Reply-To: Where you found it
Ok, this is getting old.
I have a compaq 12XL310 that after almost a month finally got X to
work with my video card. BLAM, COOL.
Now, what's this I see, NO MODEM.
damn those winmodems. Well, I decided to not even bother with trying
to configure the winmodem after what I have read so I went out and
bought a zoom 3000 pcmcia modem, inserted it, booted up and BLAM,
well, almost. Linux Can't Find It !!!!!
WTF. This hardware configuration is getting on my nerves.
Why can't linux find the pcmcia modem? I took out the built in modem
and it still can't find it. I get an error at boot that goes
something like this:
register_serial(): autoconfig failed serial_cs: register_serial() at
0x02f8, irq 3 failed.
Almost looks like a hardware conflict but i'm not sure.
any suggestions?
Any help is appreciated.

Hi, I tried to upgrade glibc for my Linux system (I had glibc-2.1.3
installed, and I wanted to upgrade to 2.2.3). I got the source code of
glibc-2.2.3, compiled it. I first installed it to /usr/local/glibc-new to
see if the installation can be finished successfully, and it did, but then
I re-configured it to use the prefix /usr (so the libraries go to /lib and
/usr/lib), and during the "make install" it breaks down, saying /bin/sh
can't find shared object files etc. I made the big mistake of logging out,
and cannot get in any more after that. The system refuses to boot, saying
init cannot find shared object files etc. Lucky that I had my personal
important files backup'ed before this.
So is this still fixable? Or should I simply re-install the whole system?
Any help or advice is welcome, thanks a lot!

If you use the bash shell (most common) then do this ?
gcc -0 hello.c 2> error.txt
The "2" tells the bash shell to re direct *errors* to "error.txt"

Besides breaking just about every executable that you have if you
actually do get that new set of libraries installed, what else do you
hope to accomplish with this exercise?
Yes, you are going to have to re-install.

Red Hat 7.1 is, if I'm not mistaken, based on glibc-2.2, whereas
Red Hat 6.2 is based on glibc-2.1. This might be a recipe for
disaster. Stick with the 6.2-distro RPMs.

I, too, tried to go from 6.2 to 7.0, and got disgusted enough to
blow it off and re-install 6.2. However, I'm now running 7.1, and
it seems to be much improved. Give it a try.

I have an epson photo printer 875. For some reason the paper doesn't

correctly.
(I can't say if this is the result of linux or simply the hardware).
The

I frequently need to cancel or pause print jobs. I am using the gui

I could probably install another print monitoring tool if I need to.
Does this sound like

Hi,
I am using lesstif and have a problem on the console
after I switch to tty1 by alt+ctrl+F1, I found that
there are many errors though I still can run the mwm
and other X app without noticing that.
The errors look like:
/proc/958/fd/15: No such file or directory.
the number 958 is not fixed and will increase when
more applications are used. This error only appear
when I use the mwm functions (e.g. f.exec in .mwmrc)
and will not appear if I involve the application in
termail command line.
I hope to get rid if this error. thanks in advance!

If your ELSA card is an active one, you may have success. If it's passive
then you'll be out of luck. The only passive cards that work with fax
are AVM's Fritz!Cards (with drivers from AVM). You'll also need a package
called capi4hylafax.

When process accounting stops
we see "Process accounting paused"
in /var/log/messages. That pause of course is
forever until process accounting
explicitly restarted again.
I found this below on the net.
How did this got changed from redhat 6.2 (2.2.17-14)
to redhat 7.1 (2.4.2-2) ....?
What is the remedy? Or solution?

You can get away with two partitions (/ and <swap>) but with these new

You can search for the .tar.gz file, I think www.freshmeat.net will probably
have it. Then re-compile. HTH

Don't think that's software....

Subject: Lilo questions
Date: Tue, 5 Jun 2001 09:34:44 +0200
1) When I finished installing my PC, and boot, it displays "LI" and then
stops. Whether I put lilo in /dev/hda or /dev/hda1. (/dev/hda1 active
partition or not).
Why is this?
2) So I put lilo on /dev/fd0, tried that. "LI" then hangs.
3) Should lilo be in /dev/hda or /dev/hda1 (generally speaking, and why?)
It's not the 1024 Cylinder problem, my disk doesn't have that many. It's an
old, 512MB HDD (working condition, used it to boot another machine)
Why does this happen, and what can I do to rectify it? It's a new
installation, so re-installing is fine.

#should look something like this
NETWORKING=yes
FORWARD_IPV4=yes
HOSTNAME=hostname.domain.com
DOMAINNAME=domainname.com
GATEWAY=###.###.###.###
GATEWAYDEV=eth0
#/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0

the files needed to boot are not at the expected location.

No doubt, this doesn't change a thing.

Whatever you prefer. I always put it in the MBR.

What does fdisk -l /dev/hda tell you about the number of cylinders?
The size of the disk is no guarantee that the number of cylinders is less
than 1024. (eg. you would be using 16 heads/63 sectors per track)

loaded the secondary boot loader but failed to execute it. This can be
a problem with the disk geometry or you update boot.b without esecuting
"lilo" to update the map.

Usually it's installed in the MBR of the first disk so it's /dev/hda
(hda1 is the first partition)

Try boot with a rescue disk or a boot floppy and then run lilo
at the command prompt (you must login as root). Check also your LILO
installation and configuration file.
