hello,
this may not be directly linked to linux. however we have a red hat 6.2
server in a windows 98 lan.
the win98 connects by telnet to the linux box.
we have three win98 machines in another building in a lan.
how do we use regular phone lines to connect these two lans running tcp/ip.
does anyone know of any way to achieve this without any major router or
multiplexor configuration.
does anyone know about the cnet904 device.

thank you.

There shouldn't be--I've done that very thing lots of times. It might
be that the onboard IDE controller(s) aren't quite happy, for whatever
reason, or that the CD-ROM is on its last legs. If you're not sure
about the hardware, try booting from a Linux boot floppy such as Tom's (
http://www.toms.net/rb/ ) and attempting to mount/read/write both the
CD-ROM and the hard drive(s). If errors are reported during this
process, it's likely that there's flaky hardware around.
Also, post the make/model of the IDE chipset you have and the CD-ROM
that you're using. (look in the output from dmesg.) Some older
chipsets like the CMD640 have nasty bugs. If all else fails, you can
pick up a 24x IDE CD-ROM for about $35 these days....

Subject: 45GB harddisk with old BIOS??!!
Date: 7 Aug 2000 23:35:48 GMT
Hi.
I've got a IBM 45GB harddisk IBM-DLTA307045 as /dev/hdc (at ide1) in a
pentium 200 with an AWARD 4.51 BIOS. The BIOS could not detect harddisks
greater than 8GB and there is no BIOS-update available.
Till now I had a Maxtor 10GB harddisk as /dev/hdc - for which the BIOS
detected a 8GB hdd and linux detected the 10GB harddisk.
But with the IBM 45GB as hdc the BIOS tells me "none" (no disk) and
linux (2.2.14) doesn't probe for hdc so there is'nt any /dev/hdc
available.
I think this is because the BIOS found no /dev/hdc and so linux doesn't
probe for it?!
So I tried to pass some parameters to the kernel:
"ide1=autotune hdc=autotune"
- result: the same as without thesse parameters: no /dev/hdc
"ide1=dma hdc=1024,16,63 hdc=autotune"
- (I thought linux corrects these values after successfull
probing)
- result:
...
ide: Assuming 40MHz system bus speed for PIO modes; override with
idebus=xx
VP_IDE: IDE controller on PCI bus 00 dev 39
VP_IDE: not 100% native mode: will probe irqs later
ide0: BM-DMA at 0x6000-0x6007, BIOS settings: hda:DMA, hdb:pio
ide1: BM-DMA at 0x6008-0x600f, BIOS settings: hdc:pio, hdd:pio
hda: IBM-DHEA-36481, ATA DISK drive
hdc: IRQ probe failed (0)
hdc: IRQ probe failed (0)
hdc: IRQ probe failed (0)
hdc: IRQ probe failed (0)
hdc: non-IDE drive, CHS=1024/16/63
hdd: CD-ROM CDU621-D, ATAPI CDROM drive
ide0 at 0x1f0-0x1f7,0x3f6 on irq 14
ide1 at 0x170-0x177,0x376 on irq 15
hda: IBM-DHEA-36481, 6197MB w/472kB Cache, CHS=790/255/63, (U)DMA
...
So... is it possible to somehow let linux detect (and work with) this
disk (even without the BIOS)??
Help on this would be great!
Ciao,
Knuth.

Based on that output from Lilo, it looks like you have this line in
/etc/lilo.conf:
boot=/dev/hda5 (this installs Lilo in the boot sector of /dev/hda5)
To install Lilo in the MBR, it needs to be:
boot=/dev/hda

This is done by putting the following two lines in your inittab (or
correcting an existing initdefault-entry to runlevel 3).
# default runlevel
id:1:initdefault:

Look at the IBM documentation and find out what the correct CHS and pass
the correct parameters to the kernal.
You can't fool it by giving fake CHS numbers hoping to get the correct CHS
from autoprobing.
The recent fix to the handle hard disk bigger than 32G is probably in your
kernal.
I know in the Maxtor, you can jumper the 40G so it looks like a 2G hard
drive, but it give you a new set of
CHS numbers to access the entire hard disk. See if you can do the same
thing for the IBM drive.
As a last resort, you can get a disk overlay for your IBM 45G Hard drive.
You might try the IBM website to see if you download it.
For Maxtor, I usually get the disk overlay program EZ-BIOS from their
website.

I had the same problem. The first step i took was to change myISP. Now,
I'm sure someone can offer us more information of a more
technicalnature, but even after i got it to work with the new ISP, the
daemon would die if my username was not preceeded by ELN/<username>. The
'ELN' (in my case for Earth Link Network) is some sort of code. They
should tell you this stuff, although some ISP's won't support Linux. And
by 'support' it could mean they won't talk about it OR their machine is
not compatible.
I dunno but sometimes uninstalling and installing the PPP or the TCP/IP
modules helps(hearsay).

The ?'s come from 'less' (or 'more') when it gets no input.
Which means something earlier in the pipe failed.
Seeing as it's Slackware (been there myself), I'm guessing you
need to install the 'groff' package on the ap1 disk set.

George, I use Red Hat 6.2 and also use freewwweb.com using kppp. Only
thing I can't figure out is how to dial out kppp as non-root because
when I click kppp as non root after prompting password and entering it
the dialog disappears. Anyway, yesterday I login at freewwweb.com using
pppd and the proxy server of freewwweb.com came up. I deleted all the
chat files at /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts and back again no juno web

That was the first thing I tried. Problem is, the app loads and then the
login prompt appears. I need the app to run and get hold of the console as
it needs to be displaying status to users. It has a simple GUI made with
SVGAlib. It works that way if I load it in /etc/rc.d/rc.system but then I
can't open another console and login.
I had heard somewhere that it was possible to write a script to perform an
auto login, then I could load the app in that "user's" .bashrc file. This
is what I would like but I have no idea how to pass the login and password
information via a script.
Thanks for the suggestion though.
