Heath,
This is frequently caused because the system cannot determine your
graphics system during the graphical install. You need to perform a text
install and then when done run "xf86config" from the command line
as root to configure your graphics system. You should then be squared
away.

Looks strangely related to a memory problem also. Is your video using
the first 4-8mb of your ram? Is your motherboard supported by Mandrake?
If the display setup things suggested by the other responder does not
help try verifying your compatibility, then reseating your memory on
the motherboard.

Check you /etc/inetd.conf file and scroll down to the entries for port 21
and 23 (ftp and Telnet, respectively). If there is a "tcpwrapper"
mentioned on the line then you should check your /etc/hosts.allow
and /etc/hosts.deny files.
If there are no valid entries in /etc/hosts.allow then tcpwrapper won't
allow connections to tcpwrapped daemons. If /etc/hosts.deny has an entry
that matches all outside connections, remote connections to your machine
will always be disallowed.

Subject: ide0: reset timeout: status=0x80{Busy}; hda drive not ready for command
Date: Thu, 10 Aug 2000 23:30:26 GMT
Dear All,
I recently install linux redhat 6.2(Kernel 2.2.14-5.0) on an Intel PIII
650 machine with seagate hd 30G as my email server.
The system run smoothly for about 3 weeks.
Last week system hangs, there is a problem in the IDE and give me the
following message:
ide0: reset timeout: status=0x80{Busy}
hda drive not ready for command
End-request: I/O error, dev, dev0301(Hda) Sector 13107408
The above message continue to appear with increasing Sector size at the
end. Seems to me, The kernel cannot find the harddisk.
The system has to be reboot and some bad sector in the HD. It can run for
about another 12 hours, and the system will hang again with the same
message.
I try command such as: linux hda=C,H,S according the HD specification. the
system still hangs. (and only hangs during the night when no one using the
email service)
Could anyone there solve my puzzle or at least give me some hints to fix
this problem?
Many Thanks,
Dan

RH6.2 install question:
I am trying to install RH6.2 on an Intel 586 machine from a maker I
haven't used before. It seems to go successfully but when I try to boot
from the hard drive I get "L 07 07 07 07 . . . ." I can boot from my
boot floppy just fine.
I have:
(1) verified that my /boot partition is within the first 1024 cylinders
(it is in cylinders 1 - 4). LILO is being written to /dev/hdb (the
MBR).
(2) verified that my BIOS has LBA enabled and the MBR not
write-protected.
(3) looked at /etc/lilo.conf on the hard drive and the floppy. I don't
see anything on the hard drive version that gives me pause, except maybe
a line "map=/boot/map" that is not present in the floppy version. But
deleting this line didn't help. /boot/map is a binary that I can't
troubleshoot myself with my present knowledge.
Any advice?

I'm not sure if this is a problem with sendmail or my DNS, but I have set
up a machine to run Linux-Mandrake 7.1 with Sendmail 8.9.3 as an email
server for a domain that I am running (mydomain.com). It is working fine
as an SMTP server for me, but whenever I try to send mail to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] through another SMTP server, such as Hotmail, the message
isn't getting through. I check the mail queue on the server, and it is
empty, but the Hotmail account isn't getting any messages that it has
bounced. When I checked the settings in netconf, it is using procmail as
the local delivery agent, any it is checked to accept mail for
mydomain.com. Is there another configuration setting that I am missing, or
do I need to do more than just add the MX record to the DNS? If you need
any more information, just let me know.

I've played the dot-com games years ago, before the dot-com craze from

Been there. Done that. No big deal. Got out before the dot-com became
dot-gone. ;-)
But might be back later.
In Mr. Hasler 's case is he got the shares as a reward for contributing
to the GNU-GPL through Debian.
He didn't buy the shares himself.

Madness may be your only way out.
Your query is not simple because networking is an exceedingly complex
aggregate of settings and agreements established between multiple pieces of
hardware. If any one is off by a hair's breadth, ya' got nuttin'.
To answer your question in its simplest form: Yes. Your Linux firewall
_could_ prevent your W98se workstation from getting through.
To know whether or not it _is_ the reason will require that you give us a
lot more information about the total network setup.
1. What is the IP address scheme?
2. On which side of the firewall is the W98 machine.
3. What is the W98 machine trying to connect to?
4. How is it trying to connect? Telnet? Samba?
5. Is TCP/IP set up properly on the W98 machine?
6. What are the firewall rules on the Linux machine?
That is just to get the ball rolling. You might have to dig a lot deeper
after that.

** If you really have a true kshell (www.kornshell.com), then in your ".profile"
you want "export ENV=~/.kshrc"
The kshell will execute another file (in addition to the .profile) if you put its
name in the ENV variable. (NOTE: unlike BASH, you don't have to source the environment
file as is done in the sample .bash_profile that RH supplies.
When you open another kshell, if the ENV variable is exported, it will automatically be
executed at all sublevels.

You miss the point. The specific name of the application, the nature
of the application, do not matter in the slightest. As mentioned
below, some of this is _a bit silly_.
>> Some of those options are somewhat silly, but legally viable.
The point, that evidently you're too enamoured with making fun of the
idea of a DVD player app to recognize, is that whatever the application,
whether a DVD player, or text editor, or accounting system, or web cache,
or whatever, the author has the ability to release the code simultaneously
under the GPL as well as under whatever other licenses he or she wishes
to use.
One might release under the GPL to provide something hobbyists may
be interested in, whilst also having a ROMed version configured for
deployment embedded in "appliance" devices, as well as having a third
license for "expensive, royaltied source that allows customization"
usable for those that like the GPLed code, but don't want to need to
release sources that the GPL would mandate.
That precise scenario has reportedly been the case for Aladdin
Ghostscript, which is dually released under GPL as well as other
'private' license arrangements, and I suspect that it's also the case
for the Cygnus Ecos RTOS.

hard time getting anything reliable to gather all 6 pop3 accounts into
one mail reader. I've been using Spruce, but don't like it very much,
and it is still quite buggy. I can't get balsa to work ( I keep getting
an error that it can't open a temporary mailbox to spool to, and an
flock fails). I've been trying unsuccessfully to get fetchmail to work
so I can use Mahogany or even go back to netscape mail. Fetchmail seems
to work fine until it attempts to open my local mailbox. Here is the
output from the debug window:
<bunch of skipped messages>
skipping message 41 not flushed
fetchmail: POP3> TOP 42 99999999
fetchmail: POP3< +OK 1018 octets
reading message 42 of 102 (1018 octets)
fetchmail: SMTP connect to steve@PHX74284 failed
fetchmail: POP3> QUIT
fetchmail: POP3<
fetchmail: SMTP transaction error while fetching from mail.eartlink.net
fetchmail: Query status=10 (SMTP)
fetchmail: normal termination, status 10
Done.
PHX74284 is an artifact of the broadband modem. I have this address
aliased in the host file to another name, which also fails. It fails
when using just my local account name. Sendmail is up and supposedly
accepting connections. My firewall has been set to let port 25 through
(although I don't think that has anything to do with it).
Can anyone provide any insight as to what I'm doing wrong? Or why balsa
is giving me that error (what exactly is it trying to open? certainly
not /var/spool/mail, which is wide open right now). Or any suggestions
for a stable MUA that can handle multiple pop3 accounts?
Thanks for any help,
Steve
