Anybody who is thinking of participating in this scam should take a look
at this website first:
http://www.usps.gov/websites/depart/inspect/chainlet.htm
Since the U.S. Postal service gets into the act (you are supposed to
mail something, right?), this is relevant. The following quotation from
that site is particularly relevant:
"Do not be fooled if the chain letter is used to sell inexpensive
reports on credit, mail order sales, mailing lists, or other topics. The
primary purpose is to take your money, not to sell information.
"Selling" a product does not ensure legality. Be doubly suspicious if
there's a claim that the U.S. Postal Service or U.S. Postal Inspection
Service has declared the letter legal. This is said only to mislead you.
Neither the Postal Service nor Postal Inspectors give prior approval to
any chain letter."
Another good website:
http://www.stopspam.org/usenet/mmf/
Does this scheme somehow create money? No? But everybody who
participates gets out more than they put in. Everybody. Right!
People who play a state lottery know that, in order for one person to
win a million dollars, a million other people have to lose their
dollars. The numbers are different here, but the principle is the same.
Why do you suppose this individual is telling you how YOU can get
rich? Out of the goodness of his heart?

It's not. The previous Dynalink card was supported as an ASUSCOM card, the
card you're talking about (which I recently bought and installed on RH6.2)
seems to be supported as a "Winbond W6692 based card" (from my 6.2 config).
Check this out, let me know if you have more problems.

This is the first time I need to compile Apache with add-ons instead
of just using an RPM, so please bear with me.
Following instructions, I compiled and installed PHP4 before compiling
Apache, so I don't understand what you mean. Are there differents ways
other than doing the following?
# cd php-4.0.0
# ./configure --with-apache=../apache_1.3.12 --enable-track-vars
# make
# make install
# cp php.ini-dist /usr/local/lib/php.ini
(here, compiled and installed OpenSSL and mod_ssl)
# cd apache_1.3.12
# SSL_BASE=../openssl-0.9.x \
RSA_BASE=../rsaref-2.0/local \
./configure \
--enable-module=ssl \
--activate-module=src/modules/php4/libphp4.a \
--enable-module=php4 \
--prefix=/usr/local/apache \
--enable-shared=ssl
# make
Maybe you mean that the above installs PHP4 as a stand-alone app
instead of an Apache module?
Thx much for any tip
FF.

Sorry, you MUST reformat and reinstall!
What I would do is boot from a floppy linux distro, not from your rescue
disk. IIRC the RH rescue disk loads the kernel from the /boot dir, which
may have been recompiled by now. I use "Tom's RTBT" (RooT BooT) floppy
available from:
http://www.toms.net/rb/home.html
Once booted clean, mount your disk(s) with the "-o nosuid noexec nodev"
options and make a system backup if you want it for later forensics. You
can then copy any scripts or data you need. You can count on most
system binaries being trojans by now, so leave them alone. When I got
rooted I did a fresh install of linux then a selective restore of data
areas and my config scripts from backups. Be sure to inspect any
scripts you recover to make sure they've not been altered (even from
backups)!
I would strongly recommend using the Bastille linux hardening
scripts available through the homepage bastille-linux.org or download
directly (~200KB) from:
http://download.sourceforge.net/bastille-linux/Bastille-1.1.1.tgz The
Bastille scripts will activate most of the operating system's built in
security features very effectively. Setup is pretty easy, with lots of
onscreen info about each option.
And version 1.1.1 is optimized for RedHat v6.2!
After you apply the scripts be sure you read the log files often.
Hope this helps!

Hi,
normally if you start an ftp session to your SuSE box, it will automatically
start ftpd.
Give it a try.
If you should have problems to login as root to ftp, edit /etc/ftpusers and
put the line for root in comment.

Both KDE's and SuSE's site seem to indicate that your base SuSE
system should be upgraded to 6.4 in order to utilize KDE2. You'd
best do a proper OS upgrade first.
Once your entire system is at the 6.4 or 7.0 level:
The rpms on Suse's own site for KDE 2.0.1 are a tangled jungle that
YaST is unable to cope with, and that rpm seems to break down on when
trying to follow all the symlinks. Moreover, the upgrade shell script
that is mentioned in SuSE's online KDE2 install FAQ does not appear to
be actually available.
However, the SuSE 6.4 and 7.0 KDE upgrade files from KDE's *own* site seem
to install and operate simply and nearly flawlessly.
Obtain from KDE's own site the *entire directory* for the kde2 upgrade for
SuSE 6.4 or 7.0
using a recursive command-line ftp client like ncftp and put this entire
directory structure into some sort of temporary install directory. Then
from the command line as root in this installation directory, run rpm
as follows:
rpm -Uvh --force --nodeps *.rpm
which will install/upgrade all the packages without dropping you into
unfulfilled dependency hell through the packages being installed in
this or that order. In the unlikely event that rpm hangs or crashes, run
the command as above again. Once rpm churns through all the packages, you
should be set. Run kde2 *not* as default by adding the command-line argument
to startx "startx kde2" If you like it, you may make it the default by
configuring susewm from YaST. I was pleasantly surprised at how zippy
2.0.1 was, particularly when compared with the 1.93 beta that shipped with
SuSE 7.
Cheers,

