have you tried to exit using the "normal" exit way ?

In your /etc/inittab file should be a line like

id:5:initdefault:

change the '5' in '3'.

Hmm... didn't know that 3Com has made linux drivers for their

All the Xs Window Managers have a sort of "get me out of here"
command, usually "Quit" or "Exit" followed by a "logout" command,
this will shut down the server gracefully, without the need to kill
the server with Ctrl/Alt/Bkspc.

Subject: KPPP connecting, hosts not found
Date: Wed, 16 Aug 2000 08:55:27 GMT

Hello, this is probably a common problem. I recently moved to Germany
where I have to use a dial-up connection. I used to have Roadrunner
cable in the U.S. Anyway I disabled my ethernet card (eth0) from
initializing at startup anymore. Sorry, I forget the exact name of the
tool that I used; "nettool" or something like that. Anyway, I set KPPP
to do its thing. It dials, connects, and looks good, but doesn't seem
to be sending/receiving any more bytes after the connection is made.
Netscape, GAIM, etc. cannot locate host servers.

I read the Modem How-To and don't see anything. I did do "modemtool"
and set the correct COM port (COM1).

I have an external Elsa Microlink 56K (German specifications) modem.
The manufacturer assures me that it works with Linux, although they do
not technically support Linux.

I use Sonnet.de for my ISP here in Germany. I also try Compuserve now
and then (here in Germany Compuserve works more like a standard ISP;
they don't have that cheeseball software interface and you can just
dial it straight with KPPP or in Windows, Dial-Up Networking).

If someone can point me in the right direction for what else I need to
read, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks,
Karen

Many programs you compile from source will include a "make
uninstall" target. If they don't, you'll just have to track down
the files by hand.

Two ways:

1) Try "make bzdisk"
2) Just copy the kernel image to the floppy.

this seems more a nt issue,
usually when your machine and the server are in different subnets,
you need either a wins-server,
or create a lmhosts-file (from lmhosts.sam)

if your linux box is *not* the domain-pdc, it takes no change on
linux-side.

Subject: running a GUI on a linux SERVER ?
Date: Wed, 16 Aug 2000 09:43:39 GMT

hello !

Now some or even most of you may know that both KDE and GNOME are
installable/loadable with a workstation install of redhat 6.2.

I'm curious though ... can you not run any type of GUI or xwindows if
you choose to install the server option ?

That's what the documentation certanly points to i.e. that the server
option goes to a default /stable /install path, with predetermined
partition names/sizes, etc. and certainly no windows loaded at boot-
up.

... Can you set up a GUI on your server at a later stage maybe ? If so,
which would GUI or xwindows flavour would it be ?

I suppose I want the best of all worlds for my redhat install .. to be
able to slap apache on top of it, but also play around in a GUI
environment and look at the published pages thru a browser on the same
machine.

Has anyone done this at all ?

many thanks !

Andrei

Subject: Takes many attempts to boot - ?rdev problem?
Date: Wed, 16 Aug 2000 10:35:50 +0100

I have Suse 6.3 running with Win95. I'm having trouble getting Linux to boot
whether via lilo or via a copy of the kernel on floppy. In both cases, the
boot sequence either just repeats itself (ie back to BIOS self-check) or
hangs at "Loading linux...". After trying several times, eventually Linux
boots properly.

Any ideas what could cause this variable behaviour and what I can do about
it? The kernel image must be OK in itself as it does boot eventually. The
fact that I get the same behaviour whether booting from a floppy or via lilo
indicates that the problem isn't with lilo configuration. My guess is that
there's something wrong with one of the kernel parameters you can adjust
with rdev. But I'm not very sure about this area. What size/offset should
this have for the ramdisk? (currently 0)

Any suggestions welcome.

I'm running Debian 2.2.15 and have a soundblaster-live card.
I've installed the opensource-drivers from creative.
I can play music with my xmms and I can play systemsounds with KDE.

What is the problem ?
1. The sound is about -10dB and the fader from the mixer don't work (also
don't work on the xmms) ?
2. I have only 1 channel and the soundblaster-live has more audio-channels
(I think 4) ?
I have tried to install several mixers but they all give the same problem.

Can somebody give me a hint how to solve this ?

I'm using SuSE with my Soundblaster Live and ALSA (Advanced Linux Sound

think you'll be better of trying ALSA instead, as Creative:s drivers still

Does anybody know how I can prevent this from happening? I

Hello,

I've been running RH6.1 for some time now, and was wondering if a good
reference exists on the Linux boot process.

What I'm looking for is which files are loaded and what order in which
they are loaded.

I know that much of the action is in the /etc/rc.d and in the
/etc/rc.d/init.d directories, but haven't been able to make complete
sense out of it all.

For example, when I boot my machine, there is a process that is
"detecting new hardware" that I would like to comment out since it
takes a while to finish. I'm sure it is a script running kudzu or
something, and I'll bet the script is somewhere in the /etc/rc.d tree,
or called by a process in that tree, but I just can't seem to find it.
Could somebody give me a pointer?

Thanks,
Greg

Subject: printtool/Samba problem

I've got Samba running on a small network consisting of a couple of
boxes running Win98 and a couple more running Linux (MDK7.1). Things
like file sharing work fine and all the machines can see each other.
However, I'm having problems printing to a printer connected to one of
the Windows boxes. I can print text files by using smbclient to connect
to the windows printer - so the Linux machine can access the printer OK
- but if I set up the printer using printtool as a SMB/Windows 95/NT
printer and try and print a test page, nothing happens. Two files,
called status and lock, appear in /var/spool/lpd/lpwin/ (lpwin is the
name of my printer), but nothing gets
added to the Windows print queue, so the Linux machine isn't sending the
job to the Windows machine correctly.

Now, it seems that this must be a problem with printtool, as smbclient
works OK. However, printtool asks for a fairly minimal amount of
information, all of which seems to be entered correctly. Any suggestions
as to what might be going wrong, or where to look to get some - any -
information about what happens to the printer job? FWIW, the Samba debug
level is set to 5 in smb.conf, but AFAICT this isn't producing anything
in /var/log/samba that helps

Thanks,

Ben.
