Just a guess..
Try uninstalling kdelibs-sound-2.0-5mdk and then install kdelibs again.
if it goes well install kdelibs-sound-2.0-5mdk again.
As per sound, are you able to use sound in any other applications
unrelated to KDE? Does XMMS works?

I am able to install all the required RPMs except for kdelibs which
gives
me the following dependecy error:
"kdelibs is needed by kdelibs-sound-2.0-5mdk"
Can anyone help me out? Btw, I don't know much about KDE, but I don't
get

`fdisk -l /dev/hda`

Thanks for the advise Eric, I thought that it perhaps sounded too good to be
true. Guess I will wait and get a copy of Partition Magic after all :-)

Subject: Dynamic Firewall Needed
Date: Thu, 04 Jan 2001 13:27:29 GMT
Hello,
I need to have a dynamic firewall. Basically I need to be able
to open up a few ports to play some DirectX games through the internet
and not leave those ports open forever. My server is currently acting as
a fileserver, webserver and IPMASQing firewall. I just need to be able
to open up the DirectX internet gaming ports and then be able to close
them up once I am finished with playing the games that I wish to run. I
have read the ipchains man page and it is not very clear at how to open
up a handfull of ports for the network and then also close those ports
up again later. I do not mind if I need to bring my internet connection
down briefly in order to setup the new rules. I just need something that
is secure and able to to be dynamically altered based on my needs. Any
help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,

I've been wanting to post on this for some time, since when
I set it up I couldn't find everything in one coherent place...
The following's based on Debian, but pretty generic.
PPP: cat > /etc/ppp/peers/provider << EOF
# These are the options to dial out to your service provider
# Please customize them correctly. Only the "provider" file will
# be handled by poff and pon.

EOF
mv /etc/ppp/{no_,}ppp_on_boot # To get ppp on boot (!)

Web proxy: proxy.homechoice.co.uk:3128 [see firewall script below]
Ftp proxy: proxy.homechoice.co.uk:3128 [see firewall script below]
Once you're connected, you can look at the signup pages (on their
internal webserver at http://www.homechoice.co.uk/signup/signup.html)
to obtain an e-mail account. This will be of the form:
SMTP: smtp.homechoice.co.uk
EMAIL: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

You can also get an IE auto-configure script from here, which you can
read in Notepad to get most of the settings that I've listed above!
Hope this helps someone! Please explain if you know anything more (or
have an explanation of the proxy's behaviour).
Richard.
P.S. Oh, and from my firewall script (with the explanation of the
comments
above - the proxy server seems to make some kind of back connection to
check you exist before doing anything for you)...

Got your response for my ADDUSER problem. I posted those comments to
the person that setup our machine and here is what he said. The one I
noticed in my lack of Linux knowledge is /etc/passwd. Where the
password is to be shown, it just puts an X, and the last two users we've
tried to add show bin/bash, whereas all the others show bin/false. We
haven't tried running pwconv yet to see it that matters or not.
Here are his responses....
> useradd NEW_USER
> su -
> <your_root_passwd>
> passwd NEW_USER
> <enter the password>
tried a variant of that, didn't seem to matter but feel free to try it
yourself.
althought I dont see how you can add the user without being root
already.
> A user created this way should at least be able to login.
we aren't doing this, you never get a 'shell' login. we are only
doing password authentication for pop3 except for administration.
> If this fails, check if /home/NEW_USER exist.
not used on your system, not an issue
> check the permissions of that directory.
again not an issue
> check if the entry in /etc/passwd is correct.
this is where the problem is, when it creates the user it does not enter
their password into the /etc/passwd file, instead of places a 'x' as if
it was trying to 'shadow' the passwd but it never makes a shadow entry
near as I can tell. So the password gets lost.
> run df.
disk free space is not an issue
> see if any partitions are filled.
nope
> Are you explicitly denying users to login?
no aside from not having a homedir or shell which they do not need for
just pop3/imap
> Check /etc/security/access.conf
default redhat 6.1 install
Any additional thoughts?

The Homechoice system also comes with an Alcatel speedtouch Home
which attaches to the set top box. You might also like to
consider installing pptp on your linux box and connecting to
the Alcatel over ethernet, bypassing the stb.

Hi.
I have tried to install Linux (SuSE 7.0) on an old IBM 704 pc server. When I
boot the Adaptec 2940 scsi controller and the Mylix 960 raid controller are
both detected, but then I get the error " no device to install to", so the
10 scsi disks can`t be seen.
What is wrong and what should be done ?

