I would take a wild (but educated) guess that it might be the memory on
the video card.

Hi to all

When kppp has succeeded a login (when I am online), I cannot use disk navigator
or open for example Netscape. Also, the ''Mandrake update" option is not
working. But everything works ok if I am offline.

Same for the browser: I have to open Netscape before going online.

Is it normal?

Thank you

I have had the same problem with a Red Hat Linux 6.2. And it still occurs,
but I have a work-arround:

I have insert a "/sbin/kbdrate -d 250 -r 30" in the file
"/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc" and use startx from the console.

When I use xdm or so, the keyboard hangs.

(Ask me not, how I find it out. I have spend much time)

Can somebody help? I can use the full system, but I must start X manually.

The problem was diagnosed by support to be a hardware failure. The
retailer replaced the card without any hassle. I just hope it does
not develop the same problem... ;)

It's strange, I have a Kingston etherx client card, kne30bt. It shows a throughput of
70-90 KB/s on Windows, on our LAN.

However, on the same machine I run linux also, but the same card's performance is 0-1
KB/s range, and rarely 5-7 KB/s. I tried several times using the same conditions.

I wonder what is causing this problem. This is my 'lsmod' result.

ne2k-pci 3812 1 (autoclean)
    8390 5920 0 (autoclean) [ne2k-pci]

It got automatically detected and installed. I was not asked a question. The chipset
is RTL8029AS.

Could anyone give me some advice? I would appreciate it.

I have just installed Redhat 6.0 on a pentium box and have a small, yet
annoying problem. When I startx there is an apostrophe ( ' ) inserted
wherever my cursor is placed. The insertion is at a regular time interval,
as if there is a sense byte being sent that corresponds to that character.
I am not sure if it is the configuration of my mouse (a microsoft
intellimouse w/ wheel in middle) or my keyboard (microsoft natural). In the
XFree86Config file I have changed the protocol to "PS2" instead of the
original "IMPS2" and changed the gpm:

gpm -t ps2 -m /dev/psaux

Can anyone help?

Hello, I'm about to install Mandrake 7.0 + Chinese Language Extensions 0.9
I will unplug my windows 15GB drive during installation so as not to have any
accidents [IDE primary]
I will put Mandrake on IDE secondary 26GB drive and intend to boot each time into
either via a BIOS choice. Perhaps someone might
elaborate on what choices to make during this process.
Shall I devote a partition for a later different Linux distribution that I might want
to try on the side... or
can I do that any time and not regret having done it now?
I did http://www.unicore.com/bioswiz/ and it said Program: Unicore BIOS Wizard
Version 1.5
Program: Unicore Chip Detect v0.72 2000.03.10
BIOS Date: 01/22/98
BIOS Type: Award Modular BIOS v4.51PG
BIOS ID: 01/22/98-SiS-5598-<SP97_V>C-00
BIOS Eval: #401A0-0106v
Chipset: SiS 5597 rev 2
Superio: Winbond 877F (use 87h) rev 0 found at port 3F0h
I suppose this means that my 26GB drive wont be a problem?... as it already can deal
with 15GB Windows drive. If I have to update
BIOS, can I do it online without paying money?
I suppose my unplugging strategy will ensure nothing gets damaged on the windows
drive... I expect I will be able to read windows
files later via a "mount" command in Linux... how about reading Linux files from
windows? Or will it all depend on how I do this
installation?
I'm Pentium 166 mhz, somebody said don't install X windows but I want to have a
standard Linux world.

Yes, if you go to a wrapped line and cursor right, then it redraws the
right 3/4s plus of the screen all the lines are single spaced.

Subject: 2 questions - on Gnome and LILO
Date: Fri, 18 Aug 2000 18:40:51 -0500

I find myself with 2 problems

First, I installed RedHat 6.2 on a Gateway laptop using the SIM chipset,
and it could not install XWindows. I got XFree86 installed and running,
but issuing the gnome-session command gives somewhat bizarre results. I
get a small outline of sections, and by repeatedly left-clicking I can
get parts of Gnome to show up, but never the entire thing. Tried
deleting the .gnome files - did not help. Any suggestions would be
appreciated.

Second, on a different system, I have Win98 on the primary disk and
Linux on the secondary. When I installed it, I did not install LILO.
Now I find I would like to set up the LILO boot (my boot floppy is
apparently going bad), but simply entering LILO sets it up on the
secondary hard drive, not the primary, so I still only boot into
Windows. How do I get LILO to install on the first hard drive master
boot record?

Thanks for any help.

After installing Redhat 6.2 I downloaded the various security patches
including the latest kernel. I followed the instructions for kernel upgrades
from the Redhat web site, but when attempting to run mkinitrd to create the
boot RAM disk image, I get the following error: "All of your loopback devices
are in use!" Coming from the BSD side of the world, I am not familiar with
the loopback block device concept. Fstab does't have any lines referring to a
/dev/loop*. Mount only shows my SCSI partitions and two "none" mounts. An
"lsof |grep loop", comes back empty. How do I determine what process(es) are
using the loopback devices, or is there some other simple means of creating
the RAM disk?

Hi! What version of Samba are you running? If not 2.0.7, first upgrade
to 2.0.7 and see what happens.

With 2.0.7, the "smbmount" is no longer used. "mount" is used with the
"smbfs" filesystem type.

Hi! I've used printtool to configure a SMB printer which is hosted on
our WIndows NT 4.0 domain server. I can print from RedHat Linux 6.0
using Netscape to the HP LaserJet 6p (PCL) just fine. I think printtool
sets up "ghostscript" as the filter to convert from PostScript to PCL.

I believe printtool is requiring a print queue because lpd gets print
jobs from a given queue and then prints them. You can read the man
pages on lpd (i.e. man lpd) to learn more about print queues and
/etc/printcap and stuff.

Good luck!

Peace.....

Apparently, from other questions/discussions in this group it, or
something very similar is quite common. I have the same problem you
describe here, but perhaps to even a greater extent. Once I have made
a connection with Kppp I can't even open a consol window. I have
downloaded and installed Mozilla and couldn't get it to start while
Kppp was online, but couldn't get it to find the connection if I
started Mozilla first then Kppp. I did find that if I logged in as su
then exited su mozilla and other apps could be started after
connecting with Kppp.

sure would be nice if someone with more Linux knowledge than me could
help us all out here with this Kppp thing. I'll keep watching these
Kppp threads and provide a solution if I stumble across one.
