Pine is known not to work over NFS and the developers have publicly

install an IMAP server and read over the server, that will bring Pine up

a simple way would be, write a shell script to run the dialup script and start
netscape. then, modify your netscape icon/shortcut so that it points to that
particular script.

a simple script sample,

        #!/bin/sh
        DS="ppp-on"
        NS="netscape"
        $DS
        $NS

of course, you might need to modify it for your system.

Fine till here.

Yes, I would guess those two messages are emitted by the ltmodem driver as it
loads, although I don't know for sure. It is slightly possible that the
second line is emitted by setserial, but I don't know.

> ad1848/cs4248 codec driver Copyright (C) by Hannu Savolainen 1993-1996

Well, more driver load messages follow, so I doubt that setserial has
been invoked yet.

No .. you are mixing concepts. The kernel loads serial drivers at some
point, but I haven't seen them load here yet, and they will be talking
to the mobos hardware, not your lucent winmodem. When the serial
drivers load, then device nodes like /dev/ttyS0 will proovide access to
them from user space.

Well, it's not proof of anything .. it's just a message from the
ltmodem. It could say "hi mom!" That wouldn't be proof that it had a
mother :-).

> have been trying to tell me that the driver itself creates this device to use it

You are mixing up devices and the device special files that give access
to them. You can see what devices (i.e. drivers) are loaded by
cat /proc/devices. That'll show the majors and the driver name.
The special device files always exist (unless you are using devfs, when
they are indeed provided "just in time" when the driver loads by the
kernel).

/dev/ttyS14 is just the conventional name given to the device node with
major 62 and minor 78. But apparently the driver writers are so sure
you'll call it that that they emit a message saying "hi ttyS14!" when
the driver loads :-).

Yes, you need a kernel to load it into. (with an "e", not an "a"!)

> package is not installed?? Have any idea what this means or how I get this image

Well if it's not installed, then you'd better install it!

> installed? It may not mean anything but in /boot the kernal image that I know of

No, it looks the solution. Do

  dpkg -S vmlinuz-2.2.19pre17-idepci

to find what package it comes from. Or do

  dpkg -l kernel

(isn't it "kernel-image"?)

> I did go to linmodem.org and found my way to their mailing list and posted a

What's your problem _now_? As you would suspect, you cannot load the
driver into a kernel that it is not designed to be loaded into, so you
have to have the right kernel or the right driver! That hardly
requires you to go bother a newsgroup or mailing list.

To be specific, it requires a package that is not installed. There is
nothing unusual in not having it. The near coincidence of names with your
kernel indicates that probably the ltmodem packager has made a spelling
mistake during his packaging, or else he has also provided a kernel package
with that name that he wants you to get from him. Or (insert your own
explanation).

What problem? It looks from that that you DO have the right package
installed, so you should confirm by interrogating the database with
dpkg.

If it turns out that someone has just made a spelling error somewhere,
then you should override the complaint from dpkg with

  dpkg -i --force-depends

> question about this. Boy, oh boy, oh boy. This is fun. NOT!

On reflection, it's probably worthwhile alerting them if they do have a
typo in their ltmodem package. But I'd confirm the typo first, before
complaining, or you will look foolish.

Hi- I've been trying to setup the older libc5 libraries (and ld.so) files from
RH6.2 (the recommended solution from RH) so that I can use older programs like
WordPerfect8. After installing RH 7.0, then using GnomeRPM to install the two
files noted above from the RH6.2 CD, everything appears to go fine. I
reboot, attempt to install WP8 and get error messages from the install script.

After installing the libc5 and ld.so files, is there any configuration change
(or other change) that I need to make to use these older programs dependent on
the older library and loader? Thanks in advance, Larry

hi

i posted something like this earlier but didn't get a response so i'm

when i tried to install rh7.1 it gives me an error saying 'cannot copy

i'm not out of harddisk space. i've tried with 1G swap and 8G root

i think this is a problem with anaconda installer as rh6.2 installs
fine. btw, i tried upgrading as well but got the same error. does anyone

but PLEASE how can i do it?

standard crap from PC/Mac dedicated companies:

"No tests have been made on Linux with these disks" Officially
supported operationg systems are the following:

- Windows 98
- Windows ME
- Windows 2000
- MacOS

We have no drivers written for Linux and don't know of any nor if

Brief and to the point - we don't give shit about it
would have been shorter though. Did someone make this disk run

I am slightly mistaken. My Linux-Mandrake(8.0) finds it but cannot
mount it or allow me to format it. It is listed as a LaCie Hard Drive
when I look at the system using HardDrake, but there is a comment
about it saying that Mandrake did not find a suitable driver
