Yeah I've heard dell makes some good machines,but...There are probably
other smaller companies that can use your money too. Maybe for the
support, warranty etc, but Im not sure Dell is the place to be looking
for Linux support, correct me on that if Im wrong. Yesterday I emailed
my brother just to show him a price on a system I thought was crazy,
this thing had dual PIII 650'z, 256 ram, 20gigs, the works, no
monitor though, for 1300. Pre-installed with Linux, I was not
intrested in buying but just could not believe the prices out there.
Makes me think it might worthwhile to upgrade from these 166's
afterall. Also, the ad was in comp.sys.linux.announce, which I
understand is moderated, so i guess maybe the advertisements in that
group could possibly be more reputable, again, correct me if Im wrong.

I wont post the ad here, I'm just saying 2000 is a lot of money, I
think you can probably have a dual-processor machine for that kind of
money. Does anyone know how ads get posted in comp.sys.linux announce?

Just stay away from Winmodems, you know that. But I guess some of
these work nowadays?! Dont buy one anyway.

For sound obviously a real sound blaster. But this is changing too, I
got a on-the-motherboard sound chip working yesterday I had not even
bothered to try and get working for about 6 months, I just assumed it
would not work, it did, and it was easy as all hell. My brother has a
straight up Micrsoft Windows Sound System card workin under linux. So,
theres 2 examples of cards/chips that someone would probably
reccommend you stay away from that work, point is, lotsa stuff works
under linux. The SB AWE32 is a good cheap card, if you ask me. Other
multimedia stuff, cameras, scanners, etc..I dunno.

Anyway, give your money to a smaller start-up! Buy a Linux
pre-installed/configured if your worried. Then re-install just for
fun, or you may want a different distro.

Hello all,

I've been away from the Linux scene for awhile, and would like to build
another Linux box. How is the support for USB now? Any distro. supporting
this more than the others? I was probably going to build on Red Hat, since
this is what I am use to, but I am open to any and all suggestions.

Thanks,

Kent

I need a simple cgi script to send info from a web based form. (Mailto). I
have perl installed and have checked freshmeat.net for a solution. I have
found webfeed which looks like it will do what I want but it is asking for
"Perl-Mail-Sendmail". I am sure I am missing some type of install.
Anyway perhaps there is a libary of cgi scripts I can just put in the script
directory. All I need is a Mailto function.

OS: RedHat 6.2
Mail: Sendmail
Web: Apache

Any help is greatly appriciated.

Hi, all -

I am trying to install Tiny Linux on an old Thinkpad 360 (12MB of RAM).
For those unfamiliar with it, it is a stripped down version of Slackware
4.0.

It boots the base.i disk fine, but barfs consistently on the root.gz disk
(which I have remade several times) with a stack trace. I'm willing to
unzip and poke around in its contents, but I'm not sure what to look for.

Anyone out here succuessfully installed this distro? Any other
suggestions for a 12MB machine?

TIA -

Regards,
jh

PS - if it is convenient, email will reach me faster.

hi,
Since I've upgraded to SuSE 6.4, I can't get netscape to run except when
logged in as root. I have tried setting a user with all the same groups
as root, and get the same results: clicking the icon does nothing,
typing netscape from a terminal window responds with Bus error.
What the scoop?

My 6.4 installation worked, but I had netscape in there only for a day;
I went and downloaded the 128-bit encryption version (now standard)
from Netscape as a tarball and installed it. That version works
perfectly.

I suggest you do what I did. Fire up w3m (awesome text-based browser),
go to netscape, get the 128-bit version, untar, install, ta-da!

Subject: Unrecognized symbols printk copy_from_user.....
Date: Sat, 12 Aug 2000 08:40:36 -0700

Man kernel programming is fun.........

I have one machine that has no problems with printk, copy_from_user,
copy_to_user, unresgister_chrdev, and register_chrdev. The machines have
the exact same hardware and both are running Redhat 6.2, with kernel version
2.2.14. I loaded these kernels myself and made the configuration the same
for both machines. (I even took the .config file from the good machine and
put it in the bad machine!!) Both systems run fine and what not. But when
I load a compile a module using the following:

#testdriver.o: testdriver.c /usr/include/linux/version.h
# Makefile for a basic kernel module

#CC=gcc
#MODCFLAGS := -Wall -DMODULE -D__KERNEL__ -DLINUX

rm -f testdriver.o

#testdriver.o: testdriver.c /usr/include/linux/version.h
# $(CC) $(MODCFLAGS) -c testdriver.c
gcc -Wall -DMODULE -D__KERNEL__ -DLINUX -c testdriver.c -o testdriver.o

Then I load the module with "insmod testdriver.o", the following error comes
out on the "bad" machine and it works fine on the "good" machine.

[root@ftpc4 ARC8-8-2000]# ./maktest
[root@ftpc4 ARC8-8-2000]# insmod testdriver.o
testdriver.o: unresolved symbol __generic_copy_from_user
testdriver.o: unresolved symbol unregister_chrdev
testdriver.o: unresolved symbol register_chrdev
testdriver.o: unresolved symbol printk
testdriver.o: unresolved symbol __generic_copy_to_user

NOTE: both computers have the nodes on them, I used "mknod /dev/testdriver
c 254 0" to make the nodes for this char device.

