It's a change from indetd to xinetd.

+ I can't find any documentation for the syntax of this option.

man xinetd.conf

Before you actually try to startx, you might want to try to load only
/usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86.

If you want, you can send me an email with 2 files attached:

- XF86Config
- /var/log/XF86Config.0.log

If you need help, send it directly by email.

Yes I'm running RedHat 7 but not out of the box (I downloaded it ;) .
I have kernel 2.4.0-prerelease and Xfree86-4.0.2 that I compiled myself along
with the driver provided by Matrox. Yes I replaced XFree's mga_drv.o module
with the one I recompiled from the source code of Matrox's

That's true, I forgot to mention IMAP. I should have said, "any of the
traditionally sane methods will work just fine." :-)

Subject: Need Ethernet Help

hi

i'm trying to connect 2 computers via ethernet cards. i have no
experience with setting up ethernets whatsoever so please excuse me if i
ask any dumb questions ;)

i have an intel etherexpress 100 and a 3com etherlink III. Following the
instructions in the Ethernet HOWTO, i've set up both cards. The
etherexpress uses a strange io range however. it uses the range
c8000000-c800001f. i'm not sure if this is correct. other values for
this card (from /proc/pci) are io=0xe800, irq=9. everything seems fine
with the etherlink card (io=0x300 irq=10). i have both drivers compiled
into the kernel.

(note: i have a sound blaster awe64 on one machine. when i remove this
card, the etherexpress automatically uses irq 10, but even then, nothing
works)

i then use ifconfig and route as follows:
(for the moment, i'm just using any ip addresses to test the system and
i'm not using DNS. i place the entries in /etc/hosts)

for machine 1 (etherexpress):
ifconfig eth0 197.3.2.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 up
route -net 197.3.2.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 eth0

for machine 2 (etherlink):
ifconfig eth0 197.3.2.2 netmask 255.255.255.0 up
route -net 197.3.2.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 eth0

both cards are connected directly to each other using a standard
telephone cable.

after doing this, i use one machine to ping the other, but it doesnt
work. i've tried passing parameters to the drivers at boot time (eg.
ether=9,0x300,eth0) but it doesnt seem to make a difference.

below, i've included the output when loading the drivers for these
cards.

if anyone can help, please do so. i've tried everything i can think of
and i'm getting nowhere fast.

thanks
ali

Thanks for the tip...

Booting linux single did help; I now have root access to the machine
without limited device operation.

However, I noticed that a program called hunt1-5 has been installed in
the /root directory. I took a look at its README file, and the program
seems to be designed to usurp internet.

How and why was my machine targeted? I have been using mainly for my
own user and programming needs [i.e, in workstation mode], and did not
even configure remote FTP or Telnet access.

I have not had too much time to investigate, but all the user data
seems to be intact...

The only files that "seem" to have been changed [only took a cursory
look] are /etc/shadow, /etc/passwd, and /etc/ftpusers.

However, the changes are minor at best and do not account for my
inability to even get a password prompt.

Not good -

Get a hub, they can be had for around $20 these days.

Or if you don't want to use a hub, use a crossover cable.

Documented??? This LPD is quintessentially Berkeley... You want
documentation, read the source code. As if that will help - it's
rather obscure, to put it kindly. Seriously, though, there are
several efforts out there to replace the whole BSD LPD system,
and I hope they succede, and soon. Surely the results will be
better and better documented.

First of all, if you can try a newer release (Slackware 3.5 is really old)
that alone might solve the problem. Second, make sure your secondary IDE
has a unique IRQ (like 15) - not shared with any other device, for example
that SCSI card. Third, know that "working under W95" is not proof of
goodness of hardware. It is possible that your CD is not compatible with
Linux, or borderline flakey and W95 doesn't care (being flakey itself).

Subject: Dell PowerEdge 2450 & Linux 6.2/7.0

I'm going to install RedHat 7.0 on a Dell 2450, and I have to set up the
root partition on a RAID5. We've got another 2450 that came preinstalled
with 6.2, and although it works fine, we've never been able to reboot it
with a recompiled kernel. Dell told me there's a problem with the PERC
controller, which RedHat does not support.

Does anybody know

1) if RH 7.0 supports it

2) if there's a way to force a normal (i.e. non-Dell-customized)
installer to see the Dell drivers on a floppy?

3) if there is a way to boot from RAID without having to use initrd?

Thanks

Eugenio

Subject: email setup
Date: Mon, 08 Jan 2001 01:47:52 GMT

I am setting a Linux workstation using Red Hat 7.0 and i need some help
setting up my email.

Here is my email problem.

I have multiple ISP email accounts. There are two types of these accounts
one is complex and can contain mail destined for ultiple users. The other
type is a simple redirection.

I am trying to collect mail from various accounts, redirect some of it to
other users and forward all of my email to a specific seperate ISP email
address.

for example:

complex email account 1

POP3 name: email.isp1.com
account postmaster.domain1.com
This is a catch all account for *@domain1.com and can contain mail to:
  postmaster.domain1.com [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED]
also it is catch all for *@domain2.com and can contain mail to:
  [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED]

This email should be all redirected to know email accounts.
Those that are still unknown are shipped to another catch all account.

i.e. [EMAIL PROTECTED] ==> [EMAIL PROTECTED]
      [EMAIL PROTECTED]        ==> [EMAIL PROTECTED]
      [EMAIL PROTECTED]        ==> [EMAIL PROTECTED]
      unknown               ==> [EMAIL PROTECTED]

email account 2

POP3 name: email.isp2.com
account [EMAIL PROTECTED]
This is a standard email account and all email should go to
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

I want email to contain only its original information in the external To:,
From: etc.

My SMTP server is at isp3.com and needs a logon account. I don't plan on
having a local SMTP server if possible

My machine is connected to the net via ADSL and PPPoE and has no fixed host
name and IP address.

Can all of this be done with fetchmail and sendmail (or postfix)?

I really do need help with a specific example of the complex situation.

One way to get your system back is to do a base install.

Load the linux installer and do not select any packages.
Be sure to not select to format your partitions.
If you format your partitions then you lose all your data.

Give new passwords to the installer, and it should do a base install,
filesystem only.

This should get you running.

I have done this kind of install several times.

Also, check the jumpers on the drives, cd first.

Linux is very particular about the drive jumpers for master and slave.
You get the same kind of errors as irq conflicts.

You might also check your cmos setup settings, and your pci mapping settings.