Well there might be some newsgroups touching this subject .. but ..
A two seconds search on the internet learned me :
http://www.altavista.com/cgi-bin/query?q=dynamic+DNS&kl=XX&pg=q&Translate=on
http://www.google.com/search?q=dynamic+DNS
These are services especially designed for what you need .. A dynamic DNS..
You need a little agent that tells their DNS that your IP-address has
changed and they will update it accordingly.
The reason that you need a nameserver is because of the fact that your
domainname has to be served by a server for it to have effect .. hence the
name DNS (Domain Name Service) ;)

That all depends on your chipset. The one I have is an SiS620, AGP built in

Hi there,
I have just downloaded the new Livid DVD player package but cannot get it to
compile properly although al the required libraries and programs are present
on my system.
The documentation which comes with it doesn't seem to be correct in terms of
the steps you have to take in order to get it compiled.
Has anybody had similar experiences and if yes, what did you do ?

You need the driver-disk and possibly the updates-disk.
They should be on redhat's ftp site in the updates/images directory or
on their errata page for 6.1.

When it asks if you want to add drivers at the beginning of the
installation, say 'yes'. Next, choose SCSI and finally select the

For the rest, you should place LILO in the MBR, and update LILO to a
version
of 21.4.3 or higher. boting a kernel from beyond cyl. 1024 is not
possible without
these adjustments. (Well, you could use loadlin instead)

You need to tell the SuSE installer that you have those SCSI cards.
At the beginning of the install, you should have the option of doing
so (at least that's what RedHat does).

( the root file system )
hda6 swap 128MB swap my
first swap partition
hda7 swap 128MB swap my
second swap partition
hda8 /var 200MB ext2
the "var " partition
hda9 /home 1GB ext2
Home partition that I do not format if I reisntall.
hda10 /usr 3GB ext2
All user programs go under here . Also the kernel source, the X server
system
hda11 win98Data 2GB fat32 a 2 gig
place for putting files I need quite often
hda12 Games 4 GB fat32 all
my windows games
rest of the drive is empty.
How did I do it ?
1) use partition magic 5 or higher ( Use the floppy disks ) to create the
partitions ( create hda2 as a fat32 partition- win2000 will convert it
later to ntfs). Then mark hda3 as active, reboot and install win98. As far
as it is concerned, it is being installed into a PRIMARY ACTIVE partition.
2) Set hda2 as active, and unhide hda3, ignoring all those warnings.
3) reboot, and install win2000. Don't forget to convert hda2 to ntfs.
4 ) go back into partition magic , set hda1 as active, and unhide hda2 and 3
if they were hidden.
5 ) Proceed with linux install, and when it asks you for fdisk or diskdruid,
just hit "done" and come to the mount point definition
hda1 is "/boot" and so on as indicated above.
6 ) After copying over the files, and taking care of X, it will ask you
where to put lilo .This is where a lot of beginers set themselves up for
trouble . So save yourself the hassle and put lilo into /dev/hda1 , and DO
NOT overwrite the MBR . Lilo will find win98 and win2000 partitions and
give them some labels. you are free to go in and edit them .
7 ) Finish installation.
At boot prompt ("LILO" )hit TAB . you will see
linux win2000 win98
LILO:
This is if you labeled hda2 as "win2000" and hda3 as "win98" during setup.
If you did not, you will see "dos", and "win" or something similar.
Type the label to boot that particular partition .
If something went wrong, use partition magic and set ( hda3) win98 as
active.Or if you prefer win2000, hda2 Upon rebooting, win98 (or win2000 )
will start booting up , and you never see lilo. If you want lilo back
assuming you took care of the problem using win98 (or win2000) ) , set
hda1 as active.
At this point, if you feel the need to reinstall either os ( win98 or
win2000 ) , just set the interested partition as active, and proceed with a
reinstall.
I'm using Rh 6.0 with XFree86 4.0.1 . GeForce 2MX card needs 4.0.1 with the
nvidia module from NVidia, or just get the 4.0.2 XFree86 package, save
yourself some trouble.
Since you say you're a newbie, here's some lilo help:
LILO: linux single
boots into run level 1 , with no network support , so that you can fix
problems ( sendmail hanging ? ) .
once at a command prompt,
type "init 5" to switch to run level 5, where x windows comes up.
init 3 to go to the Command line level (3) . Note that at 5, the command
line is available also .
Also while at a command prompt, ( after login, of course ) , type "startx"
to get into X .
You have atleast 5 consoles Alt-F1 to Alt-F5, on which you can log in, and
do command line stuff.
While in X, to get to console 1 , it is Ctrl-Alt-F1.
To kill the X server abnormaly ( you can't see anything!! )
Ctrl-Alt-Backspace. This will cause a core dump.
/var/log/xfree86.log is generated by 4.0 and above X servers. It might help
you in figuring out X problems.