Any suggestions about what my problem may be?

Thanks once again to all you Linux guru's out there!!

There is full USB support in Kernel 2.4 but it is the testing phase now.
You can download it and try it but it is still in testing.
The latest Red Hat only has partial USB support.
All the distro are coming out with 2.2.x releases until the 2.4 becomes
official.

I had to redo my Redhat 6.2 server and have a problem. I used to have quota
on for some of the users on one of the partitions. After I've redone the
server, I went back and used Linuxconf and 1) turned quota user and quota
group on for that partition, 2) I set the quota default to 5000. The
problem is once I activate that, almost none of the users on that partition
can add more files and most of them can't read e-mail getting a weird error
and saying that quota exceeded even though it didn't. I had to give them
all unlimited quota for the time being, but I need to know how I can fix
that?

Any idea?
Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks for the quick response.
I did as you described...load and installed the 4.72 128.
I used the ns-install script, and over-wrote /opt/netscape as the
installation directory
I know I got the install, since it asked once again for the license
agree.
I now get 'cant load plugin /opt/netscape/plugins/cpPack1.jar.old
Ignored
It still works when logged in as root
As another user, I still get bus error

I remember seeing this in a news group a long time ago, but didn't have
the problem then.
Any additional ideas?
Thanks Again, Don

Okay, now explicitly what kind of hardware do you have. Is it SCSI or
IDE, and how is it jumpered? Since you have a hdb in the "fstab" file,
I am guessing you have at least two IDE hard drives. Are they on the
same channel? Do you have a CD on the same channel as a HD? Did you
jumper the drives correctly? Each channel should have at least a master
and maybe a slave. Play it safe and don't mix in a cable select
jumpered device. Next, make sure each device is ATAPI jumpered. I had
a HD that didn't become recognized by windows until I jumpered an ATAPI
compatibility pin-position.

Good luck
Greg

I am using RedHat 6.2. Recently I have tweaked the system for using dpi
100 fonts as default. It worked just fine but the font in the menus of
most the applications (for example, Netscape, GhostView, Acrobat Reader,
etc.) looks a bit large to me. It used to be smaller in 75 dpi mode.

Where I can find the font settings to decrrease the font in the
application menus?

Cheers,

Lee,

I had the same problem, at least the same error message from startx. After
much grief, I resolved my problem as follows:

-Used XF86Setup to do setup

-Discovered that /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xinit/xinitrc is supposed to have a
symbolic link to /etc/X11/xinit which did not exist. Fixed this and startx
ran fine.

George,
No answers here, just sympathy and additional questions...

I trotted down to my local Fry's Electronics and purchased a
45 GB HD a couple nights ago, figuring I would augment the 30 GB Maxtor
I currently use for my system backups. I use these big guys as on-line
cpbk sump, in a single partition. The 30GB Maxtor on one of my other
servers is running very nicely under RH6.2, AMI BIOS, 450 MHz K6-2,
as a secondary master. The 45 GB didn't seem like much of a stretch,
and the $/MB ration made it seem attractive.

I stuck it in, and it wouldn't boot. Maxtor cheat sheet has
info on "...After connecting my new drive, my system hangs after
counting
the memory. Why? ..." which seems to map to my problem. They say to
install the cylinder limitation jumper (J46) and then use the MaxBlast
Plus installation software.

I installed J46 and the BIOS got past the hangup. I then tried
MaxBlast Plus, just to see what it would do. The bottom line of that
process was that it would only let me see some 9 + GB of the disk.

Not liking that solution, I went to the web site for the MB (J-542B)
and did not spot any help there. Then I went to Award (now merged with
Phoenix), and their site says (after you dig through the rubble), to go
to the MB mfr. They also point to a third party provider called
UNICORE.
I visited the UNICORE site, and although they do claim to support hard
drives up to 137 GB, I decided that there must be a better way for me,
one which is either guaranteed to work, or is at least free, in case it
doesn't work.

        I visited the Maxtor site [ http://www.maxtor.com/Maxtorhome.htm ]
and their claims are as follows:

So that throws it into the court of the MB mfr. Back to www.j-mark.com
web site.
I received little comfort from anything on the site. I did find a
downloadable
file for the J-542B board at www.j-mark.com/dl/dl.html. The description
is unclear
so I tried downloading the docs, to see if my specific problem is
addressed. Turns
out the docs file have an extension of .exe. So, I put the file on a
floppy and
took it to a W98 machine, tried to open it, and it says it needs a dll
file ".dll".
Harumph! These guys are incompetent. To cap it off, they say they
don't recommend
that anyone but their direct distributors flash the bios, and they wash
their hands
if you screw it up. Some support - they have one fix for something, but
they
are going to make it difficult to find out what the fix applies to, and
even then,
they don't recommend that us "mere mortals" do the work. I love it -
serves me
right for buying a "clone".

Guess I will move over to another server and start this process again -
hopefully
the board/bios are a little bit better supported than this J-mark thing.

Gene.
