and see which process it stops on. That would be a first step, and you might
get an oops to give further info.

swap - double your RAM
root - depends on how much you want to install and if you have a /usr
partition as well.

Dear All,

This has been vexing me for some time now.

Grub Installation.

I cannot seem to get GRUB installed correctly. I have an ASUS A7V board,
with onboard ATA100 controllers. Hence, my first HDD is /dev/hde, my second
one is /dev/hdg. On /dev/hde is Windows 98 (this has no problem loading
from GRUB). Linux is on /dev/hdg.

The directory structure on my linux drive is as follows: swap, /boot, /,
/home, where /boot and / are ReiseFS. The problem occurs when I try and
boot Linux. If gets as far as VFS mounting the root partition, but then the
kernel panics with the message: Kernel Panic: VFS: unable to mount root fs.
I am currently having to boot Linux from floppy disk (not at all good!).

Any help much appreciated.

Subject: Install of SuSE 7.1 hangs in reboot
Date: Thu, 31 May 2001 20:07:04 +0200

Pretty new to linux, installed SuSE 7.1 successfully on laptop, but
problem with an old desktop. Hardware:
Pentium 100 MHz, 32MB RAM 1 GB IDE hard disk, 3Com ether net 3c905
PCI.

Installation on a clean hard disk, default values all around except
for danish keyboard, minimum system.
Installation is non graphical due to amount of RAM.
SuSE decides partitioning.
Using original CD and boot disk from SuSE.

When the installation reboots everything seems normal until message
"Starting syslog services"
after 4-5 seconds with some disk activity the screen clears and there
remains just a blinking cursor at the top left corner. Disk activity
continues for a further 5-6 seconds, but after that nothing happens,
at least not for an hour. (then I pushed the reset button).

I have tried with both the old kernel and with 2.4 - same results.
Fresh partitioning on both installs.

Booting a rescue system (floppy+CD) succeeds, but I have not found
anything on the harddisk that tells me what could be wrong ( I
probably don't know what to look after).

/etc/fstab contains:

/dev/root / etx2 defaults 0 0
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
devpts /dev/pts devpts defaults 0 0

seems a bit odd to me, but maybe just because the installation hasn't
completed?

Any ideas - how to proceed ?

can shed some light on this problem.

Thanks for any help on this...
