ok, database built

no results. "locate" works for other things, so we don't need to worry
about a problem w/ the database

I haven't really done much yet, I think I'll just wipe the drive and do
a fresh install.

Subject: Compaq IJ600 (Lexmark) Printer Problems
Date: Thu, 10 Aug 2000 11:29:10 -0700

Linux Gurus:

I have purchased a new Compaq that included an IJ600 printer. This
computer is for my son going off to college where Linux is critical.
I have installed Red Hat 6.2 and then Caldera Systems 2.4. Neither
could get very far with this printer. The printer works fine in
Windows98, and the computer parallel port works fine with an HP850,
thus it must be the Printer driver. RH 6.2 recognizes the Compaq
printer as a Lexmark Inkjet 4103.

The odd thing is that none of the printer drivers will do anything
to get the attention of the printer, even just sending ASCII text,
or using something like cat printcap > /dev/lp0. The printer acts
dead, until you set it up in Windows98, all is fine. RH has a couple
of Lexmark printer drivers, but neither do anything. Caldera has
many more Lexmark printer drivers, but none of them work either.

Any suggestions on how I might get this ?newer printer working?
Unfortunately, Compaq seems to have written LINUX off (maybe
they like being abused by Microsoft).

Okay, does your linux server have a static IP
address? That is, when you ping your linux box
from home, is XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX always the same?
When you set up a user in /home/usernamehere, you
can use that username and password in outlook
express. The pop server name is just the static IP
or registered FQDN of your linux server.

G'luck.

"/usr/bin/perl -v" will tell you the version number.

If /usr/bin/perl is a flavor of version 5, then you (or the sysadmin)
could add a symbolic link from /usr/local/bin/perl5 to /usr/bin/perl.

Yes SuSE does. It's in the kernel. You can chose AMD-3D support during

Hi,

<RANT>
After spending a good two hours trying to find all the
different and mutually-compatible packages that I needed to install a
full MySQL to be used with XTRadius, I felt like Denis Miller on a bad
day...

In order to use add-ons, MySQL typically needs both Perl's DBI
module which contains general functions to access DBMS', and an
additional module to match the DBMS to which you actually intend to
connect.

Now, not only are release #'s incremented and
mutually-dependent (ie. the different packages are built to only
install if other modules match the ones that were used by whoever
built the package you're trying to install), but to some people, this
was just not enough fun: Let's make this more exciting by also
_changing the names_ under which those different packages are known...

For instance:

DBI-perl-bin-0.93-1.i386.rpm
DBI-1.13-1.i386.rpm
perl-DBI-1.13-1mdk.i586.rpm

perl-Msql-Mysql-modules-1.2210-2.i386.rpm
mysql-DBI-perl-bin-1.825-1.i386.rpm
mysql-perl-3.20.32a-3.i386.rpm

=> Me thinks we should come up with an improved version of RPM that
will generate even more twisted and random names for the packages it
builds...

Do you think there'll be a day when a bunch of site admins get
together, and decide to act as a big reference repository of RPMs to
to avoid this madness? BTW, I found all those on RPMFind's servers.

Where's a simple SETUP.EXE when you need it...

With the SSL option enabled, Netscape will try to connect on port 993,
which is the standard port for secure IMAP, so you should change your
"-d imap" to "-d 993". If you telnet to the port on which stunnel is
running, you will get connected (as you note), but there is no IMAPD or
SSL prompt: stunnel is waiting to exchange and verify SSL information
before invoking IMAP.

ok, we'll come back to the others later, for the first we know we have
named running, but don't know wich version.
on the top of our man pages 'man named' it is written 'NAMED (8)', so
one would think version is 8.
In the DNS_HOWTO we find 'If the named man page talks about (at the very
end, the FILES section) named.conf you have bind 8, if it talks about
named.boot you have bind 4.' our manpages talk about named.boot, so one
could think it's named version 4.
>From the setup of the box and configuration of the nameserver i remember
something that he did not work according to some settings in named.boot,
so that some settings in the zone records must be set to default values
before the zone was accepted. named.boot exists on our box, named.conf
is an empty file.
I find it useless to work any further before i know wich version we are
running in real. since the box bears functions in a working
productive environment i can not just get bind 8 and give it a try,
first i have to check the basics and decide what to do.

Any suggestions?? TIA Berhard S. <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Sounds like you don't have the X rpm's installed.
Pulll all the working cononfig files that you have edited/setup/customised
onto some other hdd/partition, and keep them safe.

The do a reinstall, and select X Windows support. Once the all the rpm's are
in , it will try to run the XConfigurator, I think. what ever happens, get
it to finish the install, boot into runlevel 3, and then do the locate
thing. you should have a startx somewhere, and there should be the
XCnfigurator and the XF86Setup programs.
luck.

You should upgrade to kernel 2.2.16 *AND* install the
related ide patch.

ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.2/
ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/hedrick/ide.2.2.16.all.20000805
.patch.gz

*Read* the UltraDMA howtwo about passing your
Promise configuration information to LILO

http://www.linux.org/help/ldp/howto/mini/Ultra-DMA.html

Note the section under the Promise Ultra33

http://www.linux.org/help/ldp/howto/mini/Ultra-DMA-5.html

This is what worked for me and I'm sure your milage will vary.

Good luck.

Jake

If you didn't install LILO in your MBR (Master Boot Record), but in
your Linux partition, it's probably enough to mark your Linux
partition as active in DOS's fdisk.

Hope this helps!

Subject: Cannot start nfs locking services: lockdsvc connection refused

All,

I cannot start nfs locking services either via restart, linuxconf, or
the command line. I consistently get a message (from the log file):

  Executing some Sysv init scripts
    Executing: /etc/rc.d/rc5.d/S10network reload
    Executing: /etc/rc.d/rc5.d/S14nfslock restart
        * The command takes more than 15 seconds to execute, odd
        * killed by operator
Grabbing some late messages from command /etc/rc.d/rc5.d/S14nfslock
  restart
        > lockdsvc: Connection refused
        > [FAILED]rpc.statd [FAILED][ OK ]done.

I think this is causing other problems on my system (at least it is
interferring with using Linuxconf!) I searched the usual sites, but
found no useful references to lockdsvc and it's handling of connections.

Any help would be appreciated.

I have just upgraded to Redhat Linux, 6.2 i586 2.2.14.

Regards,
Raman

Subject: HELP ERRNO 111 at INSTALL
Date: Thu, 10 Aug 2000 15:31:44 -0400

I'm new to linux and am trying to build a machine from scratch using
Linux Mandrake 7.0. When I try to run the setup program by booting
directly from the cd, the program initializes the cd drive, then it
prints. " IN SECOND STAGE OF INSTALLATION" . Following this message it
crashes with

_x11TransSocketUNIXconnect:can'tconnect:errno=111
Cannotopendisplay:0:at /usr/bin/perl-install/my_gtk.pm line139

I have also tried creating a boot disk and running the install that
way. It works much better. It goes through the installation of
packets, but the crashes with a mouse configuration error. If I skip
past this problem and try to create a user profile when it asks, it
crashes with signal 11.

Any suggestions? Please help. I have searched the web over, but the
only help I can find with the "Cannotopendisplay...." error is in
Spanish and my spanish is very bad.

Thanks for any help,
Heath
