Is there an MP3 encoded that's compilable for Linux on Alphas ?
Good audio quality if my highest priority, then file size, then run
time, though being able to use both CPUs in a twin processor system
would be an advantage.
Do any of them do VBR encoding, and is this as good as it's cracked up
to be ?

Are you sure?
You need to have root permissions to execute it.
So either login as root or type "su"

The /boot partition is a way of ensuring that the kernel is below cylinder
1024 (as long as there is space below cylinder 1024).
What's the purpose of the machine? A news server will have much different
disk usage patterns than a web server.
Some relevant HOWTOS:
http://linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/mini/Partition.html
http://linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Multi-Disk-HOWTO.html
Red Hat's partitioning scheme from
http://www.redhat.com/support/manuals/RHL-6.2-Manual/install-guide/
The Workstation-Class Installation
* A 64MB swap partition.
* A variable-sized (the exact size is dependent on your available disk
space) root partition (mounted as /) in which all other files are
stored.
* A 16MB partition (mounted as /boot) in which the Linux kernel and
related files reside.
You will need at least 850MB of free disk space in order to perform
a workstation-class installation.
The Server-Class Installation
* A 64MB swap partition.
* A 256MB partition (mounted as /).
* A partition of at least 512MB (mounted as /usr).
* A partition of at least 512MB (mounted as /home).
* A 256MB partition (mounted as /var).
* A 16MB partition (mounted as /boot) in which the Linux kernel and
related files are kept.
You will need at least 1.7GB of free disk space in order to perform
a server-class installation.

I use Grip. To use both CPUs the program would have to be written to do so,
don't know if any are or not. As for VBR I don't think there are any available

I had sbpcd driver as module on RH 6.1 to support my old Teac 55A cdrom
on Panasonic interface on sb16 and it worked fine - irq 7,io=230.
Then i recompiled kernel to to support sbpcd internally and changed irq
to 5 (on sb card) - now i can not mount my cd - system hangs when i 'm
trying to mount it and then reboot in 20-30 seconds. Under windows it
works fine.
Plz - any suggestion about system parameters to change/add to back my cd

I'm finally getting sick of typing in the root password to access KPPP. I
know that the file is in /usr/sbin, but the kdelink file accesses the
symbolic link in /usr/bin instead. Oh yeah, this is the version of KDE
that comes with RedHat 6.1. Anyway, I want to make it so that when I click
on the KPPP icon, I get KPPP without having to type in the root password.
Can I just add the SUID bit to the file in /usr/sbin and run it direct?

I had a chance to work on it some more last night and was able
to get a cheap ESS Solo 1 pci sound card to work with the
4Front drivers. Cost me $15.00 as I already had the main
program. I bought the driver 2 years ago a never used it. I like
the way they allow one to upgrade as the kernels' advance.
I was also able to get a PCI Actiontec modem working. This is
one of the few "hardware" PCI modems that will work with Linux.
The only issue I have to settle now is migration of the drives
and files from the older PR440FX. Some of the drives can be
installed "in toto" as they are storage for code. Some code
I will have to plug into the network and lift the files into
new drives.
I wonder if there are any new benchmarking programs besides
lmbench?

Hello,
Saw your post and I have Grip, I believe it is 2.5, running on
a dual PPro PR440FX motherboard, There is an option in Grip
to set the number of cpu's for usage. I've done some ripping
under KDE and the Ktop utility does show that both cpu's
are being utilized. This was using two Pentium Pro 333Mhz
Overdrives with 512Mb of ECC 60ns buffered DIMMS.
I set the program up and ripped 9 audio cd's to MP3 and then burned
the data to a single cd just for fun. I'm afraid I haven't
done much with it since then. I don't download MP3's as
I have a poor connection (read 56k modem)
One interesting finding is if I am playing the above MP3 cd
in the PR440FX and I have selected all of the songs on the disk.
The cpu usage goes way up on both cpu's for a few minutes through
the first song and then drops to single digits.
I might try to see what happens as I have just acquired an
ex-Gateway (2000) ALR Revolution Quad 6 server. The computer
was one of their in-house units and sold to me by a liquidator
www.oemliquidators.com. I have just got it going with four
Pentium Pro Overdrives. In-hell said that the Overdrive was
only good for dual SMP. I wonder if that is only with WinBlows
stuff. Ktop shows a distribution of usage over the four cpu's
during a kernel compile. I expect that to mean they are being
utilized?
Best regards,
Kurt Savegnago

Thank you and Wayne Pilgrim for the messages. Yes, you did shed some
light on the problem! I looked up the web page that you refers to, and
then some more that are referred to by that web page.
So far, I tried to
(1) do what Wayne Pilgrim has suggested: i.e. specifying PCI=BIOS option
at the bootup
(2) specify ide2=addr1,addr2 ide3=addr3,addr4 boot options that are
explained in the web page that you refer to in your message
(3) pull out the Ultra 100 IDE Controller PCI card from the computer,
and connect hard drives to the motherboard, and then boot up with the
linux installation CD, as suggested by the UDMA FAQ web page
None of these let me go farther than the dead-end after the same message:
PCI: PCI BIOS Revision 2.10 entry at 0xfdb91
PCI: Using configuration type 1
PCI: Probing PCI hardware
Does this mean that something else is not compatible with the linux
kernel in the distribution CD? For example, the motherboard?
I found out that my motherboard is
400474 Intel RAMBUS Motherboard with integrated LAN and audio
I wonder if the "RAMBUS" part is the culprit, since I remember reading
on the RedHat web page that Motherboard with a DRAM controller is not
supported.
