hello,
assume we have linux running on a server and we are connecting to it using a
terminal
emulator from a windows client to run programs, assume again that our
windows pc
is old and very flaky (freezes a lot etc. bad ram etc.) how will this affect
the data on the linux box since we are running a time sharing system and all
we are doing is connecting to the box and sending screen and keyboard
emulations, while the actual processes are being run on the linux server.

thank you,
kenny.

ps. sorry for double posting this topic.

The data open in programs in the terminal emulator will of course be
killed and changes will be lost.

If you e.g. start vi, pico, emacs or another editor, open a file, edit
something and it crashes, all changes will be lost. Nothing else on the
linux box will be affected. The open file will be intact (anyway in most
cases.

If it crashes exactly while saving the file, you could be in al lot of
trouble losin all the file; but I never seen that myself (and I'm in a
likewise situation). That should however be taken care of with normal
backup techniques.

So I will say go on and use it for terminal operation.

Has anyone else seen a problem with gnumeric. I'm using
0.56 version installed via rpm from helix code. Been using
it for several months now but today it refuses to start, no
error message was given.

I removed the rpm then reinstalled it. The very first time i
tried gnumeric something like the following appeared on
console:

GnomeUI Warning could not establish session handle

And gnumeric didn't start. Subsequently trying to start gnumeric
gives no errors or warnings at all.

I have no idea what could be causing this. Any help
you could render would be most appreciated.

Thanks

You need to use smb-client. I use a program called linneighborhood (it is a
front end for smb-client) and it works very well.

First question.... I would like to know where to start reading for help on
how to set up a dial up server. It will run Red Hat 7.0, 3com inet
connection, US Robotics external modem.

Another question.... I have had success in getting a Compaq 233 MHz laptop
working with the linmodem and just installed RH on a Gateway 600Mhz. Both
machines run windoz and RH 7.0. The problem is with the Gateway and my 7 gig
partition being past 1024th cylinder. Has LILO been reworked to get past
this?

My challenge is to use the machine at work for a dial up server from home to
access the net.

If your sound card is not generic one, try ALSA. You can find it in Linux's
mini-howto:  ALSA-Howto.

Does anyone recognise this problem? I get similar looking problems when I
reference other classes from the STL.
I dont think I've done anything to break the standard setup you get after
installing RedHat 7.0.
It looks like a configuration thing, but I have no idea what to do to fix
it!

This compiles fine, though:

#include <stdio.h>

int main()
{

    return 0;
}

Please use ssh services instead of telnet: www.openssh.com. RH70 has
ssh stuff on it. Telnet passes everything in plain text, making
username/password sniffing easy. SSH will encrypt the entire session.

Ok, just to make sure I understand: how does this ensure that the

My screen stops scrolling after I hit the "Func->Font" key (it's a
laptop)
until I reenter X. I guess I can live with that, but if anyone has any
clue
why this would be doing this and/or how to fix it, help would be
appreciated.

If this does not help, try deleting (hey man what am I saying - move it
to some backup place) ~/.kde/share/config/kcontrolrc.

Well sure you can ......
You just download the tarball and copy it on the 250zip and then you can
normally use it on your RH system :-)

gnumeric 0.58 is available though it may not fix the problem.

If you have linux already isntalled, why not just access the fat16/32
partition from linux and move it to the linux partition?

There's little reason to involve the zip disk, IMO.

mount -t vfat /dev/hdxn /mnt/winme

mv /mnt/winme/path/linux-2.4.0 /usr/src/.