I've just installed SuSE 7.0, during the installation I checked the box
Configure X Server later, evreything installed OK, and when I booted up into
Linux I entered my root login with password.
I then tried to set up Sax2, I can get into sax2 after a few blank screens !

Unfortunatley when I try to configure sax2 the system just hangs and I have
to reboot.
My configuration is I have 2 graphic cards, one Elsa Erazor III 32MB - AGP
and the other one is an S3 Virge 2MB - PCI.
I am trying to set the resolutions with the different amount of colours and
the system just hangs.
Can anyone help me!

Subject: 2.4 kernel problem with ip_always_defrag, IRQ conflict
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Date: Tue, 09 Jan 2001 21:20:20 GMT
I'm trying to build the new 2.4.0 kernel on a RedHat 6.1 machine (upgraded).
Most things went smoothly, except two problems - the first might be the
result of the second. I can supply more details if I know where to look.
Problem 1:
==========
/etc/rc.d/init.d/network complains:
/proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_always_defrag is missing --
cannot control IP defragmentation
The missing file is present when I reboot into 2.2.12 kernel. I tried but
could not figure out which kernel configuration option controls this. The
end result is that although eth0 shows up in ifconfig, pinging of any
machine just hangs a few moments until it says "network unreachable".
Problem 2:
==========
The Xircom PCMCIA card (ethernet + modem) now uses IRQ 11, which is also
used by USB. (It uses IRQ 3 under 2.2.12.)
Here are a few excerpts from /var/log/messages:
kernel: usb.c: registered new driver usbdevfs
kernel: usb.c: registered new driver hub
kernel: PCI: Found IRQ 11 for device 00:07.2
kernel: PCI: The same IRQ used for device 00:03.0
pcmcia: modules
kernel: PCI: The same IRQ used for device 00:03.1
kernel: uhci.c: USB UHCI at I/O 0xdce0, IRQ 11
kernel: options: [pci] [cardbus] [apm]
kernel: Intel PCIC probe: PCI: Found IRQ 11 for device 00:03.0
kernel: PCI: The same IRQ used for device 00:03.1
kernel: PCI: The same IRQ used for device 00:07.2
kernel: PCI: Found IRQ 11 for device 00:03.1
kernel: PCI: The same IRQ used for device 00:03.0
kernel: PCI: The same IRQ used for device 00:07.2
I'm not sure how these device numbers are matched to
Documentation/devices.txt.
The IRQ conflict shows up in /proc/interrupts as
IRQ 11 used by i82365, USB and eth0. Under 2.2.12 kernel I have
3: 32307 XT-PIC eth0
10: 4 XT-PIC i82365
Thanks for any help.

I'm probably totally wrong, but I had the exact same problem, the only
difference was that I installed a USB mouse in windows (i run dual boot)
and all of a sudden my ps/2 mouse stopped working, if this is the case,
just go get a newer version of linux that has USB support, I use red hat
7, and continue using your USB mouse in linux.

Using RH7, but installing nvidia kernel/glx from rpm/srpm/source didn't
worked (kernel not supported) so I downgraded to RH6.2 (You might
consider to call it upgrading) Now installing goes fine, i've installed
the NVIDIA_kernel and the GLX drivers and before that I removed the Mesa

I got the line alias char-major-195 NVdriver @ my conf.modules but when
I boot my box NVdriver doesn't show up with lsmod (Maybe this is normal
but I don't really know.)
So I just load the module with insmod and I don't get any errors or
something.
But when I start XFree my linux box dies. I get somekind of blue screen,
my monitor swithes to an other res. I see some other red lines at the
top of my screen and my computer hangs, my keyboard doesn't respond
anymore using ctrl-alt-del etc.
I tried about everything! Using other resolutions, other display
settings. It all didn't helped. When I change back to the nv driver X
boots again.
I tried finding an error at the XFree log file but there is no output of
X there. (Only when I use the nv driver and it doesn't crash)
Anyone can help me out with this problem? I've been busy for days with
this.

But if you connect with the host then you can't connect to the outside in
win98, as I recall. You can set up both types of network connection in
win2000.
Is this not correct? If not, please let me know.
Thx

:
: No. It looks like the Win95/98 system needs to be installed into VMware's
: Virtual Machine.
:
: > If not, how do you share files between the native

:
: You mount the native Windows system to a mount point on your Linux
: system....then the VM sees it through a Samba private (virtual network) that
: exists ONLY betwen the VM and your Linux system. on mysystem, the Linux host
: name is Dell and the VM's host name is "vmware" (not very imaginative
: yesterday). Once I added netbeui to the protocol stack in the VM, when I open
: Network neighbourhood on any Windows system on my network, I can see the vmware
: host and all it's resources. The VM can see all the other systems.....including
: the host Linux system (though I had to search as below). I now have printing all
: set up. I set up the Linux printing first.....made sure that worked...then set
: up the VM's printing in Windows as you normally would. I'm not sure I really
: needed to set up the printing in Linux forst...it just seemed like a good
: idea.
:
: To see dell (my linux host), I have to search (start -> search in WinME / find
: in Win98)....but this is because I have not modified the workgroup name from the
: default "workgroup". This may be in the VM's "windows.cfg" file...but I have not
: looked. I can read files from dell - only from the root directory. I can't map
: to a subdirectory (where my original windows is a mount piont called
: "/win".....but I just can't write to them. I started messing with the
: permissions and seem to have screwed it up as now I can see the directory that
: the old windows system is in, but none of the files.....so I put that down as my
: fault.
:
: I can read / write to any other network drive....so I have been moving files i
: want to modify off to other systems. I have a 100MB LAN with 6 PCs on it, so
: performance has so far not been an issue.
:
: I had been hoping to just write to the vfat volume at /win, but it doesn't look
: at this point as though I can. I'll try deleting the mount point and recreating
: it....that should fix it so I can at least browse it again. .
:
: > I have heard there is something like a special hardware-profile for this
: > purpose.
:
: Not sure what you mean by this.....it is all done through the network.
:
: > Just being curious... want to setup
: > VMWare too.
:
: It wasn't too hard.....but it helps to understand a bit about the main concepts
: involved in Windows, samba and IP networking and configuration. If you know
: enough, this is easy. If you are finding it a real struggle....then you need to
: learn a bit more....and you now have the perfect opportunity. :-)

That exact same thing happens to me. I don't know why, either. I might
just put an insmod command in the startup script, but there should be a
better way.
Or at least, that did happen to me before I upgraded to 2.4 and the stupid
driver stopped working. I get "unresolved symbol: tasklet_hi_vec,
bh_task_vec, __vmalloc, and irq_stat." depmod -a doesn't solve it. I
wonder
what I'm missing.

Subject: filesystem corruption
Date: Tue, 09 Jan 2001 14:59:16 -0800
Here's what happened:
I use hda as my windog disk (still need the other os for school :( )
and the system boots from hda normally (I use a floppy to boot hdc). I
thought it would be a good idea to make a partition on hdc as a
destination for windog backups (see hdc9, below).
A few days ago I booted Linux, and found that the /usr filesystem had
been corrupted (LOTS of bad inodes). It took me a little while to
recall that I had moved a directory full of files over to $backup in the
windog session prior to my return to Linux, and when I did, I
immediately blamed the often brutish behaviour of windog when it comes
to disk sharing. It seems to me that the last time I backed up to this
partition I had a similar problem, but it was during my initial
installation of Linux (Debian potato), and I put it down to user error.
Is this a gotcha I should be aware of (and defend against), or should I
be looking elsewhere for the problem?
Here's the listing for hdc on my machine:
Name Flags Part Type FS Type [Label] Size (MB)
---------------------------------------------------------------------
hdc1 Boot Primary Linux ext2 boot 9.81
hdc2 Primary Linux ext2 root 1999.88
hdc3 Primary Linux ext2 usr 1999.88
hdc5 Logical Linux swap 128.00
hdc6 Logical Linux swap 128.00
hdc7 Logical Linux ext2 home 1999.88
hdc8 Logical Linux ext2 var 255.99
hdc9 Logical Win95 FAT32 $backup 3000.07
Logical Free Space 10498.95
Thanks in advance for any insight or tales of similar experiences. G.
